[Objectives]
This eBook is intended to provide information on surveying work,
safety best practices and key information needed to mitigate and
reduce risk when performing field surveying work.
GENERATIVE HSSE CULTURE is doing the right thing right
all the time, even when no one is watching
This is to be used to create and increase awareness among workers and
site team on surveyor’s roles, surveying instruments used and safety
precaution pertaining to survey activities at fabrication and construction
site.

How Are You Doing Your Part?
• Do not steps on the piping, mechanical or electrical instrument during survey
operations.
• Barricade the survey total station area to avoid interruption from other
personnel working on the same location.
• Switch off the red laser beam pointer of the total station when not in used to
avoid unnecessary contact with other workers working on the same area.

Survey Safety Tips
1 Always use latest drawing revision to avoid dispute and
wrong information.
Control station shall be clearly numbered to avoid possible
2 confusion during computations, or during subsequent surveys
by other surveyors.
Care should be taken to ensure the total station is footed
3 correctly and unable to move or slip. Neoprene or magnet can be
used to minimize slip and vibration effect.
Avoid unstable or loose structure contact when selecting
4 location for control station spread.
The condition of the structure needs to be assessed for corrosion
5 or oil / water coated as these can have a detrimental effect on
the survey results especially when using reflectorless
measurement.
6 Avoid survey station setup under suspended load or crane
moving path.

Control points are used to establish durable,
sustainable reference points to be used as the basis for
and throughout a project duration
Once the control points have been established, all
subsequent survey work adhering to the control survey
will be uniformed and seamless
Survey
Control
Points
Please do not remove, spray, or relocate when
you see sticker or marker like this at site
Each point has x, y, z coordinate Discuss with surveyor if relocation of
control point is really required due to
site critical activity

Maintain Good
Body Posture
Good posture during survey works helps in the following ways:
• Keeps bones and joints in the correct position (alignment)
so that muscles are being used properly.
• Decreases the strain on the ligaments in the spine.
• Fewer headaches
• Increased energy levels
• Less tension on shoulders and neck
• Increased lung capacity
• Improved circulation and digestion

Back Injury Prevention and
Proper Lifting Techniques
Back injuries can have serious, long-lasting effects on your health and ability to work.
Use Correct Lifting Techniques
1. Individual Lift
• Use your legs to lift, keep your back straight and keep the object
close to your body.
2. Team Lift
• When lifting objects heavier, ask for assistance and use a team lift

Fall Hazards
The following are examples of fall hazards.
Take appropriate precautions and follow
site-specific safety requirements.
• Unprotected sides or edges of a
walking or working surface.
• Scaffold/working platform that do
not have the strength and structural
integrity to support or yet to be
inspected.
• Falls from elevation to lower levels.
• Falls through floor openings.
• Falls through the floor or surface
(floor/surface collapses).
Fall Protection
• Fall protection is required when
working at heights of 2 meter or
higher.
• Guardrails, safety nets, and
personal fall arrest systems must
be inspected prior to each use.
• Use double lanyard safety body
harness
• Assess or calculate potential fall
distances as part of job pre-
planning.

Stay Safe &
Follow S.O.P
1. Use walkie talkie as communication device at
site or limit close contact with others by
maintaining a safe distance of at least 1 meter.
2. Wearing mask over nose and mouth to prevent
spreading the virus.
3. Keep in-person meetings (including toolbox talks
and safety meetings) as short as possible, limit
the number of workers in attendance, and use
social distancing practices.
4. Appropriate cleaning practices i.e. washing hand
frequently with soap and water, using alcohol-
based hand sanitizer, sanitizing survey
equipment and workstation frequently.
5. Whenever possible avoid face to face meeting
and use virtual platform for any work-related
discussion.
6. Limit casual (social) conversations that normally
occur at work.
7. Notify your team leader and stay at home if you
have symptoms.
8. Limit equipment or tool sharing if possible.
Play your part.
Stop the spread
of Covid-19.

Pre-Survey Safety Planning
You should know the location or focal person in-charge of the following:
First aid kit
Emergency action plan
Safety officer focal
Communication Plan
Mustering station
Supervisor in-charge of the area
What Should You Do?
• If you are not feeling well and have any personal health condition that could
result in an emergency, notify your team leader.
• Inform your team leader or co-worker about your survey location and
duration.
• Observe and determine if there are other site work activities that could
endanger your survey work.

Hazard Identification and Risk Control
No. Activities/Hazard Consequences Risk Control
1 Driving/Riding to the work site Car/Motorcycle accident
• Pre-departure check carried out on vehicle
2 Walking, surveying, and recce at site Twisting ankles and knees, • Comply with all state and site road laws
(Slips, trips and falls) impact injuries • Use familiar routes
3 Working in hot weather condition Dehydration, heat • Avoid obvious hazards such slippery surface,
exhaustion, sunburn loose structure, and uneven ground
4 Surveying and data record Risk of getting data lost • Remove hazards when possible
• Carry equipment in backpack to free hands
5 Manual handling of survey instrument Drop and asset damage
• Maintain hydration by ensuring adequate
6 Working near main pathway or Exhaust dust causing eye and drinking fluids and breaks
roadside respiratory irritation,
collision, and impact injuries. • Clothing – proper PPE and face/neck cover
Equipment damage • Encourage regular use of a sunscreen on any
7 Working near wharf, on the barge and Man overboard, equipment exposed skin
quayside area damage • Use communications devices i.e. walkie talkie,
8 Working at height Falls, impact injuries and handphone to ease communication and
equipment damage reduce survey time at open location
• Check and ensure initial setup, file name and
data record are correct
• Immediately download the data using pend
rive after complete survey task
• Use field sheet or drawing to record critical
information
• Assistant requested when required
• Rotation and breaks for repetitive work
• Use correct manual handling techniques
• Eliminate or minimize the need to work near
main pathway or roadside
• Use mask, safety glass and face cover
• Barricade survey equipment perimeter or use
survey assistant as watcher
• Know the boundary of survey area and always
remain within them
• Check weather forecast especially during
strong wind and monsoon season
• Buddy system (work in pairs)
• Wearing work vest
• Avoid working at height where it’s reasonably
practicable to do so
• Use safety body harness (double lanyard)
when working higher than 2 meters.
• Use non-contact/reflector-less survey function
at out of reach location

1. Heavy Lifting & Erection
• Verify all critical lifting points
position and orientation i.e. pad
eye, trunnion, and support for safe
lifting operation.
• Perform clash check to ensure no
hard clashing with existing
structure or pre-installed
components.
2. Weighing
• Monitor topside levelness during
weighing to establish good
horizontal center of gravity (COG)
before load cells reading from the
weighing controller can be
recorded.
• Correct COG determination from
weighing is crucial as data will be
used to finalize lifting configuration
for offshore installation.
3. Load Out & Cross Over
• Monitor skid beam, transporter, and barge
levelness during load out and cross over.
• Monitor structure alignment during
skidding operation.
• Determine and verify accurate grillage and
stopper position for safe and smooth load
out.
• Tidal monitoring for safe clearance and
ballasting operation.
