Lord of the Flies

Introduction

Lord of the Flies is a story. A plane crashes onto an island. The only
survivors are a group of boys. There are no adults on the island.

What will happen to the boys?
Will the boys be rescued?

Chapter 1

The Pink Shell

It is very hot. A boy is walking alone. He is called Ralph. Ralph is
twelve years old. Ralph does not know where he is going. A bird
with red and yellow feathers flies above him. There are no clouds
in the sky.

Ralph looks around. There are many tall trees. The trees have fruit
on them. Ralph is happy. The island is beautiful. The sea is blue. It
is a small and clean island. There is fruit to eat.

There has been a plane crash. The plane has crashed onto an
island. The island is small. Only a few boys have survived. No
adults have survived.

A fat boy is following Ralph. He is
wearing glasses. Ralph goes for a swim.
The water is cool. The fat boy cannot
swim. He watches Ralph.

The fat boy is called Piggy. He is
intelligent. Piggy wants to make a list
of all the boys on the island. Piggy is worried. He tells Ralph,
“No one knows we are here. We may die. What are we going to
do?”

Ralph and Piggy go and look for survivors. They are walking. Piggy
sees a pink shell. The pink shell is pretty. It is delicate. Ralph
blows into the shell. It makes a loud noise. A lot of birds fly from
the tree. A little boy appears. He was hiding in the forest. The
little boy walks towards Ralph and Piggy.

Ralph blows into the shell
again. Ten more boys come
out of the forest. Piggy sees
two boys. They are twins.
They are called Sam and Eric.
The twins are ten years old.

There are about twenty boys. All the boys are talking. Some are
laughing. One small boy is crying. He wants to go home. Sam and
Eric are eating fruit.

Ralph tells the boys to be quiet. He wants to have a meeting. Piggy
wants to make a list of all the boys. He does not have a pen.
Nobody listens to Piggy. The boys laugh at him.

Ralph tells the boys he is going to be
chief. Jack is angry. He wants to be
chief. Ralph tells Jack he can be a
hunter. Jack is happy. Ralph wants to
look around the island. He takes Jack
with him. Jack has got a knife. A boy
called Simon comes with them. Piggy wants to come but Ralph
does not let him.

Ralph, Jack and Simon want to go to the top of the mountain. The
boys are excited. They are discovering a new place. When they get
to the top of the mountain, they are very happy.
“This is a very beautiful island,” says Jack.

There are no towns, no roads and no shops on the island. Also,
there is no electricity on the island. The boys run down the
mountain. They see a pig. Jack stabs the pig. The pig bleeds and
runs away.

Chapter 2

The Fire

Ralph blows into the shell. All the boys are quiet. Ralph tells the
boys there are no adults on the island. The boys will have to look
after themselves. Ralph wants to make rules. Every day the boys
will have a meeting. They will meet in the same place.

Piggy is worried. He thinks nobody will rescue the survivors. The
boys may have to stay on the island for a long time.

A little boy is crying. He has seen a beast in the
forest. The little boy saw the beast last night.
He is frightened. Ralph tells the little boy he was
dreaming. The little boy is worried. He thinks
the beast will come tonight and eat him.

“Do not worry,” says Ralph.

Most of the boys like Ralph. He tells the boys they will be rescued.
Ralph wants to have fun. The island has food and water. The
weather is hot and the boys can play.

Piggy wants to make a fire. If a ship sees the smoke they will
rescue the boys. The fire will be on top of the mountain. The
children run to the top of the mountain. The big boys collect wood
to make a fire. The small boys collect dry leaves to make a fire.

Ralph and Jack do not know what to do. They do not have any
matches. There are no shops on the island. How are the boys
going to start a fire?
“Give me your glasses.” Shouts Jack.
“No,” replies Piggy.
Jack takes Piggy’s glasses. He
pushes Piggy on the floor. Jack uses
Piggy’s glasses to start a fire.

It is evening. The fire keeps the boys warm. The fire can be
dangerous. It can spread and destroy the whole island.
“Where is the boy who saw the beast?” asks Piggy. Everyone is
quiet. Nobody knows where the small boy has gone. Has the beast
killed him?

Chapter 3

Huts

Jack is in the forest. It is very quiet. It is also very hot. He is
hunting. Jack wants to kill a pig. He has got a spear. Jack is waiting
for a pig. He sees a pig. The pig runs away. Jack is angry. He
wanted to kill the pig. Jack goes back to the beach.

On the beach some of the boys are building
huts. They will sleep in the huts. Most of
the boys are playing. Some of the boys are
hunting.

