Objective: Describe how objects in the solar system are in regular and predictable motions that explain such phenomena
as days, years, seasons, eclipses, tides and moon cycles.
Time: 40 minutes

Materials:
For each student:
Markers or colored pencils
Moon Phases Flipbook handouts
For the teacher:
Overhead copy of Moon Phase Flipbook for teacher (either the teacher key or a blank student copy)

Procedure:

1. Engage Activity: Ask students, “What did the moon look like last night?” Ask students “Why does the moon
look different throughout the month?” Discuss with the students why there are phases of the moon. There are
phases of the moon as a result of the moon revolving around the earth and the light from the sun always hitting
half of the moon. From a person’s position on the earth, the half of the moon that is lit cannot always be seen.
The phase of the moon depends on the position of the sun, earth and moon.

2. Give each student a copy of the Moon Phases Flip Book.
3. With your class, fill in the half of the moon that is not lit by the sun on each flipbook page. (Tell students that half

of the moon is always lit up. We just can’t always see it from the Earth. Use a ball and a globe to demonstrate.
Discuss why we only see parts of the half of the lit moon because of our perspective from the Earth.)
4. Have students use fill in and label the phases of the moon on each flipbook page.
5. Have students color the sun and the earth.
6. Have students cut out, assemble and staple flipbook together.
