ISIDLEKE - The Nest (Val Bonne Country Estate)
At the heart of the Modderfontein Reserve is a small complex of buildings called
Isidleke, which means “the nest” in Zulu. Isidleke is made up of 3 buildings: the old barn, Dobb’s
House and an office complex. The old barn was built in 1900 by Randlord Sir Alfred Beit, who
was once the owner of a hunting lodge in the area. The only part of the hunting lodge that
remains today is the observation tower. The barn was used to stage carriages and horses and
has been restored to its former glory and up for hire as a venue. The old estate manager’s
house, Dobb’s House, built in 1934 has also been restored and is now the restaurant.

Venue Hire

AVAILABLE ON SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS

Thornhill Estate is fortunate to include a well equipped, open-plan Community Centre.
This recreation hub offers a variety of recreational programmes during the week,
however on weekends it is available to the residents (only) of the Estate to hire for
private functions. The Centre boasts both indoor and outdoor space, a covered balcony,
bathrooms, kitchen and a lovely view over the pools and river. The parks and pool areas
remain open to the residents at all times.

In the past residents have hosted weddings, awards ceremonies, birthdays, year-end
functions, meetings, showers and workshops to name a few.

Venue hire includes tables, chairs, cutlery and crockery. It is the responsibility of the host
to ensure the venue is cleaned after use. There is a max capacity of 50 people. THOA asks
all hosts to be mindful and respectful to residents who live around the area during your
function.

ANNONYMOUS LETTER TO THOA

Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a prosperous new year and trust that you all enjoyed your time off over the
festive season.

I have written this letter anonymously in the hope that it will be published in one of Thornhill’s monthly magazines.
My intention is purely to inspire guilty parties to change their attitudes.

I am a resident in Thornhill Estate and spend my holidays at home. No traffic and crowds of holiday makers to
contend with. But while sitting on my patio trying to enjoy my time off, I noticed the constant barking of lonely
dogs. Then it struck me, these are the poor animals that are left home alone, while their owners are away on
holiday. Not only were their owners away on holiday, but their owners were probably somewhere enjoying the
peaceful tranquillity wherever they were. Those of us who elected to stay home were not quite so fortunate.

To make sure of the facts I spent a lot time walking the estate. It was evident that most of these houses,
where the barking was coming from, were vacant for the holidays.

Dogs require attention, and no, not the attention of some person arriving once or twice a day for five minutes to
quickly throw some food and water in a bowl. You cannot blame the dog for being frustrated at being left alone.
The blame should lay squarely on the shoulders of that inconsiderate someone who simply has no consideration
for their pets and neighbours.

I know of some estates that have dogs removed to the nearest SPCA in these circumstances. On their return the
dog’s owners have some hefty penalties imposed by the SPCA for having to look after these animals. Perhaps the
THOA could look at including this rule in future?

People, it really is simply a question of respect and consideration for those around you, as well as for your pets’
wellbeing. We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful and safe environment here at Thornhill Estate, please
don’t spoil it for those around you.
