PRINCIPLE IN TEACHING

My principle in teaching is, I wanted to create an active learning environment
for my future students. As we can see now, every country in the world is in a
pandemic situation because of the Covid-19 virus that has spread around the
world. Because of the pandemic, many schools have been ordered to close by
the governments as a safety precaution for the students. When the school is
ordered to close, students now have difficulties to blend in into the new norm
where all the students have to learn their school lesson using online platforms.
So, I wanted to create an active learning environment even though I need to
teach using an online platform and I want my students to enjoy the lesson and
also will be interested in joining the next lesson.

Other than that, I believe that every classroom has its own unique community,
so in my role as a teacher, I need to assist all my students in developing their
own potential and learning styles. In order to achieve this, I need to create a
different learning style and also focus on the weak students so that no
students will feel left out or could not keep up with my lesson. All students are
individuals that can learn in their own unique ways. So, I as their teacher need
to find and use multiple methods of teaching to reach students so that no one is
left behind.

I also believe that a classroom should be a safe and caring community where
children are free to speak their mind and blossom and grow. So I wanted to
create a strategy where the classroom community will be able to flourish, for
example, having a morning meeting with my students and asking about their well
being, doing some classroom activity and helping students that have problems.

Creating a welcoming space for learning is so important, especially for the
youngest learners. As an elementary teacher, I am acutely aware that I am
defining the school experience for my students. I will make sure I will work
hard to make that experience positive and a nurturing one.

LECTURE REFLECTION

TOPIC 1 - UNDERSTANDING TEACHING AND MICROTEACHING
● For this topic, it introduced me to the subject microteaching where

microteaching is a program for teachers where it is used to enhance their
classroom attitude and behavior. Within this topic I have learned that
microteaching has a lot of advantages that it can prepare students for their
practicum such as showing students how to face an actual classroom and to
get their confidence in teaching.

TOPIC 2 - TEACHING AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES
● For this topic, I have learned to identify components of learning objectives

statements from the examples given and I also learn to write statements of
learning objectives by interpreting content standard and learning standard
based on the steps provided. A good learning outcome will be able to achieve
an effective course design, effective assessment of learning, a better time
management, improved communication and also improved teaching
experience.

TOPIC 3 - SET INDUCTION
● For topic 3, we get the chance to learn about what is set induction. So

basically, set induction is a step taken by the teacher to begin a lesson or
other classroom activity. Set induction also can be used to introduce topics
and get students focused and interested in the lesson. Set induction makes
sure that the teacher is concerned with the way of inducing the teaching
and learning process.

TOPIC 4 - STIMULUS VARIATION
● In topic 4, we learn about stimulus variation where it is a way of enhancing

students' learning by helping them remain attentive. Stimulus variation is
also a way of maintaining students' attention. Some of the factors to get
students attention are intensity, contrast, movement, audio-visual aids and
also teacher’’s behaviour.

TOPIC 5 - QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES
● In this topic, I learn about the effective questioning sessions in the

classroom that require advance preparation. I also learned to apply bloom’s
taxonomy based on the students proficiency level. Other than that, I am
also able to learn to identify strategies to handle students' responses to
questions.

TOPIC 6 - REINFORCEMENT STRATEGIES
● In this topic, I learn that reinforcement can be both positive and negative.

A positive reinforcement means to present or provide a stimulus immediately
by following a behavior. Reinforcement strategies provide the basic principle
that suggest that a behavior will occur more frequently if it is immediately
followed by the presentation of a reinforcer.

TOPIC 7 - TEACHING AIDS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING
● For topic 7, I learned that a teaching aid is anything that is used by the

teacher to help them to teach a lesson or making the lesson more interesting
to students. Teaching aids can be in many types such as visual aids, audio
aids or even audio-visual aids. Teaching aids are used to engage students into
the topic that is being taught.

TOPIC 8 - CLOSURE IN A LESSON
● In this topic, I learned that closure is the step in a lesson where you wrap up

a lesson plan and help students to organize the information in a meaningful
context in their mind. The purpose of a closure in a lesson is to review the
key points of the lesson and give a conclusion for the topic of that day's
lesson.

TOPIC 9 - USE OF WHITE/BLACKBOARD IN CLASSROOM
● In this last topic, I learned that the modern concept of the classroom is full

of tools and techniques to keep children engaged and learning from morning
until afternoon. A lot of benefits that we can acquire such as it can increase
student engagement in the classroom and also allows for a quick assessment.

PROJECT 1 REFLECTION ( TASK A )

SET INDUCTION
● For my set induction mock teaching during the tutorial, I started my class by

showing pictures that are related to Malaysian legends and folklore and asking my
students a few questions that are related to Malaysian legends and folklore. I
managed to finish my set induction presentation before the time limit. Miss Sadia,
our tutorial Micro Teaching lecturer, left a few good comments for my set
induction as my ideas for my set induction were good. My classmates also give me
some good comments about my set induction mock teaching as my lesson is
interesting.

