In the past, Malaysia known as
Malaya. Malaya became independent

on 31 August 1957. The place of the
declaration of independence was at
the Merdeka Stadium. It was officially
proclaimed by Tunku Abdul Rahman
Putra Al-Haj, the first Chief Minister of

the Federation of Malaya.

Baju Melayu is a traditional costume, originated
from the court of Malacca. It literally translates
as Malay dress and consists of two main parts.

Baju Kurung is a traditional costume originated
from Sumatra, and Malay peninsula, and is
traditionally worn by women in Brunei,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and southern

Thailand. This type of traditional costume is the
national dress of Malaysia.

Samfu is the Cantonese term for an everyday attire
that was popular with the Chinese in South China,

Hong Kong and Singapore. Known as shanku in
Mandarin, the two-piece outfit comprises an upper
garment called a sam (meaning “shirt” or “blouse”)
and a pair of trousers referred to as fu. Some rural

people in China still wear the samfu today.

The cheongsam, also known as the qipao, is the
type of body-hugging dress of Manchu origin. It is a

high-necked, closefitting dress with the skirt slit
partway up the side. It was known as the mandarin

gown during the 1920s and 1930s, when it was
modernized by Chinese socialites and upper-class

women in Shanghai.

Dhoti is a dress for men. This dress made of white
cloth. It’s made of a sheet of white cloth long. The
cloth is wrapped around the waist and tied to the
groin and then hooked on the shoulder. The fabric

is decorated with small beads to look attractive.
There is also dhoti that is pale yellow or milky
yellow. This dress is widely worn by ceti group.

Sari is a common dress among women in South Asia,
especially the Indian subcontinent. Consist of a long
piece of unstitched cloth wrapped around the waist
worn over the shoulder exposing the abdomen. It is

traditionally worn in the countries of India,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
