Light Up The Lake was a new event last year that featured
Chamber businesses displaying lights in a drive-thru event
at the Corps of Engineers’ Damsite Park during December.
The Chamber of Commerce worked hard to put this together in
a short amount of time, with over 30
businesses participating and 20 non-profit
organizations working the gate. Admission was by donation and the group that
worked the gate for the night split the profits with the Chamber of Commerce.

Thank you to all the businesses and non-profits who participated
in any way, and/or donated to this successful event!

boating Water Safety at the Lake
Let’s keep 2022 SAFE
Keep Your Safety in Mind!

POMME DE TERRE LAKE, Mo. – In an effort to decrease accidents relating to water-based
recreation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pomme de Terre Lake, urges our visitors to be
safe and use good judgment while
enjoying activities at the lake.

Each year, approximately 6,000
people drown in the United States,
making drowning the SECOND
leading cause of accidental deaths
for people 15-44 years of age.
Surprisingly, two-thirds of the people who
drown never intended to be in the water!

Statistics show that 96 percent of those

who drown at Corps lakes may have

survived if they were wearing a life jacket.

Secondly, more than half of all incidents Button Cove
involve alcohol. Photo submitted by Erin Cookston

While going to the lake is a fun experience,

remember that it comes with responsibilities. In order to have a fun and memorable trip on the water

you need to be safe and do this by being prepared for anything that could happen.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that there are five common factors that contribute to many boating
accidents every year. These factors include alcohol use, inattention, reckless operation, passenger
behavior and operator inexperience. Boaters are urged to manage these risk factors and follow
these rules to keep them and those around them safe:

Alcohol and water don't mix
Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in
nearly 20 percent of all boating accidents.
Just one beer can impair balance, vision,
judgment, and reaction time. Research shows
that four hours of boating produces fatigue that
simulates drunkenness. Boating fatigue
combined with alcohol consumption intensifies
the effects of both and increases accident risks.

Photo submitted by Diane Dreyer Boaters should take appropriate safety
classes, be familiar with governing state laws
12 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide and have proper safety equipment onboard
before boating. Seventy percent of reported
fatalities occurred on boats where the operator
had not received boating safety instruction,

according to USCG statistics. Wear a life jacket – don’t boating
just carry one on board. Make sure it is U.S. Coast
Guard approved and appropriately sized. Don't
overload the boat (consider boat size, the number of
passengers, and extra equipment before loading).
Check your boat for all required safety equipment.
Carry a set of navigational charts. Check the weather
forecast. File a float plan with family or friends who are
not on the vessel.

Swimming and Knowing Your Limits

At Army Corps of Engineers sites, swimming in

non-designated areas is the highest (47%) cause for Coming into the Harbor Marina.
all water-related fatalities nationwide. Of all Photo submitted by Keri Dalton
swimming-related fatalities, 87 percent of those were

in non-designated swimming areas. Don't take chances by over-estimating swimming skills, and

swim only in designated areas. Watch your children at all times when around the water. It takes

an average of 20 seconds for a child to drown. Never dive into lakes and rivers. Never rely on

toys such as inner tubes and water wings to stay afloat. Reach or throw a flotation device to help

someone in trouble. Don't go in the water! Never swim alone.

Water Safety, Everyone’s Responsibility
Water safety must be a top priority for everyone using
Pomme de Terre Lake this summer. An estimated 1.3
million people visit Pomme de Terre Lake annually.
Statistics show that most drownings occur during peak
visitation, on weekends during the months of April
through September. Fifty percent of all incidents occur
between June and July when the projects are the
busiest and water temperatures are warmest. Males
constitute 89 percent of all Corps water related fatalities.

