For the last twenty-four years Laundromat has created some of the best winter wear
available. Why is it the best?

- Our sweaters are ethical because we are members of the Fair Trade Federation.
- They are sustainable because they are made of 100% wool.
- They are comfortable because they are fleece lined.

We’re proud of our Canadian designs and Nepali handiwork, but what is truly unique about
our sweaters and accessories are the people who choose to wear them. People like Liza Bodt
and Alexandre Zindy, nature photographers who spent a year living out of a van in search of
that perfect picture. Or people like Megan Hanacek who survived seventy-eight days alone
in the Patagonia wilderness, thanks in part to her Laundromat sweater.

I feel very privileged to think that our handmade sweaters have played a small part in these
amazing stories and hope they inspire you to create amazing stories of your own.

In 2016, Parisian photographers Liza Bodt and Alexandre Zindy embarked on a one

year journey across Western North America in search of the perfect destination to combine
their passion for photography, hiking and wildlife.

‘Our road-trip started in Edmonton Canada, where we bought a thirty-year
old campervan. We had planned our itinerary according to general weather
and seasons: go south all the way to Mexico with winter approaching, and

then go back up to Canada in the springtime. Little did we know that when
travelling from the coast to the mountains the weather can change so
drastically in a matter of a few hours! We ended up using our Laundromat

sweaters and other accessories much sooner and for longer than originally
planned: almost everyday from October until May!

As nature photographers, it is important to feel
comfortable and warm in order to stay focused and
open to what is around us. Landscape photography
often happens at dawn and dusk, when the light is
the most beautiful, but that’s also when it is the
coldest. For wildlife photography, we often needed to
stay motionless for long time periods of time...
wool was the perfect fiber for us out there.’
On their journey, Alexandre stayed warm in our Oxford Men’s Sweater in bark, while Liza wore a Women’s Laila

Megan

Last year, Canadian professional forester and biologist Megan Hanacek, participated in the
third season of History Channel’s hit reality TV show ‘Alone’. The show featured ten
participants taking ten survival items to Patagonia, the South American region known as the
‘Edge of the World.’ And yes, true story, in her backpack,
Megan brought with her a Laundromat sweater.

Over the course of an incredible seventy-eight days in the wilderness,
Megan created her own shelters, foraged food from the land and overcame
harsh weather conditions like the bitter cold. She even used threads and
fur from the pom-pom of her Yoko Laundromat sweater to make some of
her fishing lures.

Megan became the longest surviving Canadian (and mother) cast
member to be featured on Alone.
She had this to say about the experience:

“I’ve had a lot of kids say they were inspired by watching me on
Alone. My biggest concern with society today is the growing divide
between people
and the outdoors. The average amount
of screen time by the average North
American is six hours a day, and the
stats show that people check their
phones every four minutes. I worry
that our youth may not have the
opportunities to see the value in
ensuring healthy ecosystems and
wildlife.”

‘’I am really appreciative that in the middle of my life I was allowed to have this
amount of time by myself to do a bit of life reflection. It’s an immensely powerful thing to
be alone and be in solitude... Nature has immense power to it, and when you’re fully
immersed in it for a significant amount of time, you really get an appreciation for every
minute of every day and how fragile life is. You have to live positively and if you have
the right mindset, it is amazing what can be accomplished.’’

When Megan came home, Laundromat offered her a
replacement sweater but she turned us down arguing
that her favorite sweater was still in perfect condition...

So we sent new sweaters for the entire family instead!

On Earth Day 2016, we planted a tree in Nepal for each of our loyal customers with the
help of GreenUpNepal.org. Through our Plant-a-Seed initiative, Laundromat continues
planting trees every year to help reduce its carbon footprint.

basics of fair wages and safe working conditions. It is a 36o° approach that is about true partnership
with artisans and creating positive change through all our work.
In Kathmandu, this translates into:
- Replacing diesel-powered generators by solar panels to improve air quality.
- Providing schooling for community kids in need, from kindergarten to graduation.
- Ensuring equal opportunity and equal wages for women.
- Training and improving the skill sets of our artisans ensures better quality craftsmanship.
This results in increased sales and production, thus ensuring a viable and sustainable
business model. A win – win situation for everyone involved!
