HIGHLY IMMERSIVE PROGRAMME (HIP): A COMPILATION OF BEST PRACTICES
ACTIVITY: Fun Friday
TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Out-of-Class Activity
SCHOOL: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Simanggang, Sarawak
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills.
AIMS: 1. To improve language fluency.
2. To build confidence in using the English language.
3. To learn the English language in a fun way.
4. To maximise the use of the English language through
cooperative learning strategies.
TIME/DURATION: Every week
MATERIALS: APPENDIX 1: Sample Mark Sheet
APPENDIX 2: Pictures of the Activities
DESCRIPTION: This is a Language Scavenger Hunt activity or English
Explore Race activity that can be used for all levels. For
advanced students, the activity can be made more difficult
by adding more stations and giving students more
challenging tasks to complete. This activity is played
outside the school compound to attract more participation
and it involves the cooperation of other agencies such as
the Town/District Municipal Council as it may involve the
usage of public places.
STUDENT Students will be able to:
OUTCOMES:
i. speak in English to complete the tasks at each station.
ii. use English with peers confidently.
STEPS FOR 1. Students are divided into groups of 4.
IMPLEMENTATION: 2. Each group must select a leader.
3. The leader will receive and deliver all the instructions
for the Scavenger Hunt to the group members.
(Teachers need to develop the instructions for the
activity based on the type of activity selected.)
4. There are 5 stations and each group must complete all
the activities at the stations. The teachers will monitor
the activities at each station.
5. Each group will be given a mark sheet in which to
record their marks for all the completed activities.

6. The teacher-in-charge must observe whether the
language is fully used throughout the activity.
7. Each activity must be awarded marks upon
completion.
8. The group that scores the most marks is the winner.
9. The most active group will be awarded a prize.
10. The group that uses English the most in all the
activities will also be given a prize.

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Outreach

AIMS: 1. To enable students to write letters to pen-pals in
English.
2. To enrich students’ proficiency in reading and writing
informal letters.
3. To create a purpose for writing.
4. To encourage students to share views, opinions and
ideas in English.
TIME/DURATION: On-going activity
MATERIALS: APPENDIX 1: Picture of Compiled Letters
DESCRIPTION: This activity is a collaborative partnership between two
schools. Students from both the schools write to each
other in English on a regular basis and write about their
views, opinions and perspectives on how the English
activities that teachers have conducted for HIP have
helped to improve their proficiency and confidence in
English. In addition, students are able to develop their
writing skills in English and develop good relationships
with peers from another school.
STUDENT By the end of this activity, students will be able to:
OUTCOMES:
i. write informal messages to one another in English.
ii. practise reading and writing letters to pen-pals in
English.
iii. express their views, opinions and thoughts in written
form.
STEPS FOR 1. The Head of English Department from both the schools

2. List of students’ names and information is exchanged
and each student is assigned to a pen pal.
3. It is crucial that the teacher in-charge monitors the
exchanges to avoid controversial issues.
4. Students write to their friends /pen-pal by exchanging

conducted in their respective schools.
5. Students also participate in writing letters to pen-pals
via email or through social network applications such
as ‘WhatsApp’, ‘WeChat’ and ‘Telegram’ which is
closely monitored by the teachers.
6. Students are encouraged to share their experiences on
their interactions with their pen pals during English
lessons.
7. Students are to compile their letters in their portfolios.
