Whether it’s SpaceX launching rockets to try to get to Mars or the advancements in artificial intelligence with ChatGPT, it seems to be everywhere we turn. There’s a saying that technology has never changed this fast, yet it will never change this slow again. That sentiment can stir a variety of emotions. Excitement for some, frustration for others, and even fear at times. Change can be hard for all of us in various ways, yet overwhelmingly new technology has provided a better standard of living for human beings, new innovations, and remarkable products. The first iPhone was introduced in 2007, and 16 years later it’s a safe bet almost every household in America has some type of Apple product. That’s an incredible adoption curve considering how long technology adoption has traditionally taken even in the past. Agriculture is no exception to the rule. In fact, as Jeremy mentioned in previous articles, technology like ExactEmerge, ExactRate, Furrow Vision, and several others are leading innovation in the sensor, machine learning, and artificial intelligence spaces. It’s exciting for agriculture to be the pioneers and lead the way in innovation to support what you already do on a regular basis to improve productivity, efficiency, and production of the land. Automation is another great example. When we think of automation, our minds automatically go to things like self-driving cars that we see on the news and small “swarm farm” robots. As I’ve talked with many of you on a variety of visits, those types of machines may or may not make sense for your operation. However, automation can take many more forms. An exciting change in John Deere’s overall strategy is a shift towards what we’re calling Precision Upgrades that give you the ability to retrofit current equipment with new technology. For example, the ability to take your existing 8R tractor and install a kit that will make it autonomous to support your tillage operations or another function where you need extra manpower, yet not needing to purchase an additional fully-autonomous unit. Harvesting automation is just around the corner and is another great example of how Precision Upgrades can be a great way to step into technology. John Deere has introduced a kit that’s available on S700 combines for Cross Auger Shut-off. This kit provides an integrated solution to clearing out your unloading auger before shutting it off and not putting the strain on the components that a full unloading auger causes. We also know that this kit, along with the Adjustable Spout kit that we hope to have availability on soon, are required building blocks to future automation coming on S700 combines. These kits are a great way to take steps towards automation on current equipment and utilize technology to add efficiency in your operation. If you’re interested in either, we’d encourage you to ask your store’s Parts or Sales team about them as we have some coming before Fall Harvest. Another great new Precision Upgrade that John Deere has introduced, especially for those of you with terraces, is their new short snout kit for corn heads. These kits add shorter snouts for the outside rows of your corn head to help increase your turning radius while harvesting without knocking over corn. This has been a huge pain point in the past that we’re happy to be able to provide a solution for. We also have a good supply of these kits ordered for Fall, but with some limitations on supply we encourage you to call today! We’ll have several more Precision Upgrades to share with you in the very near future, and hope that this change in strategy is a great way for you to be able to implement current technology into your operations faster, and more economically, than ever before. This technology journey will be fun to be a part of the next several years as it continues to change how we all view our production cycles and challenge our preconceived notions on how we do things. Another wise quote we challenge our teams with regularly is “what got us here, won’t get us there” and encouraging our teams to Adapt Often. Taylor Fisher Taylor is from DeKalb, Missouri, and is currently studying Agricultural Business with a minor in Agricultural Dealership Management at Northwest Missouri State University. Taylor’s aspiration to intern for AVE-PLP is driven by her long-term goal of venturing into the field of Ag Dealership Management, viewing this internship as an opportunity to gain valuable experience and establish a foundation to potentially run a dealership in the future. During her internship, Taylor has had the opportunity to participate in significant presentations, introducing co-ops to the benefits of the Operations Center and how it can contribute to their growth and success. Along the way, Taylor has formed new friendships, forging personal connections with colleagues and fellow interns. Derek Freel Derek comes from Minneapolis, Kansas, and is currently attending Kansas State University majoring in Ag Business. Derek choose to intern with AVE-PLP to gain experience in sales, and new ag equipment. Through his time so far he has gained a lot of knowledge and met amazing individuals. Courtney Clinesmith Courtney comes from Cimarron, Kansas and currently is enrolled at Kansas State University majoring in Agriculture Business. Courtney specifically chose to intern with AVE-PLP because of the diverse, detailed experiences that she’d get the opportunity to participate in. Throughout her internship, Courtney has been pleasantly surprised by the immense value and opportunities it has offered. She has forged connections with incredible individuals, gaining invaluable skills and knowledge within the industry. In her free time she enjoys training and running half marathons, making