INTRODUCING
The Social Committee
2020
HEATHER LEVY
Head of Committee
I have lived in Thornhill Estate for a little over 10 years, together with my husband and 4 children. I love spending time with my family and taking the kids to the many parks dotted around the estate & riding bikes with them. Being part of such a close knit community is important to me and all the social events held in Thornhill in the past have led to many great friendships. I believe we live in one of the most beautiful places in Joburg, with beautifully kept gardens and parks and friendly security and staff. Getting to meet your neighbours and make new friends is an added bonus! I’m really excited to be heading up the social committee in Thornhill.
LINDA FISHER
Administration
I love residing and working in Thornhill as it a wonderful community orientated estate. I enjoy assisting with the organising of the social events and love meeting and interacting with all the Thornhill Residents.

NJ KIRBY
Volunteer
I have been living in our gorgeous Estate for the past 9 years. My husband, Jonty, and I have been lucky enough to raise our 2 boys David-John(7) and Matt(5) in the estate. It has been such a privilege to watch our kids grow up in the Thornhill community, and have the freedom to take them for bike rides, walks, feed the ducks , play in the park in the safety of our gates. We have loved attending the social events in the estate. It has been an awesome way to socialise with the Thornhill community and our friends, but we all know these events don’t just happen, so I decided it was my chance to give back to the Thornhill community by joining the committee.
ANGELA CHERRINGTON
Volunteer
Angela has lived in Thornhill for 16 years and been a home owner for 12 of those years. She lives with Andre, has two step-ish daughters aged 20 and 11 and two fury rescue kids. The lifestyle and sense of community is the reason she loves the estate and finds people’s willingness to support their neighbours and community members very heart warming. Angela felt that offering to help on the social committee seemed like a natural for her to give back to this wonderful community.
KEN BROMFIELD
Volunteer
Ken Bromfield project manager and consulting civil engineer, married to Fran and resident in Thornhill Estate for 3 1/2 years. Lived previously in Lakeside for 5 years and served on their social committee. We have 5 children and
9 grandchildren living in Joburg, Sydney and Boston USA. We love the secure and casual lifestyle of our estate and even more so with all the conveniences now close by. The social events add to the quality of residing here and enable Neighbour’s and casual acquaintances to be become household friends who look out for each other.

ALEX PESCI
Volunteer
Extroverted introvert. Attorney. Fitness addict. Determined Dreamer.
I enjoy spending my weekends with my husband being outdoors and active. The thing I love most about living in Thornhill Estate is the freedom to run and walk our dogs in a beautiful, safe environment that makes you forget that you live in a crazy city. I am a “newbie” to the estate, having only moved in 6 months ago, but joining the social committee has helped me to meet lots of new people in the Thornhill community.
SANETTE SEAWARD
Volunteer
My Husband and I have lived in Thornhill Estate for 14 years. We have 3 Daughters and 3 Grandsons. Although only the 2 of us resident, our Grandchildren have spent many happy days in the parks and at the functions organised by the Social Committee. I believe after
so many happy years in the Estate I would like to give something back by joining the Social Committee as well as meet many more grateful families.
BARBARA-ANN RYAN
Volunteer
I am proud to call Thornhill Estate my home. My family and I moved here from Bedfordview four years ago, and have never looked back.
I have met many wonderful people within the estate, and enjoy being part of the community. From the incredible grounds keepers to the special people who take time to look after our and our children’s safety - I am immensely grateful.
I am so looking forward to 2020 being filled with great social events, and am thrilled to be a part of the social committee.

RAINFALL RECORDS
in Thornhill Estate
DAVE PATERSON
With growing concerns over a changing climate, and seemingly increasing erratic weather patterns, looking back at rainfall records for the local area can be quite telling. The trends have been rather interesting to note and might very well be contrary to what most have perceived it to be.
I’ve often been questioned as to why I actually keep note of the weather data so fastidiously. My answer to this is simple – it’s fascinating!
I’ve had a keen interest in climatic conditions from an early age. The weather has a major impact on our day to day lives, our moods, and the wellbeing of our environment.
A few years ago, during the early stages of the construction of the Flamingo Shopping Centre, the contractors were looking for the local rainfall data; much to my delight I had this data and was able to provide it to the contractor. I was rather pleased that this data could be of use for more than merely my interest.
I never did, however, establish the reason as to why they required the data.
Because I moved back to Modderfontein – where I grew up – in 2001, my rainfall data is split in two, namely; 1988 to end July 2001 for Birch Acres, and from August 2001 to date in Thornhill Estate.
For those climate enthusiasts, I’ve attached a graph setting out the annual averages over the past 18 years.

