LU LINGO &
WORDS TO KNOW

Blackboard: Submit assignments, check your current semester gpa, view syllabi, submit evaluations, and
see announcements from your professors.

Cards: Short for Cardinals.

D Hall: Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall. That extra syllable was just too much for us.

Drop Day: You’re taking a class, and it’s not for you. (We’ve been there!) This is the last day you can drop
that class from your schedule. Be choosy when registering for class – you only get 6 opportunities to drop
classes at Lamar.

LEA: Lamar Electronic Account. This is your username and email address for everything online except Self-
Serv Banner, where you log in with your L-Number and PIN.

L-Number: Your LU student identification number. Memorize it. You’ll need it for lots of things!

LUConnect: The portal to all of LU’s online tools, like Blackboard, Self-Serv Banner, OrgSync, and more.

Non-Payment Purge Day: The day when students who haven’t paid their tuition get dropped from classes.
It’s also the day when spots open up in closed classes, and you might snag a seat if you’re fast enough!

Peck ‘Em: We’re Cardinals, and birds peck, so we Peck ‘Em! at sporting events or just for funsies. Peck ‘Em,
Cards!

The Quad: The central outdoor area of campus. Lots of places to relax, people to see, and sunshine to
enjoy.

Queue: Pronounced “Q”. When you print, your pages are held in
a queue. You must go to the designated computer in the Library
and log in to release and print them.

RA: Resident Assistant. Fellow students who help run the residence
halls. When you lock yourself out, or just need a friend, your RA is
there!

The Reaud: Pronounced “ree-ode.” The Reaud Administration
Building is the home of the Honors College and has offices for LU
administration.

The Rec: Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center. It’s a good
place to chill, study, or work out.

Self-Serv Banner: Online platform for your “official business” at LU.
Make payments, register for classes, see your GPA, and more!

The Set: Setzer Student Center. It’s basically the hub of campus,
with good food! Plenty of places to relax and mingle with your
friends.

Swipe: With a meal plan, you swipe your LU ID to pay for your

food. The swipe automatically deducts meals or declining dollars

from your meal plan.

MORE INSIDER TIPS

THINGS TO DO NOW
 Explore campus and find your classes.
 Don’t get a ticket - get your parking pass! Learn how at lamar.edu/parking.
 Get a planner, print your class syllabi, and mark the dates for assignments and tests.
 Get your supplies ready: 3-ring notebook, laptop, spirals, and plenty of your preferred pens and

pencils. Different-colored pens are great for notetaking!
 Things to always have with you: sunglasses, mini-umbrella, mini-stapler (yes, really), your Lamar ID,

reusable water bottle.

IN CLASS
 8 am classes are not for the faint-hearted! Set your alarm and go to bed on time!
 Get lots of Scantrons! (Buy in bulk online to save $.)
 Ask professors before you record them. (Some don’t allow it.)
 Go to class! You’re paying for it, and you can’t just show up the test day and expect an A in the

class. (We speak from experience!)
 Don't skip class and then ask for notes from those who do go to class. (It’s not a great way to start

friendships!)

ON CAMPUS
 Pick up a University Press each week for event lists and coupons.
 There is always parking at the Montagne Center. It’s not that far, and walking is good for you!

IN THE RESIDENCE HALLS
 In the first three days after move-in, establish suite rules with your roommate.
 Make an alternating chore chart to always know whose turn it is to take out the trash, buy toilet

paper, sweep, etc.
 Always clean up after yourself, and don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink!

STUDY TIME
 Set up major time each week to study and do homework. This isn’t high school: things will be harder,

and assignments will require more time than you think.

WHERE CAN I FIND SOMEPLACE QUIET?
Need some quiet time? We all do! These are our top picks for studying, relaxing, and meditating. Just
remember to keep it down!
Indoors (and Air-Conditioned!): Library—Rec Center lounges—Setzer Student Center—Lounges in
Cherry, FCS, and Communication
Outdoors: The Quad under the trees – the Gazebo between Maes and Education – the shaded
benches between Hayes and HHPA - the pond at the John Gray Center (say hi to the ducks!) – the
courtyard by the Science Auditorium – Cardinal Park in front of Monroe Hall – the patio at the Rec – the
veranda at the Set (with bonus rocking chairs!)
