Qatar Construction Specification (QCS) – 2014 Released

Every construction in Qatar is undertaken as per the QCS guidelines and
parameters approved by the Ministry of Environment, Qatar. QCS 2014
provides a legal reference authority to preserve the rights of all parties such
as the project owners, contractors and consultants through clear
legislation. It also establishes regulations for ensuring the safety of workers,
adopts specifications for abnormal exposure conditions such as fires,
earthquakes and storms, and gives importance to the local and global green
building codes.
With the ever changing construction technology and design methods, QCS
undergoes periodic updates and major release happens once in every four
years. The previous QCS version 2010 was superseded by the latest release
in 2014. Referencing a range of international standards and based on the
interaction with more than 120 industry experts, QCS 2014 was updated.
QDC is privileged to have been associated with the QCS by having our
representatives Mukherjee, Gireesh Babu, Mohanasundaram,
Srinivasan and Shyam Sundar in the National Technical Concrete
Industry subcommittee (NT‐CIS) which spearheaded the current revision
of QCS 2014.
QDC played a pivotal role in the NT‐CIS, defining the criteria’s pertaining
to seismic loading and revived wind loads. Gireesh Babu was the lead for
the group which improvises the foundation specifications for various
foundation systems while Mukherjee was the lead for the group dealing
with the building permits and approvals in Qatar. QDC’s contribution to
the fifth edition of QCS was recognized during the official launch of QCS.

This huge Commercial and Residential Complex is proposed to be constructed opposite to the existing Barwa Village, in Wakrah.
This complex consists of 36 buildings with Commercial spaces on the Ground and Mezzanine floors, 33 of which have Residential flats, and
3 of which have Office spaces on the top 2 floors. The complex also consists of a Hypermarket (which has Supermarkets & 2no. Cinemas),
Motel (with approximately 118 rooms and a 3‐star rating), Restaurant (with and indoor and outdoor seating arrangement by a Pool),
Clubhouse (which has multipurpose halls and play areas) and Mosque (which can accommodate as many as 1000 persons for a Friday
Service) and gardens, kids play areas and designated Football and Basketball courts and other ancillary/utility buildings.

The project involves design of a retractable roofing system for the existing Amphitheatre in Katara.
TERRELL from France was the specialist design consultant and designed the Chinese lace fan shaped retractable roof. QDC in coordination
with TERRELL has developed the details for the complete roof structure.
The project is very unique as it involves an innovative technique of sliding folding tresses. The project was challenging since it required to
create the roof to cover the existing 100m diameter stage and seating area without any intermediate columns, and without any permanent
beams.
Light weight material was used for the retractable roof –Aluminum frame with Polycarbonate, supported on steel trusses. Each truss is 42
m long, 3.5 m high when opened and 5m high when closed. A retractable sliding parapet wall of light weight stone cladding was proposed
to hide the trusses when viewed from outside.

Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) ‐ Engineering Products Department (EPD) intends to develop the existing Omar Bin Al Khatab
primary school for the purpose to accommodate the Woman’s Sports Committee Staff. The project envisages the development
of existing primary school to Woman’s Sports Academy to make it a suitable venue for the Academy of Woman Sport
Development.

The proposed roof covering over the bleachers is designed in the shape of a Football. The overall geometry makes use of Pentagonal and
Hexagonal patterns. Façade Colors are proposed as per the existing Al Gharafa Club Colors (Blue & Yellow). Aluminum Composite Panels
over standing seam roof is used for the Facade cladding. The Overall height of the building is 52.5 M.
Structural Design:‐
Primary and secondary framework of steel structure forms the base of the football shape Façade. Pile foundation system with pile group‐
pile cap has been used for steel structure foundation design.
HVAC Design:‐
Outdoor Cooling of Stadium Pitch and Bleachers. Displacement cooling concept used for cooling the Bleachers and supply for Pitch from
Plenum around the Field of Play. On site Chilled Water production Facility designed of the Capacity 14800 TR.

The proposed roof covering over bleachers is designed as
Traditional Souq. Façade Colors is composed of Aluminum
Composite Panels, Glazing and Mashrabiya Panels. Over all
height of the building is 30 M.
Structural Design:‐
Portal framework of steel structure forms the base of roof.
Micro Pile foundation system has been used for steel structure
foundation design.
HVAC Design:‐
Outdoor Cooling of Stadium Pitch and Bleachers.
Throw from rear wall for cooling the Bleachers and supply for
Pitch from Plenum around the Field of Play. On site Chilled
Water production Facility designed of the Capacity 12000 TR
along with Ice storage of 28000TRh.
Achievements:
The World Stadium Congress Awards 2015 have been announced and QDC has been awarded the first runner up in the category of Stadium
Design of the Year. This was awarded as a recognition for the outstanding design of the Al Gharafa stadium and this design has already
bagged awards earlier this year for the Best Façade Design too. The award winning stadium design was designed by Mr. Mansoor Khan (Mr.
Bhupendra Pal Team) the Architectural Department in QDC.

