8 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide It isn’t every day a high school turns 100, but that is exactly what happened for Hermitage High School this past school year after providing a century of excellence in education. Hermitage School as a whole got its start in 1887 as a two-story brick building near what used to be Hermitage Floral Shop educating elementary-aged children. To further their education at the high school level, students had to travel out of the county. However, in 1923, a high school curriculum was added with the first senior class graduating in May of 1924. Thus, making Hermitage High School 100 years old. Don and Kathy Jenkins Ginnings, both 1963 graduates, shared that when the highway came through in 1938, the original school building was demolished and rebuilt similarly at the east end of Polk Street. There were three rooms upstairs, with one more classroom plus a kitchen, bathroom, and coal room in the basement. A gymnasium (what is now the cafeteria) was soon added through the Work Projects Administration (WPA) federal program. This program supplied paid jobs to help build up public infrastructures like schools. Then, in the summer of 1964, the elementary brick building was added as well as an exterior Industrial Arts shop. In the early 90s, the street in front of the school was dead-ended, so the high school building as it is now known could be built and added to the original building and connected to the ag shop. This made for one large walk-through building from elementary through high school. Future additions included a new, larger gymnasium, middle school wing, agriculture building, greenhouse, new locker rooms, an elementary gymnasium, a new music room, and most recently, the Early Learning Center. Land acquisitions near the school were made to provide an alternative school, preschool and after-school care buildings, a bus barn, and additional parking. In addition to bond issues, grant funding helped provide for the expansion of the initial daycare, preschool, and after-school and summer school programs. Besides the building structures, academic and athletic programs have evolved through the last century. Gerda Fitts was instrumental in providing satellite evening college classes through Wentworth Junior College at Hermitage High School that evolved into a partnership in providing college and dual credit opportunities for students of all ages. Through 21st Century Grants, a night school was created for persons who wanted to achieve a diploma and still continues today. The Voyages Travel Program and Missouri As A Classroom offered educational travel experiences for many students. Former Superintendent Shelly Aubuchon saw an interest in agriculture and knew the leadership prospects and appeal it would have for students who might not be engaged with other activities. Thus, was added agricultural education and the National FFA Organization. On the athletic side, golf, cross 1952 Twirlers Junior Melissa Trajano of Coach Jim Wilson’s fishing class in 1999 - on Lake PdT!
www.pommedeterrechamber.com 9 country, and track and field all became options for students. Some of the most recent extracurricular offerings (new and revitalized) include theatre and drama, chess club, and eSports. 2024 senior Izzy Sabala said, “I think it means more to our seniors graduating on the 100th anniversary.” Sabala started with Hermitage Schools in the daycare and then preschool, so Hermitage R-IV has been a part of her entire life. “It means a lot to be a part of the 100th anniversary of this school. It’s the school I literally grew up in and where I found amazing friends for life. Even the teachers and staff became a part of my family, because they took me in as their own.” One such staff member is library aide Jackie Liberty. Liberty shared, “It really doesn't seem like it, but I've been here for 16 years. My four children all graduated from Hermitage after being here since kindergarten. And now my oldest daughter is employed at Hermitage and two of my grandsons attend our Hornet preschool. I did not graduate from HHS, but my husband and children did. You could definitely say Hermitage School has been a big part of my family's lives, and I am 100 percent proud to be a Hornet!” Many families have seen multiple generations graduate from Hermitage, including local business owner Terry Turner, a 1969 alumnus. Turner’s mother, Geraldine Stroud Turner, graduated in 1936, his three sons graduated in 1991, 1996 and 2001, and now two of his grandsons are current students in the classes of 2025 and 2029. Many wonderful memories have been made in the last 100 years for students, staff, and families. Current Superintendent Dr. Justin Yates said, “Reaching the 100-year milestone and celebrating a century of excellence underscores the lasting impact our school has had on the community and the educational experiences of our students.” Memories are often captured through pictures and text in the Hornet yearbook. The Business Communications class worked tirelessly this school year to go through every available yearbook to pull highlights from each decade to put on display during the 100-Year Celebration in February. Some of those highlights are listed to the right.