We ask that you please wear your life jacket, make sure any person accompanying you is wearing their
life jacket, and boat safely using good judgement. A little time spent now on these details will go a long
way towards making 2022 a wonderful summer to remember.

fishing Excellent Fishing at Pomme

Pomme de Terre lake is known for its excellent fishing. Good stringers of crappie, bass,
white bass, bluegill, catfish, and walleye are commonly taken from the lake. Pomme de
Terre lake is also noted for its muskie fishing. Muskellunge have been stocked in the
lake regularly since 1966 and dedicated fisherman have an opportunity to catch
trophy-sized muskie. Fishing on Pomme de Terre Lake is regulated by the Missouri
Wildlife Code and enforced by the Missouri Department of Conservation. It is the responsibility of the fisherman to
ensue that they are in compliance with all rules and regulations, whether they are fishing in the lake or the river.

A special program at Pomme de Terre Lake is the fish habitat program. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers works
closely with the Missouri Department of Conservation to enhance and improve fish habitat on the lake by placing
brush piles at various locations around the lake. These brush piles provide various fish species with structures for
loafing and a place to escape from predators. A map showing the fish habitat locations is available at the Corps of
Engineers’ Project Office.

There are also bank fishing opportunities for anglers who do not have a boat in the form of fishing docks. There are two
sets of fishing docks on the lake; Bolivar Landing and below the Project Office on the east side of the dam. Also there is
a fishing area available below the dam where anglers can fish in the stilling basin from a fenced concrete sidewalk area.

These areas are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
to be accessible to those who have mobility impairments and may
not be able to fish at other locations.

Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary has become a much needed
service in the rescue world. We are a 501c3 non profit and licensed
shelter in the state of Missouri. Allowing senior dogs ages 12+ the option
of a happily ever after when otherwise there would be no future for them.
The neglected, abused, or abandoned no longer have to suffer. Once the
seniors come to the sanctuary, they are home. They never have to leave
and they stay until they pass into peace. Every single senior receives full
veterinary care, medications, and love! They are never alone and never
kenneled. It is a true retirement community.
Especially during this last year, our society has faced so many hardships. Here
at the sanctuary we have strived to be a guiding light of hope and peace even
when everything has felt so dark. In 2021 our focus was on peace. What you
focus on becomes your reality and you can see in these beautiful faces that
they found “home.”

Valerie, along with all of our staff, are ever so thankful for
the continued support of our seniors. When all options
are exhausted, we have had so very many of our loyal
supporters step up and be the bridge to hope. Love can
heal a magnitude of hurts and when we band together it
has been proven what amazing things can be
accomplished. Much can be done when like-minded hearts help those that are hurting.

Hickory County Library community
Greetings from the Hickory County Library.

We are located at 18376 New Hermitage
Drive. The Library offers 24/7 free wi-fi, four
week checkouts on books and audio books,
DVDs, and magazine checkouts. We
recently added a new wireless network that
will ask for agreement of service. We
additionally offer six wireless hot spots
available for checkout.

The Library also offers interlibrary loan services. This means that if this location does not hold an item
in our collection, we can borrow an item from anywhere in the United States OR Canada for FREE.
We are also a part of the MoLib2Go e-book and digital media consortium. The Library added an
additional internet database, HOOPLA. This service not only allows for book checkouts, but there are
magazines and movie streaming as well. You can download and enjoy electronic materials (ebooks,
magazines, audios, and movies) on your mobile device or tablet for FREE! We offer a subscription to
AncestryPlus, if you are interested in family history. Several community groups meet at the Library, such as
the Historical Society, Friends of the Library, Hickory County Soccer Club, and more. We host many
independent classes, technology and adult computer classes. The Library hosts a monthly book club and has
a very active Friends of the Library group.

The Library also added Little Sharing Libraries to our services. Currently, there are Little Sharing Libraries in
Hermitage, Cross Timbers, Weaubleau, and Wheatland, adding Preston, Pittsburg, and Galmey soon.

