Introduction

One of the works of Javanese culture is the kuda kepang. None of the historical
records explains the origin of this dance. Kuda kepang or also called kuda lumping or
jathilan. In the kuda kepang dance, the trance process takes place through the calling
of the spirit or called endang through the songs that are played. In the International
Classification of Disease Edition (ICD-10), it is called trance and possession disorders
and in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders five editions (DSM-5)
it is included into Other Specified Dissociative Disorder. (Thomas Hendriko and Elmei-
da Effendy, 2019)

Kuda Kepang, which originated from Java, is one of the Malay traditional dance the-

atre forms that incorporate trance in its performance. Brought over to Tanah Melayu

(Malaya) by Javanese immigrants it is exclusively performed by members of the Java-

nese community who have acculturated into the Malay cultural milieu. (Thomas Hen-

driko and Elmeida Effendy, 2019)

Problem Statement

- Lack of care and exposure to the younger generation
- Dance movements that are difficult to understand and not in the interest of the
current generation
- The existence of modern dance and easily accessible applications

Objectives

- To identify the kuda kepang dance performance
- To explain the basic concept of a kuda kepang dance performance
- To educate the public regarding kuda kepang performance

Methodology

- Questionnaires are a good way to obtain information from a large number of people
and/or people, 50 respondents required to gain the knowledge and information about
kuda kepang Johor around 18 years old aged.

A. Strength
1. Increase the focus of a dancer.
2. As a cultural symbol.
3. Making the dancer proficient with the tools used.
4. A combination of animistic or spiritual elements.

1. Traditional cultural art that is increasingly being swallowed up by time.
2. The existence of a simpler and more unique dance.
3. There is a spiritual element.
4. Influencing religious behaviour.

C. Opportunities
1. Can identify the type of dance being danced.
2. Teenagers recognize the culture practiced by generations before them.
3. Able to expend the knowledge of kudang kapang dance among teenagers.
D. Threats
1. The presence of a spiritual element.
2. Difficult to control under subconscious conditions.

Survey

This survey has been conducted with 50 respondents. It has been posted in an online
form using Google Form platform and has been distributed to the target audience
which are public citizens. The survey took 2 weeks to be completed.

Question 1, Age. The pie chart 01 shows
64% of the respondents 18-24 years old,
30% are 25-34 years old, 4% are 35 and
above while 2% are under 18 years old.

shows 80% of the respondents choose
there is a modern and unique dance,
has a mystical element and the exis-
tence of outside influences whiles 28%
choose others causes.

Findings

From the survey that has been carried out, it can be concludes that the respondents
mostly aged between 18-24 years old and were from Johor. 98% of the respondents
know about kuda kepang. The main source of information regarding kuda kepang
Johor dance was e-book, book and social media platform. 66% of the respondents
know when the kuda kepang dance will be performed. Based on data, 90% choose
yes, know why kuda keapang dance are less popular among young people. Next, 58%
respondents also do not know about the types of kuda kepang dance. It seems 74% of
the respondents choose yes about the government and heritage foundation in taking
steps to protect and promote kuda kepang dance while 26% choose no. 92% choose
yes about do children need to be exposed to kuda kepang dance. The respondents
also agreed that there is a modern and unique dance, has a mystical element and the
existence of outside influences with 80%.

Design Strategies

1. Publication E-book about Kuda kepang Johor dance. (Explain the origin of the exis-
tence of the kuda kepang. Also, explain how the kuda kepang dance is played in
groups)

2. Create a youtube ads storyboard of kuda kepang Johor dance. (Explain the origin of
the existence of the kuda kepang. Also, explain how the kuda kepang dance is played
in groups)

3. Create a series of poster. (Shows the differences in the types of kuda kepang. In terms
of dances or horses being played. At the same time, show different dances performed)

4. Create a website about kuda kepang Johor. This will be easier to access it, this web-

site provides the origin of kuda kepang Johor, also provide the information about the

items and role that played.
