While I may not have had the appreciation at the time, those tough years in ag left a distinct impression on me. I have thought about this lately, as we have been dealing with drought in much of Kansas, Nebraska, and western Iowa. I know of a family that lost several hundred head of fat cattle recently in the heat and humidity. If you are in this situation, or you are in your 2nd or 3rd year of a drought, the future can seem bleak at times. When faced with situations like this, I often turn to a bible verse (Proverbs 3:5-6) that I memorized at a young age, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Today, I want to focus on the words “lean not on your own understanding”. Regardless of your religious beliefs, there is wisdom in this statement, but it is a real struggle to take responsibility while also being open to outside guidance and input. This verse explicitly calls us to trust first. To not lean on our own understanding involves recognizing the limitations of human wisdom, specifically our own. There is something humbling about this, but also freeing. Often in times of stress, we tend to close off others, and try to take on all the burdens ourselves. Trusting and submitting, we will be guided to the right path forward. I believe that we have been put in communities for a reason. There are people around us who are going through the same struggles, or those with a bit more grey hair who already experienced struggles like these once or twice already in their life. Discernment of what to do going forward, requires knowledge, which requires us seeking it out. If you find yourself in a tough spot, seek help, but seek it from the right people. Sometimes this means not conforming or following the pattern of the world around us. We can be transformed by renewing our mind. There is always a temptation to be “a self made man or woman”. My encouragement to you is to continue to work hard, but surround yourself with others who will lift you up, and help you discern the right path forward. This leads to being a life-long learner, and sometimes we have to go through challenging times in order to grow and develop. My old football coach said, when things don’t go our way, remember that every challenge – every adversity – contains within it the seeds of opportunity and growth. SAFETY – When it comes to fall harvest, there is a lot to be done in a short amount of time. Top that off with shorter days and colder weather ahead, and we all develop a sense of urgency, which can lead to safety challenges. When things break down and we lose time, we often take unsafe shortcuts. It’s easy to want to push on, even when we are tired, but we all have a limit. Please be safe this fall, and take time to step back and take a deep breath when you feel the urge to take risk. Your family needs you, and they will appreciate you slowing down just a bit, so that you can return safely to them at night. FAMILY – The only six letter word in which unconditional love, exasperation, and flat-out feuds can coexist. Sometimes, it is just complicated. But for all of the feuds and quarrels we may have at times, we can’t deny that there’s nothing like family. They will always be the source of love that we don’t have to earn. They are the place we can run to for help and comfort. In many cases, they are the ever-steady constant in this world of inevitable change. Family is a link to our past, and a bridge to our future. Family is one of life’s greatest blessings. PrairieLandPartners.com PAGE 10 SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2023 AGRONOMIC THOUGHTS Dryland corn harvest is progressing at a rapid rate due to nearly 67% of the state being in some level of drought. We are still waiting for the effects El Niño to kick in and bring more moisture to the central plains. We still need moisture to build sub-soil and fill ponds and lakes. The latest projections give a high probability that we could be looking at a strong EL Niño in the November to January time frame. Hopefully, we will get enough moisture to get the upcoming wheat crop planted and off to a good start. During the month of August, we had two PREP customer field days. The first was at our Ag Spray location. We used this site to do some in-house training as well as the customer field day. Our in-house training covered a lot of the newer technology that is coming with John Deere equipment. This gave us an opportunity to get technicians and parts personnel into driver seats and give them “stick time”. This is important for our customers that all employees know what is coming so that they can make sure that your equipment runs as efficiently as possible. We believe that the time spent, energy and cost of this training for our employees will be a long-term benefit for our customers. The customer field days covered combines, planters, and sprayers. Much of the conversation around the combine tent was a discussion on how best to handle many of the issues customers were dealing with in this year’s corn crop due to the heat and drought stress. Also covered at the combine was the not yet released Auto Track Turn Automation (ATTA) coming for combines as well as the Harvest Lab 3000 that can record protein and oil content just like yield is recorded. There is a software called PCT-Agcloud that works with Operation Center to analyze the protein and oil data from the HL3000. The planter class covered spacing consistency with the ExactEmerge planter including curve compensation, this is the ability of the planter to have the same spacing of the plants on the inside of a turn as well as the outside. Also, covered ExactRate and ExactShot liquid fertilizers systems as well as Precision Upgrade Kits. AutoPath and ATTA were covered at the planter station. Most of the new technology runs through the Operation Center and it is important to familiarize yourself with Operation Center if you aren’t already familiar with it. For the second year, we had the opportunity to see the See and Spray Ultimate sprayer and learn about all its capabilities. If you were able to attend last year as well as this year, you should have noticed the many improvements in this technology in just one year. These improvements will continue to come rapidly with all this technology. As with the planter the Operation Center is also a key component of the sprayer technology when using AutoPath. The PREP field day at the Lebo location had a couple of unique components. We had a side-by-side planter comparison with the ExactEmerge 1775NT and a 1790. As has been consistent in the comparisons that we have done over the last 4-5 years we saw an 8.4 bushel/acre yield advantage to the ExactEmerge planter. There was also a baler demonstration for those who wanted to stay for that at the conclusion of the PREP field day. If you have noticed anything throughout this article it has been technology and the Operation Center. We will continue to see this as technology is coming at us rapidly now. If an operator does this process 10 times a day, coupled with approximately 85.2 L (22.5 gal.) of solution savings with product reclaim one to two times per day, these two features together could save up to $600* a day. Reclaim expensive crop protection solutions between applications or required service in the field with product reclaim. Potentially reduce crop damage from residual chemical buildup. Performance Experience uniform distribution of product across the boom. Reduce nozzle clogging with increased agitation of product in solution system. Quality of application is critical. Avoid settling in the plumbing by keeping solution in motion with pressure recirculation, coupled with product reclaim and boom air purge. These features save precious time, product, and expense when rinsing and priming the boom while switching solutions.