The building is designed as a Steel framed structure with concrete decking slabs. The building is served with three stairs, one escalator, two J
elevators and one service elevator. The overall stability of the entire structure is provided by the elevator`s reinforced concrete wall combined E

Structural Salient Features:‐ T
The Structure has a cantilever projection of more than 8m and is stabilized by providing back anchors at the support locations.
The entire structure is supported on specially designed ground floor transfer slab.
The structure is stabilized for suction caused due to wind loads at the open space between the box and the cylinder. F
The inclination of the wall and columns produced gravity loads in the horizontal direction. E
The steel beams and columns were not connecting orthogonally and the connection design is made to overcome this challenge. A

Project Name: Katara Beach Club at Katara Cultural Village E
Structural Salient Features:‐
The huge plaza seating area is in an irregular shape. The curviness and the length of the structure was a big challenge but in the end the
stability was achieved.
The large span curved beams are designed to accommodate additional torsional forces.
The swimming pool is designed to withstand ground water buoyancy forces.
All underground concrete elements within the water table is provided with a concrete mix composed of crystalline admixtures to seal pores and
prevent hairline factures.

PROPOSALS AND CONTRACTS DEPARTMENT
The Art of Bidding
Competitive bidding is a transparent selection method in which bids from
competing contractors/ consultants/ vendors are invited against defined
work scope, specifications and terms & conditions of the proposed contract
as well as the criteria by which the bids will be evaluated. Due to ever
increasing competition in the market place, tender management or writing
a winning tender has become highly skilled and has evolved into an art by
itself.
QDC participates in a large number of competitive tender bids each year.
The Proposals department holds the primary responsibility of booking
suitable projects and undertakes Business Development activities for QDC,
in particular for the design department. During the year 2014, QDC sent out
timely responses to approximately 780 relevant and potential enquiries out
of approx. 1200 enquiries received, which includes as much as 50 nos.
Tender submissions. As its functional objective, the QDC Proposal
department strives to respond to 90% of the received enquiries and 100%
of the tender bids on time.
Sub mitting a tender bid always takes more effort in compiling the required technical and commercial inputs more than compiling a proposal for
any Request for Quotation. Any tender starts when an appropriate Invitation to Tender (ITT) has been identified in local newspaper or by direct
invitation by the client. ITT is a formal document that is published by a purchasing companies normally the client/ owner in order to notify other
bid ding companies.
The main activities in a Tender management usually include the following;
Analyzing the requirements within the ITT.
Working out a strategy for delivering and winning the tender.
Assembling a project team including specialist consultants.

Facilities. The Project is designated as “Green”, and therefore will be
executed using environment friendly technologies and construction
methods. Upon completion, the Project is expected to achieve “LEED
Silver” rating.

ENERGY & UTILITY DEPARTMENT
QDC’s young division Energy & Utility (E&U) showcases quality engineering consulting backed by sound knowledge and innovative approach.
Despite being a fresh unit to QDC, E&U has embossed a massive range of projects to its short span portfolio. E&U has emerged as a rapidly
growing multi‐discipline unit of QDC with distinct identity among existing market players into Oil & Gas and Utility Industries.
Achievements
E&U has achieved completion on a substantial number of projects it is handling (almost 50 out of 74), within just 2 years of its establishment.
E&U has completed multiple major & minor projects with various Qatar based companies like QATAR PETROLEUM (QP), QATAR GAS (QG),
QCHEM, QAFCO, QAL, QATALUM, RLOC and various others. Many of them have proven to be the success milestones. To name a few
pertaining to this category have been outlined here.
The first FEED project handled by E&U was for Installation of FO Cables from Land Fall Joint to QP Stations. Apart from technical competence,
the project necessitated a cumbersome liaising with various stakeholders. Above all, the job had a tightly woven schedule of 9 months.
Overcoming all constraints, E&U met the schedule and succeeded to conclude it within 9 months.
Offshore projects require remarkable expertise. E&U has flagged its existence in them as well. The first offshore project was Detailed
Engineering for Fire Water Pumps Flow Test Line Vibrations in LQ and PU Platform in QG1 upstream offshore. E&U again registered its
technical competence by successful completing the project.
A major oil & gas project at Dukhan Fields was Detailed Engineering for Piping Vibration and Stress Mitigation at RG Plant. This was also the
first project at Dukhan Fields taken up by E&U.
Another worth mentioning was Detailed Engineering for Installation of Check Valves on Phase 1 CLPG BOG Compressors for well renowned
JBOG Facility in Raslaffan.
E&U has also been into successfully conducting HAZID, HAZOP workshops for many projects, involving industry experts in this field.