There are no clocks on the island. Ralph
blows the pink shell. This means it is time
for a meeting. Ralph wants all the boys to build huts. If it rains, the
boys can go inside the huts. Jack wants some of the boys to hunt
animals.

A lot of small boys are having
nightmares. They dream of the
beast. Many boys are frightened.
They want to go home.

Simon goes for a walk. He takes some little boys with him. They
look at the beautiful flowers. It is sunset. The boys go back to the
huts.

Chapter 4

Long hair

The boys have been on the island for many weeks. They do not
have a calendar. They do not know what day it is. The boys’ hair
had grown. It is long. Their clothes are torn. On the island, there
are no shops or barbers.

In the morning, the boys play in the sand. There is no school on the
island. The big boys swim in the sea. At midday, the island
becomes very hot. By evening, the island is cool. At night, the
island becomes cold.

Nobody has got a watch. Piggy wants to make a sundial. It is easy
to make a sundial. Piggy is clever. He knows a lot of things.

A boy shouts, “A ship! A ship!”

The boys are happy. The ship will
rescue them. Ralph and the boys
run to the fire. It is not burning.
The ship goes away. Ralph is very
angry. Piggy is very sad.

Jack has been hunting. He should have been looking after the fire.
The boys have killed a pig. They have spent all morning hunting.
Ralph shouts, “If the ship had seen the smoke we would have been
rescued.”

Ralph is chief. He told Jack to look after the fire. He did not listen
to Ralph. Jack wants to hunt. The ship
has gone away. The boys may have to
stay on the island for a long time. The
little boys start to cry. They want to go
home.

Piggy shouts at Jack. Jack punches Piggy. He falls down. Piggy’s
glasses fall off. They break. Piggy is very sad. He cannot see
without his glasses. Piggy starts to cry.
Jack wants to eat some meat. He roasts the pig. The boys eat the
meat. Jack killed the pig by cutting its throat.

Chapter 5

The Beast

Ralph tells everyone that he wants to have a meeting. He is waiting
for the boys to be quiet. This is going to be an important meeting.
When the boys are quiet, Ralph tells them three things.

1. The island is getting dirty. The boys must keep the island clean.
2. The boys must build more huts.
3. The boys must keep the fire burning.

Ralph knows that a lot of boys are unhappy. They have nightmares
and are frightened of the dark. Some boys have disappeared.

It is getting dark. Jack has explored the island. He has not seen any
beasts. A little boy saw the beast last night. It was running in the
forest. Another boy also saw the beast. He saw the beast near the
sea.

All the boys talk about the beast. Is the beast a ghost? Will the
beast eat the boys? Ralph wants to talk about the fire. The boys
are talking about the beast. Ralph is angry. He shouts at the boys.

Jack tells Ralph that he is a bad leader. Jack wants to be chief. He
is going to find the beast and kill it. Jack does not listen to Ralph.
Most of the boys follow Jack. They ignore Ralph. Piggy is worried.

He knows that Jack does not like him. If Jack becomes chief, he will
beat Piggy.
At night it is very dark. There are many stars in the sky. All the
boys have fallen asleep. There is a plane in the sky. A man jumps
from the plane. He is wearing a parachute. The man lands on the
island. He is trapped in some trees. The man dies.

Chapter 6

Ralph has a dream

It is a hot afternoon. The boys are in the forest. They are eating
fresh fruit. Ralph’s hair is very long. He wants to cut his hair.
Ralph would like to brush his teeth. He does not have a
toothbrush. Ralph wants to be rescued. He wants to go home.
Ralph looks at the boys. They all look dirty. Their clothes are torn.

Ralph looks at the sea. He wants a plane or ship to come and
rescue the boys. Ralph is worried. Will the boys be rescued? Will
the boys live forever on the island?

Ralph falls asleep. He has a dream. Ralph dreams of his home. He
lives in a cottage. Ralph’s home smells of bread. He has got a
horse. It is snowing. Ralph is sitting by the fire. His father is
reading the newspaper. Ralph’s mother is listening to the radio.
There are many books in Ralph’s home.

Ralph wakes up. He looks around. Ralph is sad. He wants to be
rescued.

Ralph can hear a strange noise. The boys are chasing a pig. A boy
throws a spear at the pig. It is hurt. The boys surround the pig.
They shout, “We are going to kill the pig.”

It is getting dark. The boys go back to the huts. Jack wants to
spend the night in the forest. He wants to find the beast. Ralph
does not want to go into the forest.
“Are you frightened of the dark?” asks Jack.
“No,” replies Ralph.
“You are a coward.” Says Jack.
“No I am not,” replies Ralph.
Jack and Ralph go into the forest. It is dark. It is very quiet. The
beast may kill them. The boys see something in the tree. It looks
like a big man. They are scared. Ralph and Jack run away.

