If so, what would that mean for your business? The world has gone through two periods of globalization in recent centuries. The first started in the late 19th century and ended with the onset of the First World War. The second period coincided with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rise of China as an economic superpower. There are now signs that the second period may be topping out, and likely reversing. No sector of the US economy has been more affected by globalization than the manufacturing sector. I remember in my early days out of college, when many components (castings, electrical components, brakes, etc) were moving to China and other east Asian countries. Many of these were produced at 20-50% of their cost in the US. Ocean freight was cheap, so often it was a 20-50% cost reduction for manufacturers. Roll the clock forward after the COVID supply challenges and couple some China and Russia geo-political headwinds, and US manufacturing is seeing a renaissance of sorts in recent years. Will the number of American factory jobs continue to trend higher if globalization goes in reverse? (see chart) I know for a fact that Deere and other manufacturers are starting to dual and triple source components currently made in China. They are bringing them back either in the US, or nearby in Mexico to make sure that supplies are more stable in years to come. This will come at a price to the US consumer. Do you want cheap or fast……most times you can’t have both. Bringing these jobs back to the US will be good for the US economy, but will undoubtedly bring some added inflation to the US economy, which likely means higher interest rates. We will save the longer term interest rate market for another discussion. What happens if globalization ends abruptly? The first era of globalization ended suddenly in 1914 with the geopolitical tragedy of WWI. It was then shaken up again in the economic tragedy of the Great Depression when countries enacted restrictive trade policies in a failing attempt to protect their domestic industries. A gradual reversal would be in our best interest today. As demonstrated most recently by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, food and energy prices soared, proving that unforeseen geopolitical events can have profound effects on the US economy. We cannot predict the future, but we can put plans in place to manage the affects on our businesses, positive or negative, that would be created by an abrupt slowing of globalization. Some geo-political disruptions can be good for agriculture livestock and commodity prices. Others, such as the Carter era grain embargo in January 1980, proved devastating. We are making plans in our business to manage both a major inflationary cycle that would be driven by further China – US and other geopolitical tensions. This potential cycle could provide fuel for price rallies in specific commodities, or it could throw us a curve ball that causes us all to hit the dirt for a couple years. Having a plan for both seems prudent at this time. The weather is starting to get a little warmer and we have received some moisture across our territory. Eastern side of the territory has had enough rain to create some issues getting field work done and the west side is still limping along with just enough moisture to keep the wheat moving along. Much of the territory will need more spring rain to fill our depleted profile for the upcoming crop season. The good news is the La Niña is fading and is predicted to move into an ENSO-neutral over the next couple months. ENSO-neutral can still be fairly dry but as we continue to move toward the El Niño phase we should be looking at better chances for precipitation. And if the old wives tale about fog is correct, we should get some of that moisture just about the time planting will start. You still have a little time to finish preparing your planter for spring planting and getting your seed meters checked out. One thing that sometimes doesn’t get thought about is having your Operation Center account and setup files prepared and ready to go when the planter is ready to roll. Also if you have equipment that currently isn’t set up to transmit information to and from the Operation Center, ask about our “Mobile MTG Box” to help with this. The Operation Center has continued to improve rapidly and if you haven’t spent any time in it lately, check it out. If you have any questions about this, your Salesman or Precision Ag person can help you with any questions you may have. If you haven’t set up an Operation Center account yet, now would be a good time to do so. Not only can it help you with keeping track of your trips across the field but also agronomic information and machine data. Much of the new technology that is coming will work through the Operation Center as well. There are weekly updates to the Operation Center as well as larger updates monthly and quarterly. On another note, fertilizer prices have dropped significantly this spring year over year. Even though crop prices have dropped some so have the input costs. I am hearing that some of the herbicide costs have come down as well and the availability has improved. Hopefully with a change in the weather pattern we will be looking at a profitable year. This includes crop types, products, varieties, and work. • Preview guidance tracks and prescriptions before sending to equipment. • Transfer planned work to equipment wirelessly to Gen 4 displays with software version 22-1 or later. • Monitor work progress from Operations Center mobile. • Analyze completed work in Operations Center web or mobile How to Create a Work Plan 1. After logging into John Deere Operations Center™, navigate to “Plan” 2. Click into “Work Planner”. 3. Select the production step you wish to create a Work Plan for 4. Click + Plan (Production Step). 5. Select your field(s); then, click Next. 6. Once you have selected your field(s), enter the information related for the specific production steps. 7. If guidance lines have been created for each field prior to the creation of the Work Plan, those guidance lines will automatically transfer over and be available for use in the Work Plan. As of the January 2023 update to Operations Center, AutoPath™ lines will automatically be included. 8. Select the respective machine(s) that the Work Plans should be sent to, as well as the implement the machine will be utilizing, from the drop-down menus. You can also choose an operator from the menu. If you have not already added the machine, implement, or operator, you may do so by clicking “Add Machine/ Implement/Operator” from the drop-down menu. After adding, you will be redirected to the Work Plan to continue. 9. Enter in the name or number of your Work Order and include any other important information in the Work Instructions.