Design is of great importance to E&U to fulfill the client requirement. Merely having a rough idea in hand is not enough. To be able to plan
with foresight is vital for ensuring that one is getting the best out of whatever expenditure and time is being put in. Thus, when it comes to

Seminar on ‐ GSAS Energy Assessment for Air Conditioned Stadiums
The Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) framework is
developed to be flexible and adaptable to any region. The primary objective
of GSAS is to create a sustainable built environment that minimizes
ecological impact while addressing specific regional needs and the
environment.
A seminar was held at St.Regis on 2nd April, 2015 regarding the
development of a building energy standard for air conditioned open
stadiums. The seminar was developed for regulating the design of new and
retrofit air conditioned stadiums, therefore it will be used in the pre‐design
or design stage. The seminar was attended by Mr. Biji.K.Thomas, Mr.
Amjath Khan, Mr. Ilayaraja and Mr. Jitheesh from QDC.
Seminar on ‐ Advance Cooling Technology in Stadiums
The IEI Qatar Chapter held a technical seminar on “Advance Cooling Technology in Stadiums” on 6th May 2015. The Speaker, Mr. Udit Kapur
and co speaker Mr. Vivek were recognized with a token of appreciation. Mr. Mukherjee, Mr. Ravishankar and Mr. Shyam Sundar also attended
the seminar representing QDC.

Arab Future Cities Summit (AFCS), the Middle East’s premier smart cities event took place on 13th ‐14th April 2015 at the Ritz‐Carlton in Doha,
Qatar. In its 4th year running, the event attracted over 300 senior level executives to discuss progress, efficient management of resources,
future developments and ways of making future cities work better in the Middle East.Mr. Biji.K.Thomas attended the event on behalf of the
BSE Section and gained valuable Intel on the planning and development of smart cities. The engineering practices discussed in the summit
were of immense importance to the BSE designs that will be rolled out for future smart city projects.
A seminar was conducted by Huawei on Active & Passive Telecom/Data Systems. This mainly focused on the latest storage bays and blade
servers provided by Huawei that could optimize space requirements for major Telecom and security Installations in big projects. The seminar
was attended by ELV Engineers Ms. Bindu, Mr. Nabeeh, Mr. Nithin and Ms. Sangeetha.
The Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) is the UK and Ireland's largest and most influential professional lighting association, dedicated
solely to excellence in lighting. A technical seminar was held on 21st April 2015 in Oryx Rotana, Doha about Global Lighting Design Experiences,
Architecture & Lighting: different modalities of connection, Considering Light Pollution in the Manufacturing Process. The seminar was
attended by Mr. Vivek Prasath & Mr. Madhivaran from QDC.

Experiences are one's understanding of the abilities one nurtures to seek, learn and adapt to our fast changing world. Somewhere in the R
realms of time began my journey through the ever adaptive and expanding field of architecture. Growing up has always been about design E
and its nooks in every corner of our world, of course in childlike ways back then, be it in the Lego blocks or the holiday adventures in the
Portuguese mansions of my hometown Goa.
Adolescence brought with it the usual, the objective to understanding purposes of most things. At this age began my self‐developed
conscience of evaluating designs and rearranging household furniture, in the very notion questioning the aspects of spaces and their use, a
process I came to fully understand and appreciate in my graduation years. This helped pave the way for my work years. Having being born
and raised in Qatar, I chose to pursue my internship with a well‐established local firm here. It was indeed an enriching experience that not
only helped question many of the fundamentals of design but helped analyze the concept of having to do things and then redo them, yet
have a different approach each time. Post‐graduation I joined the same firm again, after a brief period of understanding my approaches in
pursuance of my goals, a period which pushed me to work for another industry altogether, Logistics, again to help me understand that
Architecture it is that I have always been geared for.
Young that I am in my industry, with all my ideas and varied perceptions I carry on things, both architectural and not, I am still overjoyed at
the fact that so many years into my thoughts I have been able to still nurture my dream and pursue my goals. It has been a good
professional gain, one that I really appreciate and hope to definitely take further in my journey.
For with all the odds, past, present and future I still love being involved in an industry which encompasses other industries, which not only
helps fulfill my passion but reinstates my very purpose of this never ending journey . . .

