OUR PHILOSOPHY

The Board of Directors, staff and volunteers of the
Children’s Advocacy Center believe child abuse is a
community problem. Past experience has taught us
that no single agency can possibly meet all the needs
of sexually victimized children and their families.
Experience has also taught us that taking child victims
from agency to agency over and over for multiple
interviews, traumatizes the children and, in fact,
re¬victimizes them.

We are committed to providing a coordinated,
multi¬disciplinary team approach including Protective
Services, Law Enforcement, Prosecution, Medical and
Mental Health professionals. It is our goal to provide
programs and support services for child victims and
their families which will enable them to heal
emotionally and physically.

SARA’S STORY

It was the first month of school and I was in 3rd grade.
Wednesday morning we were working at our desks when a
lady came into our classroom I had never seen before. She
started to talk about how kids have rights to make choices
about their bodies and I could feel my face getting red. Did she
know, was she talking to me, what was going on? I didn’t hear
much of the presentation because I was just trying not to cry.
She told us that we had the right to choose what types of
touches we were comfortable with and we were asked to
write the name of three safe adults we could talk to if
something uncomfortable had happened. I couldn’t even
move my arms to write on my paper. I was sure she saw me
and she started to come over.
As she did, tears filled my eyes. My heart was sad and my
tummy hurt. She asked me if I would like to talk to her in
the hallway and somehow I got some of the words out. She
smiled at me, she told me she believed me, and she told me
she was going to tell some other people so she could help to
keep me safe.

4

SARA’S STORY

A few days later my mom drove me to the Children’s Advocacy Center.
She told me that I would be meeting with a lady to tell her about what
had happened and my job was to tell the truth. I was really nervous that
people would blame me for what happened and look at me different.
The lady I met with was really nice. She didn’t look at me funny or say
things were my fault.

After I told her what had happened she thanked me for coming in
and walked me back out to my mom. I felt so much better. My mom
hugged me and told me she was sorry it happened and that we were
going to be coming back to the CAC for a few more visits. She told me
the next visit was with the Dr. and I was glad to hear that. I was worried
something could be wrong with my body because when my step dad
touched me he really hurt my body.

SARA’S STORY

My mom took me to see a lady who works in a playroom filled with toys
and art, she called it “counseling." My counselor told me her job was to
help me with my thoughts and my feelings. I was just glad someone was
also talking to my mom. I could hear her crying in her bedroom some
nights and that would make me sad and scared. I think my mom thinks
it’s her fault this happened. I keep telling her it’s not.
My sister and brother are sad their dad is gone. Sometimes I feel sad for
them because I don’t have a dad either. That was one of the reasons I
never told what my step dad was doing. I didn’t want them to have to
grow up without a dad. They went to the CAC for a group for kids whose
families have changed because of the abuse.
I met a few more people today. They were also really nice. They told me
that what my mom’s boyfriend did was really wrong. They told me that
he had to have a punishment so they sent him to jail and we were going
to have to go to court and talk to the Judge. At first this sounded really
scary. I didn’t want to go talk to them.
When we did meet them and talk with them at court I felt a little better.
There were so many of them and they called themselves my team, I felt
kind of important. Because they were all there helping me I was able to
tell my story to the Judge even with my step dad in the room. He looked
at me mean once and I just looked at my mom and my team.
*These services were made possible by the generosity of donors and
companies who partner with us throughout the year.

FINANCIALS

CAC FISCAL YEAR OCTOBER 1-SEPTEMBER 30

16

As I reflect on the past year the first thing
that comes to mind is the word “Change." Our
country faces a dramatic change in leadership
and our Center has and will continue to
experience change as well. We have added
a Case Manager/Volunteer Coordinator and
have restructured our Development and
Marketing programs.

Our requests for Prevention Education DARCY KOMEJAN, MA
continue to grow and we are assessing the Executive Director
possibility of adding staff to this program.
We continue, however, to provide a safe,
child-friendly environment for children and
families and a dynamic, passionate, and
highly trained staff to meet their complex,
comprehensive needs.

I continue to be humbled by the tremendous generosity bestowed upon us
through your financial and in-kind contributions that make all of this possible.

I am excited to announce that the CAC board of directors has made the
decision to move forward with a building expansion project to accommodate
the change and growth we are experiencing. The building expansion will help
us meet the growing demands for the services provided by our programs.

I invite you to be our partner in Opening the Door to the Future for those
affected by child sexual abuse. 2018 will mark the 20-year anniversary of
the CAC of Ottawa County. We are planning many exciting events to
celebrate this milestone.
