History of the Music Ministry

Music has been an integral part of the worship experience at Colossian Baptist Church since
its inception. Although no accurate written history exists, the verbal account of the old saints
illustrates how God blessed the church and anointed the Music Ministry to grow into a
powerful instrument of praise and worship; that touches the hearts of so many who enter the
doors of Colossian.
The Music Ministry has evolved over the years from church members lifting their voices to
God and making a joyful noise even without musical instruments; members still formed
various groups to lift their voices in praise.
The First Senior Choir, was not officially organized until around 1935. The Second Senior
Choir, at Colossian, was organized in 1964. However, 11 years later, in 1975, a Youth Choir
was formed and ten years later the Irvin D. Melvin Gospel Choir (IDM) was organized. These
spirit-filled groups contributed greatly to the spiritual growth of Colossian Baptist Church.
In addition, these choirs spread God’s message of love and encouragement as they traveled to
other churches, gospel festivals, and programs throughout the region.
In 2017 the music ministry consists of four active choirs; Sanctuary Choir, Male Chorus,
Youth/Young Adult Choir and the Mass Choir.
