1 First Generation 1. (BRANCH 3) Johann STROBEL was born. This family tree is primarily from the perspective of our own family (branch 1), descended from Martin Strobel b. 1757, Baden (and Adam Eberle b. 1804, Trier on the maternal side). However, two additional "Strobels of Southern Indiana" families have been included here. All three came to settle on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, two in the same year and one three years later, all from within a five mile area in Germany and evidently knew each other in Indiana. He was baptized on 15 Nov 1797 in Sankt Josef-Katholisch, Gaggenau, Baden. He immigrated on 28 Sep 1846 to New York on SS Oneida from Harve, France. He lived on123 acres in northeastern Floyd and 40 in northern Clark Counties on 3 Nov 1846. He died on 15 Nov 1886 in St. Joe community, Clark County, Indiana. Philip's family is one of the other two families of Strobels of Southern Indiana shown in this tree. They were a part of a large group of immigrants from that area in Baden to move to this particular place in Indiana. Philip and Heinika were 49 and 41 years of age respectively and were accompanied by their sons, Jacob (age 15) and Leopold (age 10) as well as possibly other additional children. The Strobels bought land in Floyd County, Indiana near the present day community of St. Joseph, where they apparently made a living as farmers. By 1853, enough German-speaking Catholic immigrants had settled in this area to warrant a church. "St. Joseph's on the Hill" was founded less than one-half mile from the Strobel property. The first Pastor was Father Louis Neyron, who later went to South Bend, Indiana, and was one of the founders of Notre Dame University. One of the earliest events of this church was the marriage of Philip's son Leopold, to Geneviva Zipf, on June 15, 1858. Over the years, Philip sold off his land to his sons and grandsons. In 1874, Heinrika died, and by 1880 Philip had moved in with his son Jacob. Philip lived there until his death on Nov.15, 1886, his eighty ninth birthday. Augustine J. Leopold's primary occupation was farming, but he also made income as a woodworker when farming was slow, such as in the winter. The timber on his land was perfect for many things such as whipstocks,
5 hoe handles, and broomsticks, so he sold these by the dozen. In 1857, at the age of 22, Leopold married Geneviva Zipf, the 17 year old daughter of one of the other immigrant families. They subsequently had five children: Jacob (1859), Helen (1861), Joseph (1863), Mary (1864), and Frances (1867). The oldest daughter, Helen, died during a Cholera epidemic in 1862 at a year old. Joseph became a monk at Subiaco, Arkansas (Brother Maurus) and, of course, Mary would eventually become the spouse of Teacher Duerr. Geneviva died eight days after the birth of Frances from complications of childbirth (1867). Leopold Strobel and Catherine Mangin Six weeks after the death of Geneviva, Leopold remarried to Catherine Mangin, who had recently come from France with her one year old son. They eventually had seven additional children, four of whom would survive their childhood. According to family tradition, Catherine did not fit in well with the other women in the community, and consequently, by 1880 Leopold was making preparations to move away from St. Joseph's. A deed was recorded in that year selling his land. An interesting provision of the deed was a stipulation that his father, Philip, would have the rights and ownership of one room, until the time of his death. In 1881, Leopold packed up his belongings and headed for Arkansas with his family (including Mary Strobel, the eventual Mrs. Duerr). The family traveled most of the way by steamboat, down the Ohio to the Mississippi and then up the Arkansas River. The Strobels settled several miles north of Subiaco, where he lived within the confines of St. Benedict's Parish. Like his father before him, Leopold became one of the leaders of his parish. His farm was on the road from Paris to Patterson's Bluff, where a ferry connected the settlers to the railroad at Hartman. Many wayfarers made his home a stop for rest and a bite to eat. One merchant who frequently stopped by was Theodore Burgert. Theodore made the acquaintance of Leopold's daughter Mary, and eventually became her first husband. In 1903, Leopold retired to Subiaco and lived a short distance from the Abbey. Catherine died in 1918 at the age of 80, and Leopold died in 1924 at the age of 88. Augustine J. In 1880, at the age of sixteen, Mary moved to Arkansas with her father, step-mother, and at least seven brothers and sisters. The Strobels settled in the Subiaco area in the early days of the monastery. Mary Strobel married Theodore Burgert in 1884 and subsequently had two sons, Joe and Leopold. Joe Burgert would eventually become a Catholic priest and Abbot of Subiaco Abbey (Abbot Edward). Leopold Burgert lived in the Altus area for a time, and eventually ended up in the Canute, Oklahoma, area. (Incidentally, Mary Strobel's oldest brother, Jake, ended up in Canute also, as well as her son, Ted.) In January 1887, Mary's husband, Theodore, died of pneumonia. Later that year she was married to Joseph Duerr. Joseph and Mary Duerr lived in Morrison Bluff for the first ten years, and their five children were born during this time. In 1898, they moved their family to Altus, Arkansas, where Joseph was the school teacher at St. Mary's. In 1926, Mary's son, Joe Burgert, became Abbot Edward of Subiaco Abbey. Mary traveled to attend the ordination, but on the trip home to Altus a snowstorm hit. Mary caught pneumonia, and died a week later at her home in Altus on February 7, 1926. February 7th was a Sunday, and her husband played the organ at mass that morning. Mary died a few hours later with her husband and her son (Abbot Edward) at her side.
