ABOUT ME
Conor O’Loughlin
I am a student of the Landscape Architectural Technology program at the North-
ern Alberta Institute of Technology. I am the current President of the recently
reformed LAT Student Society and am working to introduce professional devel-
opment events to my fellow students. Pending acceptance, I plan to continue to
the University of Guelph to continue my studies in the Bachelor of Landscape
Architecture program. Prior to attending NAIT, I worked as a Survey Party Chief
for McElhanney and currently work with the company as a part time draftsper-
son. As an avid fan of golf, I hope to be involved with golf course reclamation
and construction in my future career but am also very eager to work on large
scale commercial and municipal projects.

AUTO- ENTRY FEATURE
CAD
The graphics shown highlight an assignment from
6 the first year of the NAIT LAT program in which an
entry feature had to be designed and drafted with an
emphasis on construction.

COMPUTER
RENDERINGS
SKETCHUP MODEL
Structures were created based off a
construction plan and objects were
added from the sketchup library for
this display.
RENDERING
Textures and plant material were
added and through irender, these
8 presentation images were produced.
PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN
& ILLUSTRATOR
After graphics and images are produced,
Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are
used to produce presentation boards,
covers, plans, and elevations.
The vision of “The Square Cafe” is to reduce the impact on the environment and to create
a welcoming and inviting place for all people to gather and connect. Each store design
is unique and reflects the use of local and natural materials to help connect our store
to the city and landscape it is located at.

HAND
GRAPHICS
PRESENTATION/CONCEPTUAL
GRAPHICS
Through the use of fine-liners, rendering markers, and
principles of perspective sketching, these graphics are
achieved.
10
FIGURE/GROUND
RELATIONSHIP
The diagram to the left illustrates
a figure ground relationship and
how through the use of three
shapes, many different spatial
relationships can be achieved.

DESIGN
DEVELOPMENT
PARKAY RESIDENCE DESIGN
PROCESS
We were provided with a Spanish Colonial house on a large
lot to develop a design for.
An Ideal Functional Diagram was drawn and informed
the development of a Concept Plan. From there, a Form
& Composition plan was drawn and lastly a Preliminary
Master Plan was created as the project deliverable.
Each of these plans were hand drafted.

3D SURFACES & UAV
SURFACES & MODELING
The surfaces displayed on this page were created from two different meth-
ods and display two different types of information.
In the left image, a surface to surface comparison is observed. Aerial pho-
tos taken by a drone were overlaid and processed to create a point cloud.
From there, an as-built surface was created and compared to a design sur-
face provided by the client. The large amount of red/orange areas indicate
a vast amount of fill remaining.
The right image is an elevation exhibit of the rough grade base for a holding
tank. The surface was created from a 5m grid topographical survey. The
client was mainly concerned with having positive drainage from the centre
of the tank so by method of contour lines and colour mapping, positive
drainage is shown.

UAV EARTHWORKS REPORT
The report displayed above is an example of a typical deliverable provided to a client looking to see what areas of an earthworks project require cut and
which areas require fill. Typically a cut/fill map is produced from a surface to surface comparison and overlaid on aerial imagery. A “Heat Map” is also
produced from the same surface to surface comparison and areas of cut and fill are shown by colour with a corresponding legend.
TECHNICAL
SURVEY
REPORTS
SITE AS-BUILT
The map shown here was created
over a one month period. Two weeks
were spent in th field locating buried
facilities and collecting as-built data
16 on all existing structures. The plan
covers a 40 acre area.
PIPING EXHIBIT FOR
CONSTRUCTION
ERROR DETECTION
The graphic on the left is an exhibit
of the design vs. as-built elevations of
an installed pump, vessel, and piping.
BURIED STRUCTURES REPORT
The graphic below is one out of a four page buried structures report. Over a
one week period, every utility shown was located and surveyed and relevant
structures were also surveyed. The four page report was drafted as part of the
ground disturbance process for Pembina to install a short pipeline between
caverns at their Redwater Terminal site.
17
SURVEY
SKETCHES
VALVE SITE SKETCH
An as-built sketch was hand drafted to aid the survey tech
drafting the data.
18
CONTROL SURVEY SKETCHES
Shown on this page are examples of various control survey sketches. The
network is ran with high precision survey instrumentation and detailed notes of
observations is required. Lines between points indicate an observation was made
while the arrows indicate what direction the shot was taken.
