YEO Network Overview
Making Cents’ YEO Network is a community of professionals preparing youth to learn, earn and thrive in a changing world
of work. The Network’s goal is to improve members’ ability to design, develop, fund, and implement evidence-based,
innovative, and scalable youth economic opportunities programs that improve outcomes for young people globally. To
achieve this goal, the YEO Network facilitates knowledge exchange, collaboration, and action among diverse stakeholders
working to expand youth economic opportunities. Through its annual GYEO Summit, the YouthEconomicOpportunities.org

our story
For more than eleven years, Making Cents International
has supported opportunities for individuals and
organizations in our sector to connect, exchange ideas,
and learn from one another with the aim to increase our
collective impact.
As the advancement of young people has become a global priority, we have
expanded the depth and breadth of our activities. In 2007, our first Global Youth
Microenterprise Conference gathered 234 practitioners from 42 countries. In 2017,
514 experts from 57 countries convened at our 11th annual GYEO Summit to
impact youth programs, partnerships, and policies. To date, the activities of our
YEO Network have engaged 174,525 participants from around the world.
Since 2007, the Summit has offered participants an important annual platform
to stay current with the sector. More than 90% of participants consistently report
that the Summit enables valuable learning, information exchange, and professional
connections that strengthen their practice. The utility of the Summit has also
increased. For example, 68% of 2017 participants indicated that the Summit
strengthened their capacity to carry out their work, compared to 47% of 2014
participants. As we move forward, Making Cents will continue to apply evaluation
feedback to the Summit’s topics, speakers, and format to ensure growth and value
for YEO Network members.

How Making Cents Monitors and Evaluates the Impact of the
YEO Network
Making Cents has monitored and evaluated the effectiveness of the YEO Network and our knowledge management activities
since the inaugural GYEO Summit in 2007. Our monitoring and evaluation approach explores links between the activities
of the YEO Network and its purpose: to build the capacity of youth development stakeholders to design, develop, and
implement high-impact youth economic opportunity programs, policies, and partnerships. We collect, monitor, and assess
data on the YEO Network’s activities from website statistics, registration forms, post-event surveys, and semi-structured
interviews, and use an adaptation of the “Ripple Model” and its four-level framework to evaluate results and impact.
Level 1: Knowledge Exchange
This level documents basic information about a knowledge-sharing event or tool,
using indicators such as number of attendees at the GYEO Summit and the number of
resources shared on the YouthEconomicOpportunities.org learning hub.
Level 2: Knowledge capital
This level examines the knowledge capital created as a result of a participant’s
interaction with a given event or tool. Indicators are tangible and intangible; they
include the number of countries in which resources were accessed and evidence of
new ideas generated.
Level 3: changed practices
This level identifies changes in practices that occur as individuals learn and connect
through their engagement with the YEO Network. Indicators include adaptation of new
tools and emergence of new partnerships.
Level 4: improved performance
This final level occurs as a result of changes implemented after a learning or networking
experience. By Level 4, individuals and organizations engaged in the YEO network have
contributed to genuine advancement in the field of youth economic opportunities. The
result is greater impact, scale of sustainability of programs and policies due to more
effective practices and partnerships.

testimonials
“I think what’s crucial about the Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit is that each year this is the
premier space where we bring together policy makers, donors, practitioners, and young leaders. I think that one
of the things that distinguishes the GYEOS is how it always works to make sure that the young leaders on the
front lines of these issues are also part of that dialogue in every session. That’s why USAID has invested as a
Gold Sponsor and sees value in the GYEOS.”
-Michael McCabe, Agency Youth Coordinator, USAID
“A 2017 highlight for me was participating in the Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit where I gained
exposure to emerging issues and innovative new practices. The Summit was a valuable opportunity to learn and
network with a great group of people united by their commitment to supporting young people.”
-Michael Bzdak, Global Director, Employee Engagement, Global Community Impact, Johnson & Johnson
“I came to the Summit hoping to find other people that are struggling with the same sorts of challenges we are
struggling with. Not only did we find that, but now we’ve found some partners to help solve these challenges as
well.”
-Adam Grunewald, CEO, Lynk Jobs
“There’s so much to gain from this [experience]: From the many different professionals that attend, to the
amazing opportunity [the Summit provides] for me and my colleagues to gain new learning and take this back
to our program in Uganda”
-Mwesigwe Bikie Isharaza, Deputy Chief of Party, USAID Feed the Future Uganda Youth Leadership in Agriculture, Chemonics International
“[Attending the Summit] is a huge opportunity, and meeting all these dynamic stakeholders has been really
beneficial. I’m going back home with partners and knowledge that I can pass on to the rest of the team that will
lead to better work and improvement in my own community. I have even met two potential mentors from the
Summit that can help me do better work with the girls back home, especially on education.”
-Mirabel Ngong, Founder, Community Empowerment Program, Mandela Washington Fellow
“After attending the Summit for the first time, we were impressed by the expertise, level of attendees, and the
opportunities to explore new partnerships that fosters economic opportunities for youth. We walked away both
encouraged and energized by our approach – and we found a community that will continue to strengthen our
plans for the future.”

Making Cents International is a woman-owned small business based in
Washington, DC, working to advance the social and economic well-being
of youth and adults around the world. We work with partner organizations
to build their capacity to support the people they serve—from smallholder
farmers who feed the planet to young leaders and entrepreneurs who shape
our communities. Since 1999, we have delivered services in 60 countries
in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the
Caribbean, implementing more than 130 projects.
