BASE Classes Seek Leaders in Gowrie and Fort Dodge

A new BASE Senior Fitness Class is being developed in Gowrie. Classes will meet at the Gowrie United
Methodist Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am. A number of people have already expressed an
interest in participating in the class. The key to starting a new class, however, is finding at least 2 people who
are willing to take on the responsibility of leading the class.

The BASE class meeting at the RSVP office in the Crossroads Mall in Fort Dodge also needs leaders. It is
currently being led by BASE leaders from other classes.

Leading a BASE class is a fairly simple matter, which
involves learning the exercise routine, and the
record-keeping process. Time commitment is two
hours per week, to be shared with at least one other
leader.

If you are a person who enjoys exercising and
meeting with others on a regular basis, you could
be a BASE Senior Fitness leader! Training is provided
by RSVP, along with a BASE leaders T-shirt.

For more information, call Becky at 515-832-2525.

The Inside Story: Elderbridge Meets Needs in
Northwest Iowa

Elderbridge Area Agency on Aging is one of six area agencies on
aging in Iowa, covering the northwest 29 counties. Elderbridge
services and activities are directed toward older adults, caregivers,
and adults with disabilities.

Among the many services that Elderbridge provides, a new line of
services provided by volunteers has recently been developed.

One of the new services provided by volunteers is called Errand
Buddies. The volunteer provides care and support through
transportation, errand-running, and/or emotional support. The vol-
unteers may assist with day-to-day activities such as: shopping, meal planning, driving to appointments,
post office, visiting friends, social events , celebrations, funerals, church services, events at local senior cen-
ter, meal outings, and other miscellaneous transportation. They also offer companionship to the Elder-
bridge client.

Medical Transportation Drivers provide transportation to medical appointments. The volunteers pick up the
participant at a designated time and transport them to the medical office and back home.

Telephone Reassurance Callers provide friendship and companionship as well as checking on the well-being
of participants. One or two calls per week are made on average.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities with Elderbridge, please call Becky at 515-832-2525.