SMART WORK Vs HARD WORK!
Working hard and working Smart can be two different things. Sometimes work feels like a drag. You get caught up in trying to be more
productive and suddenly your life turns into a series of to‐do lists. You even determine how happy you allow yourself to be by how much
you’ve gotten done in the day. When this occurs, work turns into a chore. You don’t enjoy the work, you just to do it so it can be over with.
But work doesn’t have to be like that. The point of work shouldn’t be just to finish. We spend a lot of time trying to find ways to be more
productive. To do things faster, better, cheaper and spend our time more effectively. But instead of just doing more in less time, maybe we
should focus on actually enjoying the work we’re doing instead.
Follow your natural rhythms. A lot of the time you might resent working because you're trying to force yourself to do something you
don’t feel like doing. How often do you force yourself to work more, when you really want to relax? When you force yourself to work
when you’ve promised yourself a break, you’ll likely just end up distracting yourself with other things and put off working. Then you
get stressed and end up resenting work. Instead, follow your natural rhythms. Don’t over complicate things. Also in situations where
you are forced to work make sure you set some small reward for yourself on the completion of the work. This will keep our motivation
high and also help in keeping you focused.
Only do your best, not the most perfect. Work can easily become a chore when you’re trying to constantly be perfect. The truth is,
some of your ideas might not be so great. Others will be mind‐blowing. If you can accept that and just do your best, you stop judging
yourself.
Act from your gut. When you think you have a great idea, believe it. Follow it. Chase it until you’re out of breath and can barely hold
yourself up. Trust in yourself. The best way to live is to follow your intuition and trust life.
Build up self Confidence. Self‐confidence, is an essential part of humanity. A person with self‐confidence generally likes himself, is
willing to take risks to achieve his personal and professional goals, and thinks positively about the future. Identify your negative
thoughts and overcome the pessimist in you. Connect with those who can help to keep your perspective uplifted. Identify your
talents. Discover the things at which you excel, and then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to take pride in them. Express
yourself, whether it's through art, music, writing.
Take every work as a challenge, and remember, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Let me conclude by taking the
words of Steve Jobs, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”

QDC TOASTMASTERS
QDC toastmasters is a club that was
started in 2009 and soon became a
part of a worldwide organization
that boasts of 313000 members in
14700 clubs across 126 countries.
This year has been a fruitful year for
QDC Toastmasters. Recognition has
poured in as people have
understood the depth of talent in
QDC toastmasters, ranging from the
amount of leadership roles at
division level to the excellent
performances at club, area and
division level.
The start of this term was marked by the election of our own TM Shyam Sundar as the
founding governor of Division Q. Division Q, since its inception and under the able
leadership of TM Shyam Sundar has become a force to reckon with in the toastmasters
sector and is currently one of the top divisions in the Middle East, something that is
unprecedented for a new division.
Division Q is also well supported by TM Gayathri Krishnamurthy from QDC Toastmasters who is currently the Division PR for Division
Q. The depth of talent in QDC toastmasters was well demonstrated in the club, area and division contests where toastmasters from
our club took away top spots in all forms of the contest.

Everyone performed splendidly at the area contests. We did win a few too!!!
QDC Toastmasters secured the first place in the Evaluation (Nithin Sathyasheelan) and Humorous Contests (Tesu Thomas) in the area
contests. TM Tesu from QDC Toastmasters went on to win the division contest too in the humorous category and will go on to
represent Qatar along with the Division Q winner at DTAC which will be held in Dubai on the 28th‐30th May 2015.

Q DC’s Sports at Its Best
QDC participated in the 6th championship of The Engineering S
Consultants Cricket Tournament held earlier this year. The QDC P
team, comprises of many talented expatriates and managed to O
thrash all the opposition teams and remained unbeaten with R
excellent team effort. The Management appreciated all the T
Cricketers for tremendous individual efforts and commitment to S
attain this success. Mr. Obaid was awarded the Man of the
tournament.
In relation to the Qatar National Sports Day, QDC held various
extracurricular events like Carroms, Chess, Badminton and Dart
in the QDC club on February 13th, 2015. The excellent
sportsmanship and participation from the QDC staff made this
