The Hickory County Farmers Market season begins Friday, April

Our Community

Helping Hands

In 2018, the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence or MCADSV, reported
that 33,758 requests for services for domestic or sexual violence went unmet due to lack of
resources available in the state. Of these services, 3,529 went unmet in the Southwest Region,
our region. Despite there being 11 established service providers in the region, 3,529
individuals went without help. Our region is the 3rd highest in the state for unmet needs, next to
Kansas City and St. Louis respectively. Clearly, we have an abuse problem that needs addressed.

In early 2019, a group of concerned citizens came together to address the growing problem
of violence and abuse in our community. We believed that together, we could make a
change and prevent violence through advocacy and education. Our motto is, “Many hands
make light work.”

We quickly held a community meeting announcing our intention to form a non-profit dedicated

to serving victims of abuse in Hickory County. Following the meeting, we began

The Horseradish King

Remembering a Legacy

If you are familiar with Hickory County, you no doubt have heard of, or even tried, Dick’s Wild
Root Horseradish, sold at most of the local stores in Hickory County and created by Weaubleau’s
Dick Thompson.

Born in Maryland in 1935, Dick ventured west in the mid-60’s
and, while in Iowa to visit his brother, he was introducted to his future bride, SuLane
Hess. Married in 1967, after running a service station in Maryland, they moved to
Flemington, MO in 1975, raising cattle, hogs, and small crops. In 1980, they bought
the old Weaubleau Tavern, remodeling it and opening it as The Rustic Inn, serving
the public stories, food, drinks, and live country music and dancing. For 30 years
thereafter, Dick owned a welding and metal
fabrication shop, Thompson Farm Products, manufacturing custom cattle and horse trailers,
big bale trailers, and making repairs for locals. If it could be imagined, Dick could build it.
He was an engineer with no formal training, and a perfectionist who insisted on quality.

In 2003, Dick started producing fresh-ground horseradish the way he remembered from
his childhood in Maryland, and Dick’s Wild Root Horseradish was born. Known as the
Horseradish King, his products are sold nationwide. Over the last 15 years, other nice
products have been developed and added in the store, like Horsey Pickles and Dick’s Dip
Mixes. Their products are shipped all over the United States.

The horseradish business is a complete family operation. Su and her merry helpers wash,

peel, grind, bottle, and label the horseradish in the store in Weaubleau, Missouri. Su also

handles the preparation, boxing, and shipping to customers all over the country. Su takes

care of all the operations, sourcing bottles, and accounting. Their oldest daughter, Deby,

sells product where she is in mid-Missouri at her business, Thompson Financial Partners,

in Fulton, Paris, and New Florence, and sells product at a few festivals. Their younger

daughter,

for splash landings. Sadly, Dick passed away in December of 2020
from Parkinson’s Disease. His horseradish
legacy lives on through his wife, Su, her

merry helpers, his two daughters, and his many

friends and customers who will enjoy his

product for years to come.

Canoeing the River

There are few activities as soothing and relaxing as a
canoe ride down the cool green waters of the Pomme
de Terre River. Canoes are quiet in the water which
makes it a soothing ride. It is possible to come upon
wild birds and ducks nesting near the river, deer
munching berries or cavorting in the water along the
river banks. For those who prefer a more stable ride,
you may want to use a john boat. However, for
maximum enjoyment, pack a picnic basket, gather your
fishing poles, and take a day off for fishing as you canoe
on the river.

35th Annual Rendezvous

May 1-2,
2021

The Pomme de Terre
Rendezvous is held annually
on the first weekend of May
at the Outlet Park below the
dam at Lake Pomme de Terre. It is a fun,
family-friendly event that provides visitors
with a glimpse of the life experienced by early
American pioneers and settlers in this area.
There is a pre-1840s rendezvous
encampment where participants wear
native or period clothing and stay in tents or
teepees which were common during this time.
Many of the encampment participants will
demonstrate pioneer skills as well as display
and sell many handmade goods and crafts –
including blacksmithing, weaving, pottery,
leatherworks, children’s games, and more.
Visitors may want to try their hand at archery shooting and throwing an atlatl or
tomahawk. Be sure to see the French artillery canon demonstration and check
out the black powder shooting competition, two of the favorite attractions for
many visitors.
Visitors may also enjoy live music, wonderful food, and various merchants of arts and crafts at Crafter’s Lane
along the scenic Pomme de Terre River.
An auction will be held on Saturday afternoon that includes many hand-made items donated by traders. You
never know what you might find up for bid. The proceeds of the auction go to support the Pomme de Terre
Rendezvous Scholarship Fund.
There is no admission fee for this event, but donations are certainly welcome.
Please go to the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous on Facebook to see and learn more about this great event.

So Much to See and Do at Pomme D

113 Miles of
Natural Beauty

While many man-made lakes seem to be lined with
unwelcoming rocks and boulders, Pomme de Terre Lake
offers visually welcoming, natural shorelines of lush
vegetation. The shorelines along our lake offer great casting
and trolling opportunities for many varieties of fish. With the
many expertly installed and clearly marked fish attractors,
fishing hot-spots are never crowded. Our shoreline is also
great for beaching your boat to take a walk, have a picnic,
or go swimming. Because Pomme de Terre Lake was built,
and is continually maintained by, the Army Corps of
Engineers, no homes or residences are built along the
shoreline. Also, a limited number of privately owned docks
are permitted on the lake and because of such vital measures
taken by the Army Corps, our lake remains one of the
cleanest bodies of water in the world-famous Ozarks.

7,800 Acres
of Open Water

Boating and having fun on the lake should be
entirely relaxing and enjoyable. If your usual
excursions to a lake are filling you with stress
because you’re
constantly trying
to avoid running
into other boats
and watercraft,
you’ll find Pomme
de Terre Lake an
overdue blessing
for your nerves.
With spacious,
calm waters, you
will be able to
focus entirely on
the fun that you
crave.

36 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide

De Terre

Recreational
Opportunities

Pomme de Terre Lake has long been called the
hidden gem of the Ozarks. Not only is it a
beautiful and clean lake, but it is also an exciting
and fun lake! Pomme de Terre is home to almost
eight thousand surface areas of swimming,
boating, fishing, skiing, and sailing fun. Whether
you want to fish for a mess of tasty crappie or
try your hand at catching the elusive Muskie,
you can do it all at Pomme de Terre Lake.

Is camping what you’re looking for? Pomme de Terre Lake has you covered. With hundreds of
sites between the U.S Corps of Engineers and the Missouri State Park campgrounds, you are
sure to find a place in the great outdoors. Pomme de Terre also has miles of hiking trails and
horseback trails if you want to get out and get active! No matter your interest, no matter your
form of recreation, Pomme de Terre is the place for you!

Enjoy a Day
at the Beach

The sandy beaches along Pomme de Terre Lake
are never over-crowded or polluted. Regular
maintenance ensures that our warm, sandy
swimming beaches are pleasant and inviting.
The U.S Army Corps of Engineers works
diligently to ensure this is one of the cleanest
lakes in the Ozarks.