memories with friends, traveling, and cooking. Dylan Cometti Dylan Cometti, comes from Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is currently a student at New Mexico State University majoring in Ag Business. Having focused primarily on pecan farming in his hometown, Dylan wanted to explore different types of farming with a company that showed passion in the industry. Dylan says his experience so far has been phenomenal. He has been tasked to work through many challenges with farmers trying to find better options in their operation which has lead to being able to propose solutions to farmers, experience new types of equipment and help the team at the store level. During his free time, Dylan enjoys engaging in activities such as fishing, golfing, and shooting shotguns. The PrairieLand Partners Clay Center store was the perfect location to host our first annual AVE- PLP LLC Intern Equipment Rodeo. The Equipment Rodeo consisted of multiple stations where our interns got seat time in equipment such as a tractor and baler, combine, skid steer, mini excavator, and compact utility tractors as well as received hands-on experience with technology. Our AgriVision Equipment and PrairieLand Partner leaders took time to share their knowledge about John Deere equipment with our interns! INTERNS IN ACTION Benjamin Timpe Benjamin Timpe, from Paola, Kansas, is currently a student at Kansas State University. He is pursuing a major in Agricultural Technology Management with a specialization in Precision Agriculture, along with a minor in Business. Benjamin says his internship experience thus far has been amazing. Throughout the summer, he has had the privilege of learning from knowledgeable employees at his location. Each day brings new discoveries, whether it’s acquiring knowledge about the intricacies of an 8R tractor or familiarizing himself with a z-trak mower. During his free time, he enjoys engaging in outdoor activities. Being an avid outdoorsman, he finds fulfillment in hunting and fishing, with bow hunting whitetail deer his favorite. Blake Gormley Blake Gormley, from Hiawatha, Kansas, is currently a student at Kansas State University. He was interested in the internship with AVEPLP to gain experience in sales with John Deere. Blake has enjoyed working with his mentor Riley, where he has gained valuable insights into the art of building connections with both new and existing customers. In his free time you can find Blake working on and riding on four-wheelers. Emily Bonilla Emily joins us from Wichita, Kansas, where she was attending Pratt Community College for rodeo before transferring to Fort Hays to pursue a major in Ag Business. Her decision to intern with AVE-PLP stems from her desire to expand her knowledge in the ag industry and knew PLP would be a great fit. In her free time, Emily finds joy in competing in local barrel racing at rodeos, and has recently found a new enjoyment in fishing. Ryan Benfer Ryan is from Longford, Kansas and is currently studying agronomy at Fort Hays State University. Ryan has always been interested in ag sales, so the opportunity to work in a dealership was something that really intrigued him. So far, the internship has been way more in depth than he thought it would be, he has been able to work on projects and interact with customers daily. Outside of work in his free time he enjoys helping his dad on the farm and fishing.

PrairieLandPartners.com PAGE 10 JULY - AUGUST 2023 AGRONOMIC THOUGHTS The 2023 wheat harvest has been an interesting one. For some it was over in May when the sprayer made a pass across the fields and for others they are still battling through the weeds to get the remaining wheat harvested. There were some decent dry land yields in spots that had a little rain in April, but for the most part there were below average yields on the fields that were harvested and not abandoned. Looks like there will have been enough wheat harvested that there will be enough seed wheat for next year’s crop. The drought that caused the difficult situation in the wheat is still hanging on through a large percentage of our territory but has greatly improved in other areas. Overall, the row crops are off to a good start this year. Planting conditions were a challenge early due to the dry start this spring and it created some issues with emergence due to planting depth or uneven emergence. We continue to hear that we are likely moving into a moderate to strong El Niño. This typically means that we should be in a wetter pattern and coming out of a strong La Niña. Not all El Niño’s are the same, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that we are in a wetter pattern for our 2023 row crops. I mentioned back in January that it might be a good idea to think about your fertility following a drought crop. If you are planning to go back to wheat with a field that was in wheat this year and you had a below average crop or no crop at all, there is a good chance that you will have a decent amount of carryover nitrogen when you plant back to wheat this fall. It has been my experience that a soil sample, especially a grid sample can pick this up and help you reduce your nitrogen needs for the upcoming crop. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about this. If you are interested in having grid samples pulled, let me know and I can line those up for you. For those that have wheat yield maps, take the time to “Analyze” them in Operations Center. This should provide valuable information about the most productive parts of the fields. The Operations Center is being continually updated and improved. Sometimes this causes some “hiccups” as it has a couple times recently, but overall, it has become a valuable tool for your farm operation.