A little bit of history for you, the Library had an official district within the county in 1949. We have been in three
locations since that inception. Previously, we were
located at the now Jenkins Accounting and Tax office,
then moved to what is now the Hermitage Pharmacy,
before finally settling here on New Hermitage Drive.
Additionally, our library had many facets over the years.
Before unifying with Southwest Regional in the early
1900s, each town within Hickory County had their own
library and literary discussion groups. You can read more
on that in the vintage articles online through the Missouri

Community Action Resource Education Services

Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. is a 501c3 organization created in 2011 and is committed to improving people's quality of life
by establishing and maintaining an independent food pantry for Hickory County residents. Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. is
totally manned by a volunteer Board of Directors and Volunteers.

The Food Pantry is located in Wheatland, MO and, in September of 2013, established a
satellite distribution facility in Weaubleau, MO to make it easier for people on the west
end of Hickory County to receive food.

The main source of the Food Pantry funding comes from the Thrift Store they opened in
March 2013 in Hermitage, MO. The Thrift Store is made possible by clothing donations

from the community. It is staffed by volunteers that sort
and stock the store. All proceeds from the sales go to the
food pantry, which was a huge help as 2021 was a trying year for everyone as there was
a rise of families in need.

Hickory County is a devoted community of individuals, local
businesses, schools, and organizations that all help to
support Hickory County C.A.R.E.S.

One night a year, the Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. staff works
the gate at Lucas Oil Speedway’s annual Ozark Food Harvest Food Drive Night where race fans
bring four non-perishable food items and receive a free admission ticket. This brings in an average
of 6,000 to 7,000 lbs. of food which is distributed to Hickory County
C.A.R.E.S. and surrounding counties.

Another way Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. raises money to help feed
our community is by working a 50/50 at Lucas Oil Speedway.

One of the programs that Hickory
County C.A.R.E.S. is proud of is
our Senior Box Program, which is
getting nutritious food to those age
60 and older and is a priority to Hickory County C.A.R.E.S.

All of this could not be accomplished without the help of Volunteers. It doesn't take a big

commitment to make a big impact! Your time makes a difference in the lives of your neighbors

struggling with hunger. We are

always looking for volunteers at Food Pantry

Village How Settlers

Village Came Alive
Wheatland Settlers Village is a collection of authentic log buildings. In 1992, the construction of this
village began through the cooperation of a group of volunteers and the Hickory County Economic
Development Council, Inc., a non-profit organization.

Thirteen authentic log buildings were located in Hickory County, MO, and the surrounding area.
These buildings were uncovered and individual logs were labeled for ease in the re-assembly
process. Next, the log structures were disassembled and moved to the Wheatland town square.
There, using the log labels and computerized drawings, they were carefully re-assembled.

While the re-assembly process may sound easy, it requires not only putting the logs together, but
also re-chinking at the exterior and interior spaces between the logs, re-roofing, and re-assembling
the interior parts of the building.

entertainment 36 th Annual Rendezvous
May 7-8 2022

The Pomme de Terre Rendezvous is held annually on the
first weekend of May at the Outlet Park below the dam at
Lake Pomme de Terre. It is a fun, family-friendly event that
provides visitors with a glimpse of the life experienced by
early American pioneers and settlers in this area.

There is a pre-1840s rendezvous encampment where
participants wear native or period clothing and stay in
tents or teepees, which were common during this time.
Many of the encampment participants will demonstrate
pioneer skills as well as display and sell many handmade
goods and crafts – including blacksmithing, weaving,
pottery, leatherworks, children’s games, and more.

Visitors may want to try their hand at archery shooting
and throwing an atlatl or tomahawk. Be sure to see the
French artillery canon demonstration and check out the
black powder shooting competition, two of the favorite
attractions for many visitors.

Visitors may also enjoy live music,
wonderful food, and various merchants
of arts and crafts at Crafter’s Lane along
the scenic Pomme de Terre River.

An auction will be held on Saturday
afternoon that includes many
hand-made items donated by traders.
You never know what you might find up
for bid. Proceeds of the auction go to
support the Pomme de Terre
Rendezvous Scholarship Fund.

There is no admission fee for this
event, but donations are certainly
welcome.

Please go to the Pomme de Terre

and learn more about this great event.