KY3 The Place and Weather School Tour KY3’s The Place and the Weather School came to Hickory County in March of 2023. www.pommedeterrechamber.com 25 HickoryCounty C.A.R.E.S. (Community Action Resource Education Services) is a 501c3 organization created in 2011 and is committed to improving people's quality of life by establishing and maintaining an independent food pantry for Hickory County residents. Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. is totally manned by a volunteer Board of Directors and Volunteers. The main source of the Food Pantry funding comes from the Thrift Store they opened in March, 2013, in Hermitage, Missouri. The Thrift Store is made possible by clothing donations from the community, and staffed by volunteers that sort and stock the store. All proceeds from the sales go to the food pantry and stay in Hickory County. This was a huge help in 2022, a trying year for everyone as again there was a rise of families in need. 2022 also brought the need to do repairs to the Thrift Store. While visiting the Thrift Store one day, Mr. and Mrs. Pickering saw this need and wrote Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. a check to cover the repairs. We also can’t forget our devoted community that helps support us...individuals, local businesses, schools, and organizations. Without their donations, Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. would not be able to purchase food to help their community. One night a year, the Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. volunteers staff the gate at Lucas Oil Speedway’s annual Ozark Food Harvest Food Drive Night. Race fans bring four non-perishable food items and receive a free admission ticket. The donated items on this night usually average 6,000 to 7,000 lbs. of food that is distributed to surrounding counties, including Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. In 2021, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the pantry needed to make major changes to the way they served their patrons. The Pickering family saw this need and donated the money to help Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. build an addition to the pantry. The covered drive thru garage has been a blessing for the patrons as well as the volunteers. This enables patrons to stay in their vehicle and pull in the drive thru, and keeps Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. volunteers safe as they load the groceries. In 2022, after 11 years of weekly use, the pantry needed repairs and updating. Failing freezers also needed replacing, along with numerous other items. The pantry was blessed to receive a grant through Ozark Food Harvest, and once again the Pickering family came to their aid upon hearing their need. These blessings could not have come at a better time. One of the priority programs Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. is proud of is the Senior Box Program, which is getting nutritious food to those age 60 and older. Additionally, in 2022 they were able to start receiving food and paper goods through Convoy of Hope. This, along with their twice a month deliveries from Ozark Food Harvest, helps bring balanced meals to Hickory County residents and their families. All of this could not be accomplished without the help of volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers at our Food Pantry and Thrift Store. It doesn't take a big commitment to make a big impact! Your time makes a difference in the lives of your neighbors struggling with hunger. If you or anyone you know are ever in need of help from us, we are here. No matter whether it is a few months or longer, everyone needs a hand up sometimes. 22469 US Highway 54 Hermitage, MO 65668 417-242-0019 Follow us on FB @ Hickory County CARES Thrift Store 18613 Main Street Wheatland, MO 65779 417-459-9639 Follow us on FB @ Hickory County C.A.R.E.S. 26 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide The Pomme de Terre Rendezvous is held annually on the first weekend of May at the Outlet Park below the dam at Lake Pomme de Terre. It is a fun, family-friendly event that provides visitors with a glimpse of the life experienced by early American pioneers and settlers in this area. There is a pre-1840s rendezvous encampment where participants wear native or period clothing and stay in tents or teepees, which were common during this time. Many of the encampment participants will demonstrate pioneer skills as well as display and sell many handmade goods and crafts – including blacksmithing, weaving, pottery, leatherworks, children’s games, and more. Visitors may want to try their hand at archery shooting and throwing an atlatl or tomahawk. Be sure to see the French artillery canon demonstration and check out the black powder shooting competition, two of the favorite attractions for many visitors. Visitors may also enjoy live music, wonderful food, and various merchants of arts and crafts at Crafter’s Lane along the scenic Pomme de Terre River. An auction will be held on Saturday afternoon that includes many hand-made items donated by traders. You never know what you might find up for bid. Proceeds of the auction go to support the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous Scholarship Fund. There is no admission fee for this event, but donations are certainly welcome. Please go to the Pomme de Terre Rendezvous page on Facebook to see and learn more about this great event.

You’ll see participants in native and period dress demonstrating a wide variety of colonial skills. Yearly activities include a black-powder shooting competition, many craft booths, wonderful food and great entertainment for everyone to enjoy. 32 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide Wheatland Settlers Village is a collection of authentic log buildings. In 1992, the construction of this village began through the cooperation of a group of volunteers and the Hickory County Economic Development Council, Inc., a non-profit organization. Thirteen authentic log buildings were located in Hickory County, MO, and the surrounding area. These buildings were uncovered and individual logs were labeled for ease in the re-assembly process. Next, the log structures weredisassembled and moved to the Wheatland town square. There, using the log labels and computerized drawings, they were carefully re-assembled. While the re-assembly process may sound easy, it requires not only putting the logs together, but also re-chinking at the exterior and interior spaces between the logs, re-roofing, and re-assembling the interior parts of the building. Settlers Village also has a replica stagecoach relay station. This relay station is a replica of a frontier Butterfield Overland Mail station. It was built from a photograph of an original relay station using logs from a building beyond restoration. The Butterfield Overland Mail operated from 1858 to 1860, running from Tipton, MO, through Wheatland, MO, to San Francisco, CA, a route of 2,790 miles. By 1995, the Settlers Village really started taking shape and now includes several houses, barns, corn cribs, a blacksmith shop, two guest cabins, and the mail relay station. All buildings were graciously donated to the Settlers Village. The Settlers Village with the relay station now stands as a proud representative of our local and national heritage - particularly our rural heritage. It gives us visible cause to appreciate our ancestors who, working with a broadax, crosscut saw, and other hand tools, created these buildings. It gives us a place where we can reflect on the indomitable spirit of our pioneers - the same spirit we need to face challenges in today’s world. You are able to experience the Settlers Village now due to the efforts of about 18 people who took time to recognize the worth of these structures sitting in fields or old home sites. In the process of reclaiming these log buildings, these volunteers encountered much work, finding a great amount of satisfaction. They built friendships as they rebuilt these log buildings, much as our ancestors did as they worked together.

