THE IMPACT OF LUNG DISEASE

• Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of both men and women in the United States.
• COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America.
• Asthma is the number one chronic disease of children.
• Big tobacco spends billions of dollars each year to lure kids to smoke.

At the American Lung Association, we believe healthy lungs and healthy air are worth fighting for. We
provide support and education for those living with asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), and fighting threats to lung health such as tobacco, air pollution and more.

Our vision is simple, but expansive: a world free of lung disease.

OUR WORK

Fighting Lung Disease
Lung disease is the number three killer in the United States, and more than 33 million people
suffer from chronic lung disease. Lung disease causes millions of days lost at school and work
and costs the United States billions of dollars in healthcare costs. We are fighting lung disease
with research, education and advocacy at the local, state and national level.

Fighting Childhood Asthma
Affecting more than 7 million children, asthma is a leading chronic illness among American kids.
In addition to providing vital research support, the American Lung Association facilitates asthma-
care partnerships and provides training, tools and other resources to educate school personnel,
healthcare providers, and families to improve asthma care for children.

Fighting Lung Cancer
The American Lung Association funds vital lung cancer research and educates millions about lung
cancer each year. Most recently, one of our researchers identified a major oncogene that causes
the development of lung cancer and that a drug, approved to treat arthritis may also function in
inhibiting the growth of tumor cells. We fight lung cancer every day by helping people quit
smoking, fighting for clean air and researching for cures.

Fighting for Clean Air
We analyze data from official air quality monitors to compile our State of the Air report. The more
you learn about the air you breathe, the more you can protect your health and take steps to make
our air cleaner and healthier. The American Lung Association also fights for policies that improve
lung health, reduce tobacco use and clean up air pollution. Our public policy positions on lung
health and other issues direct our public policy and advocacy efforts.
