Tales from a
Dolphin Caretaker

John Widick

My path to becoming an animal professional who works with
marine mammals was not a typical one. Most of us knew what
we wanted to be when we were in elementary school, and took
courses all throughout high school and college that were aiming
for a job.

For me, the story was different. The elementary school part is the
same, I dreamed of working with dolphins because back when I
was little I didn’t have any grownups telling me to get a real job.
As I grew up, however, I started looking at jobs that were more
practical. Lucky for me even though I “got real” in high school
and began preparing for more fiscally responsible careers, I kept
up my other skill sets purely out of fun. These would be things like
freediving on coral reefs, being on the swim team, and volunteering
at a local sea turtle rescue hospital and nature center. Even though
society was steering me toward more practical careers, my heart
was always getting me ready for the one that I now consider my
calling.

My first paid job with animals was an internship at an aquarium
in South Florida, near my home. I would be caring for dolphins
as well as seals and sea lions. I was positively elated. I had just
graduated from college and returned from studying in Egypt. A
natural progression right? Sometimes our whims turn out to be the
turning points in our lives, and I went from pyramids and dialect
classes to pool scrubbing and fish prep in what felt like no time flat.

This is the part where I break the mystique of working with marine
mammals. There’s only one place where you get to frolic with them
carefree, and that’s on TV.

I just mentioned fish prep, well interns have to start sorting fish into
different buckets at 6 AM. The water you thaw the fish in must be
kept extremely cold, and you have to judiciously choose the highest
quality fish, all with numb hands from the cold water. Then, if you
get done on time you have to haul out the hydraulic scrubber, fill
it with gas, plug it in, and get your scuba gear on and scrub the
algae off the walls of a sea lion pool with a big spinning brush. You
have to hold on tight, otherwise you will spin in a circle yourself
while underwater. Does this sound like frolicking? For some interns
who are would-be folickers it is torturous, but for me it was heaven.

I felt like I was demonstrating all the skills I had developed as a
young person purely for fun. I never knew I would need them one
day for my career. What was more exciting, when I was the area-
watcher for a given animal habitat, I got to share my passion for the
ocean with people from Latin America, the Middle East, and many
other regions whose languages I had studied, and that wasn’t
all my linguistic skills were good for. I began learning a secret
universal language that can be used to communicate with all forms
of life, the language of positive reinforcement.

As a kid I had to settle for the idea that talking to animals was
a fantasy. That’s because in movies animals speak English, use
wit and sarcasm, and sometimes sing. As it turns out a human
can learn to communicate with an animal almost as well as an
animal can communicate with its own kind. There may not be an
alphabet or a chart of verb conjugations, but learning their sounds,
behaviors, and body language, you can adopt a whole system of
sharing information that opens up your mind to seeing the world
the way an animal does. You may only be able to comprehend a
fraction of how they perceive life, but that is infinitely more than you
could gather from a book or movie or even a nature documentary.

It’s now ten years since my internship, and I have the title of Senior
Animal Care Specialist at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. I work
with such amazing animals as the dolphins Winter and Hope. I
constantly find myself endeavoring to explain, in many languages,
just how amazing my journey has been, and how impressed I am
by all the living things around me.

Couple our sugar sand beaches with breathtaking sunsets and
you’ve got a recipe for unforgettable memories. Many beachside
and rooftop restaurants, bars and hotels along the beach serve
happy hour specials and phenomenal views to offer the perfect end
to your day.

The Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival on Clearwater Beach operates
364 days a year from two hours before until two hours after

under the stars. Bring a blanket or low lying lawn chair. Movies
begin at dusk popcorn and concessions are available on-site.

Dolphin Trail

One of the most popular free activities around is the
Clearwater Dolphin Trail. With over 200+ (and counting!)
uniquely decorated dolphins located along this trail, this is a
family-friendly way to explore Tampa Bay.

Started in 2012 with fewer than 1 dozen dolphins, area
businesses have been “joining the pod” and hiring area
artists to give each dolphin it’s own unique look. A map of
dolphins along with their location addresses can be found at
www.clearwatersdolphins.com or by downloading the App!
Search “The Clearwater Dolphin Trail“ in the App Store or
on Google Play
Consider slipping on some comfortable shoes and following
the trail yourself. You can share your experience by posting
to social media with #ClearwatersDolphins.

INSIDER TIP: Stop into our area visitors center for a free dolphin
postcard to send home to friends or family. A listing of locations
and hours of operation can be found on page 5 of this guide
