WHAT KIND OF
TEACHER DO YOU
WANT TO BE?
By : Afifah Bt Ahmad
As we get older, we will face many obstacles and challenges in
our lives. It could be about our job, family, or even ourselves. We
deal with this difficulty through our life experiences and the people
around us, such as parents and teachers, who provide guidance
from an early age. Being a teacher is not just about imparting
knowledge; it's also about instilling good habits in students. It is not
an easy job for most of us to do, as it entails significant
responsibilities. There's a saying that says we have our parents at
home, but our teachers are our parents at school. Teachers must
be respected and loved by students because they play an important
role in their future.
It is my ambition to become a teacher one day, and the type of
teacher I want to be is one who not only provides the best education to
students but also develops their behaviour so that they become good
and useful people in the future. In terms of education, there are a few
methods that I will apply during class sessions, including creating a
conducive environment for learning, using two-way communication while
teaching, using interactive tools or methods in teaching, giving students
more time, and giving students intensive exercises to practise. I had
previously learned in an inconvenient and uncomfortable environment,
which had a negative impact on my ability to concentrate on the lesson.
The goal of a conducive learning environment is to eliminate physical and
emotional intimidation.
The first step in creating a positive learning environment is to make
sure the classroom is clean, well-ventilated, and spacious enough for
students and teachers to move around freely. The chair and table should
be strategically placed so that the teacher has a clear view of the
students and can see the whiteboard without being distracted. Teachers
nowadays tend to overlook this aspect because they are preoccupied with
finishing topics. Students may lose focus and interest in studying if they
have a limited view of the class. The teacher must also be aware of the
students' learning disabilities. Students with vision problems, such as short-
sightedness, should be seated in the front row of the class for better
visibility.
Aside from that, as a teacher, I want to encourage good
communication in the classroom while students are learning. In general,
passive learning occurs when students only receive the information and
knowledge that the teacher provides during class. I want my students to
share their thoughts and ideas about the topics, as well as point out
any areas where they did not understand the lesson. This will assist
them in developing critical thinking skills while learning and will also
increase their confidence in asking questions in front of the class. As a
teacher, I will encourage students to express their understanding by
asking them several questions throughout the lesson in order to keep
them focused and encourage them to think more actively while learning.
Furthermore, in order to pique their interest in the subject, I
will incorporate interactive tools into my teaching method, such as a
fun quiz on the subject, to keep them engaged while also teaching
them. They will be required to team up with a classmate and form a
group of four students to complete a crossword puzzle or create a
creative mind map on the selected topics as part of a fun quiz. Living
in a technologically advanced era provides students and teachers with
numerous benefits, such as the ability for teachers to use the
YouTube application to make lessons more engaging. Playing a video
about the topic during class can help students understand it better
and more quickly.
Aside from that, if I were a science teacher, I would create an
educational science model to help my students visualise topics such
as photosynthesis or human organs in science textbooks. Finally, in
terms of education, I want to be a teacher who always puts my
students' needs first and gives them extra attention so that they
can excel in their studies. If there are any students who are
struggling to understand the material, I will devote extra time to
teaching and guiding them. I'll also give them intensive exercises to
practise and improve on the subjects, as well as keep track of
their progress.
As a teacher, I was also responsible for assisting my students'
emotional and behavioural needs. If there is a problem between the
students, I will consult with them and offer my advice. Teenagers
develop at school. It also involves immature actions and decisions
because they are at a stage in their lives where they are still trying
to find their own identity and dealing with a variety of emotional
issues. As a teacher and an adult, I will do my best to guide them
with all of my knowledge and experience. Aside from that, if I notice
an immoral act in the classroom, such as stealing, I will stop it and
give the students advice so that it does not happen again.
Finally, as a teacher, I will motivate my students to work hard in
order to achieve their goals. Students in their teenage years often lack
motivation and inspiration to succeed. As a teacher, it is my responsibility
to not only provide them with the best educational methods, but also to
motivate and inspire them to continue studying hard for a better future.
As a teacher, I will treat my students as if they were sisters or brothers,
so that they can confide in me and share their problems with me. The
number of students who commit suicide has risen dramatically each year as
a result of the stress and depression they face during their adolescent
years. Some students also had to deal with various family issues, which
harmed their academic reputation. I want to be a teacher who can assist
them both academically and emotionally.
Eventually, we must never overlook the emotional
responsibilities of teachers. Some students struggle in school
when their teacher puts too much pressure on them. They are
still looking for their future career options and abilities when
they are teenagers. We should provide them with not only
education, but also warmth, love, and a stagnant mental and
emotional state as teachers. I believe this is a true teacher
quality, and I aspire to be this kind of teacher.
