Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist who used her “Freedom of Speech” to help her achieve her goal of letting kids get the chance to attend “all white-schools”, as well as making it a federal law. Meet Daisy Bates ! 2


Her dream to become a civil rights activist happened long ago when she was just three years old. It happened because three white men had murdered her mother making an emotional dent in her heart, inspiring her to become a civil rights activist. 3 The Dent


When she was 15 years old she found the love of her life as well as becoming the first African American to start a newspaper solely focusing on the Civil Rights Movement. A few years later they settled into their new home in Little Rock, Arkansas. 15 Adolescent Years 4


In 1954 the Supreme court claimed Segregation unconstitutional. Letting colored people attend the same schools as white people, but still white people were not happy about this decision because they did not want colored people to start attending the same school as their children/themselves. This is why the Little Rock Nine was established. The Start To Something New 5


When the Little Rock nine was established Daisy Bates was truly determined to get colored people to attend schools without being discriminated against for their race. No matter the cost, whether that meant getting many threats, or losing something very important to her, she still persevered through it. BL M True Determination 6


All the work that she had worked for in the schools was finally getting some recognition. Daisy Bates won many awards and she even wrote a memoir in 1962. The Little Rock Nine 9 7


After the great success of Little Rock Nine she worked to improve the status of African Americans in the South. But she never went unnoticed because of her great dedication to her work. Stick To The Status Quo 8


All the work that she had worked for in the schools was finally getting some recognition. Daisy Bates won many awards and she even wrote a memoir in 1962. Nothing Went Unnoticed 19 62 9


Daisy Bates won many awards as well as publishing memoirs. Her memoir was called “The Long Shadow of Little Rock” Soon later her book won an American Book Award. Mrs. Bates was also invited to sit on stage during the program in March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, she was even invited to speak during the march due to some last minute changes. The last great thing Ms. Bates did before her tragic death was help a black town who lacked economic resources and was impoverished with her great organization skills to improve their community. Mrs. Daisy Bates died on November 4th, 1999 due to a Heart attack, she died at age 84. We remember and acknowledge her on the third Monday in February (the 20th) where we celebrate Daisy Gatson Bates Day for all her contributions to our great country.