www.pommedeterrechamber.com 35 The Hickory County Health Department, in partnership with Friends of Hickory County Health Department and Hickory County Community Wellness Foundation, has launched fundraising efforts to build a splash pad on the grounds of the Health Department. This splash pad will be free and open to the public during the summer months. It’s very important to us that kids have access to healthy outdoor activities here in our own community. If you are interested in joining our efforts please contact the Health Department or go to https://app.autobooks.co/pay/friends-of-hickory-county-health-department. We continue to promote life jacket use and were fortunate to provide the area with an additional life jacket loaner station at Outlet Park Boat Ramp this past summer. For more information on water safety, go to http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/. The Health Department offers Silver Sneakers exercise classes for individuals with Medicare coverage. Morning and afternoon classes are available Monday through Friday. The gym is also available to Hickory County residents for a monthly fee of $24.00. There is a one time $20.00 charge for a key fob that allows the patron to access the gym 24/7. In 2023, we added counseling services to the Health Department. A licensed professional counselor is available for appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. An income based sliding fee program is available for uninsured patients who qualify, and applications are available at the Health Department. Currently, only Medicaid, Medicare, sliding fee qualified patients, and self-pay patients will be accepted for treatment. The Hickory County Health Department provides a wide range of women’s health services to Hickory County residents. All services are free until age 19 and then available at low cost. For women under age 17, birth control medications are free and then offered at a reduced cost after that. The Show Me Healthy Women and Wise Woman programs are available to women ages 35-64 that meet the income guidelines and do not have insurance to cover breast and cervical screenings. Wise Woman services include annual screenings that measure blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL, blood glucose, and height and weight for body mass index (BMI). Participants are offered coaching sessions to help set realistic goals aimed at making lifestyle changes that will improve heart health. For women who complete four coaching sessions, the Health Department will provide membership at the gym and $25.00 Farmer’s Market Food Vouchers for three months to help them continue the healthy lifestyle changes they have made. The Health Department provides a wide variety of services and looks forward to adding more programs to benefit our county residents as the opportunities arise. 38 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide Pomme de Terre has had its share of “ups and downs” since construction was completed in 1961. Pomme de Terre works together with Melvern, Pomona, and Hillsdale Lakes in Kansas, and Stockton & Harry S Truman Lakes in Missouri to provide Flood Control and Hydro-Electric Generation at Stockton and Harry S Truman Reservoirs. The Water Control Manual provides the basic formula for how the lake is operated in conjunction with others to provide the various authorized purposes. It seems like the Corps of Engineers should have the ultimate control of lake levels, however the amount and timing of precipitation events can quickly overwhelm the best of plans. When rains are heavy and fast, creating heavy run off into the tributaries, the lake rises rapidly and holds back the flood waters from contributing to flood conditions downstream. Once the downstream flooding recedes, the stored flood waters are released in a controlled manner to evacuate the excess water through the system and ultimately to the Missouri River. While it may seem inconvenient at times, the ups and downs of the lake are a part of the control system for the Osage River Basin, and Pomme de Terre Lake is performing as designed in this respect. 40 Pomme de Terre Lake Area Vacation Guide There are many aspects of the areas around Pomme de Terre Lake to enjoy...fishing, boating, swimming, hunting, camping, and simply appreciating the natural beauty of the area. Each activity comes with its benefits and responsibilities, from ensuring that one does not damage the natural flora by cutting trees or driving through fields, to avoiding blocking access points and preventing others from being able to enjoy the area. Each year many areas, facilities, signs, gates, and fields are damaged by individuals who simply either do not consider the impacts or are unconcerned with damage to the area. Gates and barriers are in place to prevent unauthorized vehicles from accessing fields or trails and causing damage or disrupting other enjoyment of the area. The repairs and replacements of damaged facilities and areas take away funding that could otherwise be used to enhance and improve opportunities for everyone to enjoy the area. Please respect the gates, signs, natural vegetation, and fields that are a part of the areas of Pomme de Terre Lake to ensure the access and enjoyment for future users. www.pommedeterrechamber.com 41 I have been vacationing at Lake Pomme de Terre since I was a boy and shortly after the lake first opened, camping, fishing and boating with my father and brother. We would camp in what is now the Nemo Landing campground and from there boat and fish on the lake. After I graduated...I moved to Phoenix, got married and had a family. Over the years we would alternate our summer vacations mostly between San Diego and Lake Pomme de Terre. When we are at the lake we stay at my Mother-in-Law’s lake house just a couple of blocks south of the Triangle and now mostly boat (pulling a tube), swim, watch the races at Lucas Oil Speedway, enjoy the fireworks over the Dam, and (more recently) enjoy a few meals at Pomme de Ritas, MeMaws, and the Home Town Diner. I enjoy the Hermitage Swim Beach just as much as the Coronado beach in San Diego. I also come back each November with my son and stay at the lake and go deer hunting on my property.