STIMULUS VARIANTS
● For my stimulus variants mock teaching during tutorial, I created an activity where

students will listen to an audio about Malaysian folklore Bujang Senang that I voice
up by myself. Students will listen to the audio for 2 times, students have to answer
5 questions based on the audio. I then divide the students into groups and they
have to answer those 5 questions in a mind map format. Miss Sadia gave me some
good comments for my stimulus variants activity and I am able to finish my mock
teacher before time limit. My classmates also give me some good comments as I use
a good intonation to speak to my students and I have a good interaction with them.

QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES
● For my questioning techniques for mock teaching during the tutorial, I make a

question and answer session with my students where I will be asking my students a
few random questions about Malaysian legends and folklore to test their knowledge
about that topic. I was not able to finish within the time limit, but Miss Sadia said
that I had created a good question for my students as my questions are HOTS
questions and I am able to make students go out of their comfort zone. My
classmates also left out a good comment as the question was very interesting to

them.

REINFORCEMENT STRATEGIES
● For my reinforcement strategies for mock teaching during the tutorial, I started

the activity by sharing a padlet link to my students that I had created with a
reading questions that are available in the padlet link. Students are required to
answer those questions in a mind map format. Students will be able to find the
answer by reading the passage that I have prepared in the padlet link. Miss Sadia
commented that it was a good activity that I had created but she thinks I could
have created a better activity. My classmates give out good comments about my
mock teaching as I have good interaction with my students.

CLOSURE
● For my closure for mock teaching during the tutorial, I summarize my whole lesson

about the topic Malaysian legends and folklore. I give more explanation and
highlight the key point of the lesson. Before ending the lesson, I played a short
game with my students called “What am I?” and I showed a very short teaser video
about our next lesson topic. Miss Sadia commented that my closure is too short and
fast as I still have an extra 3 minutes before the time limit ends but she also said
my lesson is interesting and she did enjoy my mock teaching. My classmates also
commented that my lesson is very interesting to them and I have a good interaction
with my students.

PROJECT 1 REFLECTION ( TASK B )

For this project, we are required to develop a blog for the teaching and learning of
ESL for any chosen form based on the KSSR DSKP for the purpose of student’s
independent learning. So for this project, I has team up with one of my classmate,
Muhammad Zakwan Haris, where we both decided to pick year 5 topic 9 which is space
exploration for our main theme for the ESL blog learning. We divide our tasks equally
as Zakwan is in charge of editing the website and I need to find and create all the
activities that we are going to put in our ESL blog. It was indeed a hard task for me as
I needed to find and create a total of 8 activities with 4 language skills included. The
presentation was successful but we had a bit of a mistake where we forgot to type out
the content standard and learning standard for every activity but Madam Nirmala was
happy with our content in the blog as the activities we created are fun and interesting.
Other than that, Madam Nirmala also said it was very beautiful as we decorate the
blog with a space theme.

PROJECT 2 REFLECTION ( MOCK TEACHING )

For this project, we are required to prepare a lesson plan for a 30 minutes online
lesson. For this project, I had to work alone as it is an individual project. For this
project, Madam Nirmala has decided for me that I need to do a mock teaching for year
2 class using listening skills as my main language skills. For the topic, I can choose any
topic from year 2 so I choose unit 7 which is hobbies as my topic for the lesson plan
and mock teacher. During the time given, I work a lot on making lesson plans as I need
to figure out what kind of activity and task that I can do for my mock teaching. I was
the first one to present my lesson plan and mock teaching. Madam Nirmala commented
that I need to work more on my lesson development because it was quite confusing.
Other than that, Madam Nirmala praises me that I have a good interaction with my
students and I am able to make good learning objectives.

OVERALL REFLECTION ( MICROTEACHING CLASS )

Micro-teaching was indeed a good subject for students that are preparing themself to
go for their practicum. Micro-teaching is a special teaching practice model or teaching
training method. Micro-teaching helps me and other students in developing various
skills in trainees as well as the current teaching staff. It helps in improving the
handling skills of the teachers and it also gives better opportunities due to small-scale
teaching.

Micro-teaching is also a good subject for my personality enhancer too. Due to several
micro-teaching activities and practices, micro-teaching effectively increases my
confidence level to be a teacher. Moreover, the experience of teaching enables me to
better classroom management. Other than that, a positive attitude contributes to
better results. For me, one of the objectives of this program is also to guide the
trainees to attain a positive attitude towards any criticism. As a result, negative
feedback given in a positive way helps to motivate the trainees to strive for
betterment.

During this short semester, I am able to learn a lot on how to create and make a
proper classroom lesson with a proper lesson plan. I am also able to see and share
opinions with my other fellow classmates about their and my weakness and strength.
During this short of time, we all work hard to improve our teaching skills as we need to
be ready for our practicum that is just around the corner.

It was all thanks to Madam Nirmala Devi and Miss Sadia Iqbal for their proper
teaching and guidance in preparing me and my classmates for our practicum. A lot of
tips and skills that have been shared by them along all the lectures and tutorial lessons
with them. I believe that a good teacher can prepare a better teacher in the future if
the students keep on seeking to improve themself.

EDUCATION IS
NOT
PREPARATION
FOR LIFE,
EDUCATION IS
LIFE ITSELF.