Some noticeable features are the major droughts we had in 2007 and recently in 2015, with the period of higher than average rainfall in between.
January and December 2010 registered wettest moths recorded in the last 18 years.
And I’m sure most people will remember the extreme flooding that occurred in 2016.
While last year may have been quite dry, this year is looking to end above the long-term average annual rainfall for Johannesburg of around 700mm.
What has made this year feel so dry though, as can clearly be seen, is the fact that between the months of April and November, not a drop of rain was seen.

ESSENTIAL OILS
DoTerra
SOPHIA GITTINGS
..Essential oils are literally a plant’s natural defense from disease, predators and weather. When we use essential oils, we are using the plant’s defense system for our benefit.
There are 2 primary ways essential oils are collected: steam distilled and cold pressed. Most plants are steam distilled, while all the citrus oils are cold pressed from the rind.
DoTerra means “Gift of the Earth”. Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade is DoTerra’s certification process that identifies the super strict testing process every batch of oils receive. DoTerra tests EVERY batch of oils, every time. The reason we can take certain oils internally is specifically because of how pure these oils are.
Enjoy these uses on just these 3 oils in and around your home...

LAVENDER
LEMON
1. SPOT-FREE DISHES - Add a few drops of lemon oil to your dishwasher soap container with each load. Your dishes will come out looking like new. spot- free!
2. CONTROL AN APHID INVASION – Aphids, those pesky little bugs that dine on your roses and other plants. Lemon oil (or peppermint) with water in a garden spray bottle are a natural pesticide that kills aphids and their larvae on contact, but leave your plants looking lovely.
3. PESTICIDE FREE FRUIT – Soak your store-bought fruit and veggies in a bowl of water with a few drops of lemon oil to rid them of all pesticides.
4. HONEYLICIOUS HAIR HIGHLIGHTS
- Skip the expensive salon highlight treatment, and use lemon oil to create your own hair highlights. Just go in the sun after using with your hair product, and it will lighten your hair. Be careful, it works well!
1. TAKE THE BITE OUT OF IT - Insects, creepies and crawlies are not too fond of the smell of lavender. In fact, they hate it. If you forget to go the prevention route, lavender soothes bites, itching and inflammation.
2. KIDS WON’T GO DOWN - Lavender drops on their pillows . it’s like magic. It will help ease their mind, calm
them down, make bedtime a bit more rewarding, and best of all, lull them into a restful sleep.
3. SOAK AWAY STRESS - Your muscles are tight. Anxiety and deadlines are eating at you. Your heart is racing. Where’s the pressure release valve? Right here, with lavender. Add to a warm bath, soak it in, soothe.
4. MINOR BURNS, MAJOR RELIEF - When you’ve slightly overdone it in the sun, a little lavender oil is helpful in preventing peeling skin. It aids in your skin’s healing without scarring as well!

PEPPERMINT
1. RESTORE VITALITY IN THE MOUTH - When your breath is sharp and your mouth feels furry, peppermint oil with water (and lemon oil) creates a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse that leaves a lasting crisp, clean feeling.
2. IT’S ABOUT AIR FLOW - When sinuses seem to be clogged, and throats swollen and scratchy, diffuse peppermint oil (or apply topically on the chest) for almost immediate relief and revitalizing air flow. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may provide relief for colds, cough, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.
3. CHASE AWAY TENSION HEADACHES - Got a mind-numbing headache? A few drops of peppermint dabbed on your temples, neck and sinuses can quickly spring into action and chase that headache away!
4. CLEAN NATURALLY - Peppermint oil is a wonderful natural cleaning agent because it has anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Spray on counter tops and bathroom surfaces, scrub, and enjoy a cleaner clean.

GREEN LIVING
in 2020 & beyond
JANITA JANSEN
We all know that we should reduce our consumption, be conscious of our planet and resources and make small adjustments to have a big impact, but many of us feel overwhelmed and don’t quite know where to start! Here are some handy A – Z suggestions to get you going:
Aerosols: Every time you spritz, you are releasing hydrocarbons into the air, contributing to the ozone’s “greenhouse” effect. This includes deodorants, air fresheners, non-stick cooking sprays and insect repellents. Instead, make your own air fresheners and insect repellents using essential oils, burn scented candles and use coconut oil to line baking trays instead.
13

