Leadership and Sustainable Development Goals bestowed
significant relationship in charting the roles and values in the
higher education ecosystem. Higher education is an instrumental
journey for many today and the learning experience shapes the
generation for tomorrow. Analysing the challenges and new
expectations of higher education today, there is an urgency to
revisit the third mission of higher education in which university is
a place to seek and generate knowledge outside academic
environments to the benefit of social, cultural and economic
development. Keeping this close to the heart, it is instrumental for
leaders in higher education to embrace the values of SDG in
aligning university and society in the curriculum to provide the
understanding of transferring knowledge to contribute
significantly to the well-being of the society. Hence, Akademi
Kepimpinan Pendidikan Tinggi (AKEPT) in collaboration with
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) collectively believe in building
sharing in bridging university leaders to society. This
commitment is to align with the aspiration of the Ministry of
Higher Education as part of the ongoing initiatives under
University for Society in which SULAM is one of the
programmes.
The training of leaders in SDG requires concerted effort of all quarters in promoting the significance and impact
of universities in order to put a cohesive and consistent roadmap. It is hoped that the programme designed by
AKEPT and UMS for SDG Leadership with the theme SHARE Model for Leaders will eventually lead to fruitful
outcomes in building the leadership pipeline for the betterment of higher education. This strategic collaboration
between AKEPT and UMS is timely in creating value by strengthening roles of universities that eventually bring
impact to society. The relationship is instrumental in the higher education ecosystem that is a process of
transmitting knowledge and benefiting the social well-being and economy of the nation. Leaders with apt
competency in the current demands and expectations are sought for to sustain academic and social excellence of
universities. It is a role that AKEPT embraces in its planning and designing of modules and development
programme to ensure leaders today and tomorrow are given the exposure to real issues and the journey of
competent leaders begins today and this concerted effort has to be consistent and continuous among the Ministry
of Higher Education, AKEPT and Universities.
Utmost gratitude to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for the commitment and significant expertise injected in
terms of time, manpower and other resources involved in delivering this programme via hybrid mode that are;
online and face-to-face. To those who are given the opportunity to join this programme, I wish everyone a blessed
learning and network experience and to contribute back to respective universities to address needs and demands of
a larger community as well as stakeholders
PROFESSOR DR. NASRUDIN BIN MOHAMMED
Director
Akademi Kepimpinan Pendidikan Tinggi (AKEPT)
Assalamualaikum wbt. And Salam Sejahtera,
It is a privilege for Universiti Malaysia Sabah to collaborate with the
Akademi Kepimpinan Pendidikan Tinggi for developing a signature
leadership programme aimed to bringforth social obligations of
academia to our society. The programme, Sustainable Developmen
Goal Leadership: University for Society (SDGU4S) is specifically
crafted to inculcate the quality of shared leadership among potential
future leaders of universities in Malaysia towards community
Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). UMS, as one of the public
universities in the country, is the education hub in northern Borneo
highly dedicated to improving the socioeconomy and well-being of
mission through its attention in social services, UMS strives to apply
its expertise effectively and enhance ties between universities,
industries, professional bodies, social organizations and the
government towards the dynamic socio-economic development of the
nation as a whole.
SHARE Model for Leaders, as the theme of the program, is based on the SHARE framework that focuses on
preparing the academia for readiness and willingness on transferring relevant knowledge to the society through
shared leadership and relationship building with multiple entities. These entities are highlighted in the quadruple
helix framework, as emphasised in the concept of U4S, where the existence of a university must have a positive
impact on the community development. The leadership transformation brought through the knowledge transfer
platform from the academia is the essence of the action-based component in this program and explained
thoroughly in this book.
On behalf of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to AKEPT for the trust
given in implementing and successfully organizing the program. I am honoured to introduce the effort by the
academicians of UMS and congratulate them as the developers of this program for their outstanding
commitment and dedication in developing the model and anchoring this program successfully. Producing a
comprehensive book is a highly commended complement towards the success of this leadership program. To all
potential university leaders joining us, I wish everyone fruitful deliberations, huge success in collaborative
networking and enjoy hospitality.
Salam UMS Kampus Rahmah.

Vice-Chancellor,
Universiti Malaysia Sabah
On behalf of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, it is our privilege to be awarded this opportunity
to develop a leadership module for Akademi Kepimpinan Pendidikan Tinggi (AKEPT).
The motivational drive to produce a unique framework called SHARE model SHared
leaderhsip, Action-based, RElationship-building is stemmed from our own experiences
in engaging with the community in understanding the root of challenges that are relevant
to contextual setting. When this module was crafted, we understand the needs to have a
paradigm shift from the typical mindset of merely developing a community for a desired
output, but highlighting the spirit of leadership element embedded in the implementation
strategies of the module.
At the same juncture, the concept of University for Society, introduced in 2020
emphasises on the joint collaboration from multiple entities including academia,
community, government agencies, industry players, and non-governmental organisations,
for ensuring that the development of the community is in line with the SDGs. Recognising
distinctive virtues and expertise from each entity is the lynchpin for a joint effort to be
succesful. Hence, with this in mind, we embedded shared leadership as the main skeleton
in the SHARE model and to be demonstrated through action-based planning and
relationship-building.
We sincerely hope that this module, with the theme SHARE Model for Leaders, would
serve its purpose to enhance the leadership skills among the future university leaders
especially in fulfilling the social obligation of academia for the betterment of the society.
