It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Diversity Center’s 62nd Annual
Humanitarian Award Dinner. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you
for your ongoing friendship and support.
Our mission is to eliminate bias, bigotry, and racism through education and
advocacy. Our work helps create communities where all are connected,
respected, and valued.
The services provided to middle and high school students and their educators
are vital to our community and our future. Our programs will continue and
grow with strong support from the community, our friends, and our Board.
Please take a few minutes to welcome and talk with the student ambassadors
who are joining us this evening. Their stories will enlighten you about how
our work affects them.
I want to thank our Honorary Dinner Committee Co-Chairs and the entire
Honorary Dinner Committee who helped make this evening a success. I
especially want to thank our Dinner Board Co-Chairs, Steve O’Bryan, Rob
Soroka and Karen White, for their amazing and dedicated work.
Tonight we celebrate the remarkable work of Ronald Berkman, Margot Copeland and Eric Gordon. We celebrate

62nd Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner

e

Diversity
Center

of northeast ohio

I am pleased to welcome you to our 62nd Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner.
This is my 10th year as President and CEO of the Diversity Center, and it has
been a thrilling decade of growth, evolution, and compassion. As a nation, we
are constantly facing challenges in race relations, immigration issues, social
and economic justice, LGBT discrimination, educational disparities, and so
much more. It makes me realize, unfortunately, that our work and mission are
just as important today as they were when we were founded in 1927.
Your presence here tonight shows that you believe in creating communities
where all people are connected, respected, and valued.
Each year, the dedicated staff of The Diversity Center is challenged to provide
new and unique program offerings and their commitment is shown by our
success.
Every school and company is unique so every program we provide is designed
for that particular organization’s needs. Every camp and retreat requires
preparation, discussion, and detailed organization prior to its delivery. And it takes a team – from the program staff
who develop and facilitate the program, to marketing so people are aware of the program, to fundraising so we can
continue to provide the program.
We know our success is reliant on your commitment to us. We thank you for supporting us and helping us to grow
through your financial commitment, in-kind donations, and participation in our programs.
I thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate the remarkable work of Dr. Ron Berkman, Margot Copeland, and Eric
Gordon. Each has shown true leadership, humanity, and a desire to help the next generation from Northeast Ohio.
With appreciation,

Peggy Zone Fisher

2016 DIVERSITY EDUCATOR LEADERSHIP AWARD
Mya Sullivan

2016 DIVERSITY EDUCATOR LEADERSHIP AWARD

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Mya Sullivan has a long history with
diversity and the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio. As a student at
Cleveland Heights High School, she participated in NCCJ
(National Conference of Christians and Jews) sponsored activities with her church.
Many years later, she participated in retreats and workshops as a mathematics
educator and coach at Trinity High School. She collaborated with the Diversity
Center as Training Manager for City Year Cleveland. For ten years, Mya worked
at Laurel School in several capacities including math and social studies teacher,
coach, and most recently, Director of Equity and Inclusion. In that position, she
worked to solidify equity and inclusion work as skills-based work that is the
responsibility of every school leader. While at Laurel School, Mya continued
her collaboration with the Diversity Center allowing her students to attend the
retreats, luncheons, conferences, and Camp STARR. She continues that work in her
new role, Assistant Head of the Middle School, at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School,
a day and boarding school in the mountains of North Georgia.

2016 DIVERSITY STUDENT CITIZENSHIP AWARD
Berea-Midpark High School PRIDE Group

BEREAMIDPARK HIGH SCHOOL

Berea-Midpark High School’s PRIDE (persever-
ance, respect, integrity, diversity, excellence)
group, was founded in 2014, when Berea High
School and Midpark High School merged. PRIDE
consists of students who promote leadership, diver-
sity, respect, excellence, and spirit within our school,
classroom, athletic program, and community. Each
year, they choose a theme; the 2016-17 theme is
“Because I Said I Would,” which encourages students
and staff alike to honor and keep promises made as
individuals, students, teachers, and leaders.
PRIDE coordinates several student-centered activities
each school year, including “Unidad Latina,” which
is held during Spanish American month to promote
Latino culture; ‘’National Mix It Up Day”, when PRIDE
leaders are paired with sophomores to shadow and
experience each other’s classes for a day; “Interfaith
Celebration”, which allows students and community
members to discuss their faith and religion; and “Café Harambe”, held during Black History Month, one of their most
inclusive PRIDE events. “Cafe Harambe” honors the achievements of African Americans throughout history as hu-
man rights leaders, politicians, scholars, musicians, entertainers, authors, and athletes.
PRIDE leaders attend and participate in the DCNEO High School Conference held each year, and they’ve been
requested to give small group presentations to other middle and high school students of northeast Ohio who at-
tended the conferences to share their unique approach to building community.
PRIDE provides students with the opportunity to gain leadership skills, promote diversity awareness, and spread
unity and spirit within the school and community.

Paula Calmer

2016 PwC LeadDIVERSITY ALUMNI AWARD HONOREE

Paula Calmer has spent the past fifteen years working in Talent Acquisi-
tion and Human Resources supporting the Staffing, Financial Services,
and Retail Industries. Her experience has allowed her to develop
valuable skills in the areas of talent acquisition, staff retention, performance
management, change management, developmental coaching, and project
management. Paula is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a
dual B.A. in Public Relations and Women’s Studies.

In her current role, Paula is the Vice President and Senior Recruiting Manager
for the Retail West Branch Network at PNC Bank. She is located in Cleveland,
OH and manages 10 markets in 8 states across the company’s footprint. She
leads her team to develop and implement recruiting strategies while attract-
ing and hiring exceptional talent for PNC to meet their business needs.

Prior to joining PNC, Paula worked at Stanley Staffing in Cleveland and Akron,
OH, supporting multi-departmental third party recruiting for Call Center,
Technology, Recovery, Accounting, Finance, Legal, Operations, and Executive level roles.

Paula previously served as the Vice President of Diversity on the Board of The Cleveland Society of Human Resources.
For her leadership in that role, she earned an HR Award in 2015 for the committee’s commitment to Diversity. In addi-
tion, Paula was a finalist for an Archer Award for Talent Management in 2015. She enjoys volunteering in the commu-
nity and is a supporter of The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.

After taking the Lead Diversity course in 2013, Paula discovered that she could put her passion for D & I work to use in
a “real world” way. She was inspired particularly by a Holocaust survivor her class saw speak at the Maltz Museum of
Jewish Heritage and says she still thinks of her daily whenever she feels the urge to complain.

Paula lives in Avon, Ohio with her husband of 14 years, Brian, and their 3 year old son, Landon. She loves to travel and
has been lucky enough to go all over the world, but she has many places still on her list. She also enjoys reading and
biking, but her favorite thing to do is to spend time with her family and friends.
