SITKA : STRAIGHT OUT
OF A STORY BOOK

Widely considered to be Alaska’s most scenic seaside town, Sitka is set on the outer
banks of Baranof Island on the waterways of the Inside Passage. Mt. Edgecumbe, an extinct,
snowcapped volcano that bears a striking resemblance to Japan’s Mt. Fuji, presides over the
landscape, while the Tongass National Forest, with its massive stands of west hemlock and
Sitka spruce delivers magnificent views of the Alaskan wilderness. As the only community in
Southeastern Alaska that fronts the Pacific Ocean, Sitka looks out over the waterscape dotted
with heavily wooded islands, one of which, Apple Island, is the exclusive home of Talon Lodge.
Sitka history dates back over 5,000 years ago to the time when it was settled by the Tlingit
(KLING-IT) Indians. At least a quarter of the town’s population today can still claim Native ancestry

and their heritage is widely evident in local woodwork, silver carvings, basketry, weaving and totem
carvings. Today, Sitka is a virtual paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and is legendary for its saltwater,
stream and lake fishing and black-tailed deer hunting, as well as for its hiking, seaplane tours, and
sea kayaking. Sitka’s wildlife is as magnificent as its scenery. The area is home to an abundance of
land and marine species including brown bears, black-tailed deer sea otters, river otters, harbor
seals, and bald eagles. Sitka also offers excellent opportunities for whale watching and bird watching.

The saltwater sport offered by Talon Lodge is nothing short of fantastic. According to the
Alaska Fish and Game department, Sitka anglers benefit from the saltwater salmon fishery that is
the best in Alaska. In addition to great Salmon fishing, the Halibut fishing in Sitka is some of the
best in Alaska; and, fortunately, the Halibut fishing grounds are only minutes from the Salmon
fishing grounds. Sitka also provides Ling Cod and Yellow Eye fishing.

FRESHWATER
FISHING TRIPS

Our freshwater fishing trips feature native Steelhead in the spring, native Rainbows and
Cutthroats in the summer, and a variety of wild Alaska Salmon. The Sockeye Salmon run is in late
June and early July. The Silver Salmon run is in late August through late September.
