The Spekboon Challenge
takes root in SA (& Thornhill Estate)
EDITOR
Various people and organisations all over SA are planting spekboom as part of the #SpekboomChallenge. Here’s why:
The humble Spekboom (that is mainly found in the Eastern Cape) can gobble up between 4 & 10 tons of carbon per hectare per year. It is said to be South Africa’s ‘wonder plant’.
This incredible tree uses carbon
to make plant tissue and produce oxygen. According to The Spekboom Foundation, spekboom’s capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is compared to that of moist, subtropical forests. This remarkable plant is unique in that it stores solar energy to perform photosynthesis at night.
This makes a spekboom thicket 10 times more effective per hectare at carbon xing than any tropical rainforest.”
The spekboom is also great at adapting to its surroundings and can ourish almost anywhere. It makes wonderful hedges and beautiful shrubs and, can be planted in elds, owerbeds and pots.
Spekbook absorbs the highest amount of carbon dioxide when compared to any other plant in existence.
It is highly water-wise, needing up to half the water of other plants to survive.
Spekboom can live up to 200 years!!
8

It’s also nutritious!! The Vitamin-C-rich plant is starting to feature in more and more recipes.
Besides individuals taking part in the spekboom challenge, there are various initiatives across the country to champion the cause of planting spekboom as an environmentally friendly act.
One such spekboom promoter is Abraham Enzo van Vuuren, president of the Greater Magaliesberg Biosphere Business Chamber and founder of Heal the World 4 Us.
He has carried a baby Spekboom tree
in an incubator around his neck and since 2014. He runs a project that creates awareness about the plant’s unique properties and sells Spekboom plants to school children and various businesses.
Another ambitious spekboom project is known as The Great Labyrinth of Africa with plans to create the largest labyrinth in the world by planting 165,000 spekboom bushes in Klapmuts, near Stellenbosch, in February.
Heart Capital, the group behind the project, has run into a problem and is appealing for funds to lay some water pipes to keep the nearly 200,000 bushes that it has grown over the last three years alive, as watering them by hand is impossible.
COME ON THORNHILL... Let’s accept the #spekboomchallenge - get growing and do our bit for planet Earth.
If anyone is interested in growing their own plant in their own garden, creating school projects for their kids or helping the Estate to create our own mini Labyrinth - please email #spekboomchallenge to: [email protected].
We will be in touch with more information on this challenge later in March.

Our Thornhill social events plan kicked off for the year on 1 February with Movies in Park. Our community gathered in the Main Park and got
to enjoy free popcorn for all. At the last count, we had popped over 10kgs of popcorn pips !! The weather held out we had a fantastic turn out with what we expect was over 150 people. Scattered across the soccer pitch, people spread out on bean bags and camp chairs ready to take in the shows. We kicked off our viewing with Toy Story 4 and just as we were getting into our second showing, Lion King, we were plunged into darkness with a power outage in the area.
At least we got to share part of the evening with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and friends and fun was had by all.
Thank you to our Social Committee for their planning and support, we look forward to the next event.

Recipe of the Month
Avo Banana Bread
WOOLWORTHS
It all about NO WASTE and MAXIMUM NUTRITION these days.
What if you could achieve both of those, and not lose out on taste and appearance - seriously this recipe is a no brainer!
Easy enough for the kids to get involved too. #bakersdaywinner
12

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C and grease a 22 cm loaf tin or 1 x 15 cm cake tin, 1 x 11.5 cm cake tin and 1 x 9 cm cake tin.
2. Cut the ends off the bananas and blend the bananas and skins in a blender.
3. In a large bowl, mix the melted butter, sugar and eggs until light and uffy. Mix in the
banana.
4. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and gently fold in the banana mixture.
5. Bake for 30 minutes (depending on your cake tin size), or until golden and cooked
through. Allow to cool.
6. To make the avo frosting, place all the ingredients into a blender and blitz until
smooth. If you’ve made three cakes, use the icing to sandwich them together and
decorate the outside. If you made a loaf, spread the icing onto the top and sides.
7. To make the garnish, place the beetroot and carrot peels on a baking tray and
sprinkle over some cinnamon sugar. Bake until crispy. Top the iced banana cake with
the crispy beetroot and carrot peels.
8. Cook’s note: Banana peels: great for practical jokes, brilliant in banana bread. When
bananas are overripe, the skins also become thinner, softer and sweeter. Blitz them into a batter with the banana itself for a smooth, creamy result. They also add extra bre to the loaf. It’s a win-win.
9. Serve in a cute bowl with a drizzle of Olive Oil and a sprinle of parsley.