Bicycle: With the development of the Flamingo shopping centre and every convenience that offers, why not cycle to the shops instead of using your car? If every household uses a bicycle once a day instead of a car, think of all the emissions we’re eliminating!
Compost: Create an area in your garden to compost everything from garden waste to organic kitchen waste. Not only are you reducing your waste, but you are making your own garden fertilizer.
Dressing: Recycling clothes, especially for households with small children, allows for clothes to be re-used rather than ending up in landfills. Hand clothing items down to smaller children or donate them to charities. Ladies, why not have a “wardrobe exchange” with a group of friends – a fresh new look that costs nothing!
E
G
H
Install greywater tanks: Another great way to reduce water consumption is to recycle household water through a greywater system, which filters used water to be used in the garden or for washing again.
Jumble sales: Selling or giving away unwanted toys, appliances, clothes or books prevents these items from being dumped in a landfill and being re-used instead.
Know your ingredients: This goes for food and cleaning products alike. Read the ingredients in packaging to ensure you are not consuming nasty colourants, flavourants, preservatives and MSG. Try and avoid petrochemicals and poisonous ingredients in personal care and household cleaners.
Lightbulbs: Recycle used lightbulbs to avoid the chemicals in LED lights to seep into the groundwater tables. These chemicals are extremely toxic and will kill human, animal and plant life if left on a landfill.
at clean: Avoid buying and eating processed and heavily packaged food. Instead, eat food as close to its original condition as possible, deriving all the nutrients without the added nasties.
F
ilter: Use a filter for your washing machine outlet. A huge percentage of our clothes contain synthetic micro fibres, which are washed into oceans through washing cycles.
lass (and bamboo): Use glass containers to store food instead of plastic, which seeps nasty toxins into food. Use bamboo disposable cutlery and crockery instead of plastic or paper as bamboo is a fast growing, easily replenished natural resource that is completely biodegradable.
arvest rain water: Install a couple of rainwater tanks around the house and direct gutters into the tanks to harvest rain water to irrigate gardens rather than municipal water.
14

Medicine: Instead of throwing expired medicine down the drain, hand it in at your local pharmacy to be responsibly disposed of or incinerated. Medicine also seeps into groundwater and eventually into oceans, making the water toxic and lethal.
Natural cleaning products: Consider switching to natural cleaning products that don’t contain any toxic ingredients. This is safer for insects (which we need), humans and animals alike and it makes your environment clean and fresh without chemicals.
Organic food: Whenever possible, source organic, free range uninterfered with food. This way you’re not only ensuring that you get all the good nutrients, but you are being much kinder to the animals and environment.
P
R
S
ick up rubbish: When out walking or bicycling or picnicking and you notice rubbish lying around, make an effort to just pick it up. And, of course, don’t throw your own rubbish out of the car window!
Q
uestion your footprint: Always consider what impact you have on your environment and make the necessary, accessible changes.
ecycle: Recycling here in the estate is super easy as it is collected every week and you don’t necessarily have to separate your plastic/tin/glass, just the paper. Do rinse your recycling rubbish before you dispose of it though to prevent stuck food from going rancid, decomposing or becoming smelly.
olar energy: Although solar energy solutions are still debilitatingly expensive for most households, switch to solar where you can, such as using solar gadgets to charge electronic devices, solar garden lights or solar geysers.

Toothbrushes: Strange item on the list, I know, but our plastic disposable toothbrushes end up on landfills. Millions of them. Try and use bamboo disposable toothbrushes or switching to electric toothbrushes instead.
Use less plastic: Consider every bit of plastic you use, from shopping bags to food bags to food packaging to straws. The list is disturbingly endless. Consider where you could use alternatives such as reusable shopping bags (which you always keep in the car), steel or paper straws, reusable vegetable bags or any compostable alternatives.
Veggie garden: Grow your own veggies and herbs. Not only do you have fresh food on tap and saving the environment in the process, you will also derive great pleasure and satisfaction from growing your own food.
Walk in nature: We have access to the road reserve or along the watercourse to some beautiful outdoor walking in our estate, which is completely safe. Why not take your fur- babies out too? Remember to take along a poop scoop of some sort and keep your pets on leashes.
Xylitol: Instead of artificial sweeteners or cane sugar, use xylitol as a natural sweetener instead. It is far a far safer, healthier alternative.
Yes! To low energy appliances: when the time comes to replace appliances such as fridges, freezers, washing machines etc., choose low energy appliances.
Zero exceptions: Everyone knows the saying “It’s just one straw, said 8 billion people” which rings true when you embark on this endeavour. Always do the right thing without exception.