Chapter 7

The Lord of the Flies

Ralph tells Piggy he saw the beat in the forest. He describes the
beast. It has big eyes and long teeth. The beast looks like a man.

Jack and Ralph have an argument. Jack tells the boys he wanted to
kill the beast. He calls Ralph a coward. Jack does not want to be
Ralph’s friend. He wants to be chief. Jack runs and hides in the
forest. He is a bad boy.

Piggy does not believe there is a beast on the island. He wants to
be rescued. Piggy tells the boys he wants to make a fire by the sea.
Also, Piggy wants to make a list of all the boys. Sam and Eric go and
find some fresh fruit.

Simon goes into the forest. He is alone. Simon watches the
butterflies. They are beautiful. Simon can hear Jack coming. He
hides. Jack is talking to some boys. He is says, “I am chief.”
Jack wants to go hunting. The hunters are going to kill a pig. Then
they will have a feast.

The hunters go and look for a pig.
They see one. The pig is asleep.
Ralph cuts the pig’s throat. The pig
bleeds. It dies. The boy cuts the pig’s
head off. They put the head on a
stick. They want to give the pig’s head to the beast.

The hunters take the pig to the top of the mountain. They want to
make a fire. Jack decides to go and steal Piggy’s glasses. Jack
wants his hunters to hit Ralph and Piggy.
It is evening. Ralph and Piggy are sitting by the fire. They are
talking. Ralph looks at the sky. There are many clouds. It may rain.
Ralph is sad. He is not afraid of the beast. Ralph is afraid of Jack.
He knows that Jack will make trouble.
Simon looks at the pigs head on the stick. It is very frightening.
Simon is confused. He does not know what to do. Simon is going
crazy. He thinks the pig can talk. There are many flies on the pig’s
head. The pig says, “I am the Lord of the Flies.”

Chapter 8

Death

Simon is looking at the Lord of the Flies. He is alone. It is going to
rain. Simon can see lightning. Suddenly, his nose
begins to bleed. Simon is ill. There is no doctor on
the island. Simon begins to walk. He goes towards
the mountain.

Simon sees the dead man in the tree. There are
many flies on the dead man. Simon is shocked. This is the beast.
Simon wants to tell Ralph that the beast is a dead man. He can see
Ralph but he is far away. Simon is very weak. He begins to walk
towards Ralph.

Ralph and Piggy light a fire. They know it is going to rain. If it rains,
the fire will stop. The small children are playing in the water.
Ralph and Piggy go and see Jack

In Jack’s group, the boys are eating meat. The boys are happy.
Some boys are singing. Some boys are dancing. Some boys are
playing in the water. When the boys see Ralph and Piggy, they
become quiet.

A boy runs towards Piggy. He bumps into Piggy. He falls down. All
the boys laugh at Piggy. Jack gives Ralph and Piggy some meat. It is
delicious. Ralph knows something bad is going to happen.

Jack says, “I am now chief.”
Lightning flashes. All the boys
can hear the loud thunder. It
begins to rain. Jack and his
friend begins to dance. It is a
strange dance. They sing, “We
are going to kill the beast.”
The boys surround something on the ground. It looks like an
animal. It is Simon. He is talking about a dead man. Jack tells the
boys to beat Simon. The boys beat Simon.
Jack kills Simon.

Chapter 9

What is going to happen?

The boys have been on the island for a long time. They may never
be rescued. Ralph and Piggy are hiding from Jack. He wants to hit
them. Sam and Eric are also Ralph and Piggy’s friends. They collect
wood and help make a fire.

Ralph thinks about Simon. He is shocked. Simon was murdered.
The police will not arrest Jack. On the island there are no laws.
Ralph is scared. He wants to go home. Piggy tells Ralph not to
worry. Every time Ralph closes his eyes, he sees Simon’s dead
body.

On top of the mountain, Jack is beating a boy. The boy is crying.
Jack likes to hit people. He is a bully. After Jack hits the boy, he
says, “Tomorrow we are going to hunt.”

Jack is holding a spear. He is now the chief. All the boys are
frightened of him. If somebody does not listen to him, Jack beats
them. Jack is a cruel chief.

Ralph and Piggy make a fire. Sam and Eric get some fruit. The boys
talk about getting rescued. It is getting dark. Before they go to
sleep, Ralph tells the boys a story. Piggy wants to write a letter to
his aunt. He does not have a pen or paper. Also, there is no post
office on the island.

Ralph dreams about a bus journey. He is in his village. The bus is
red. The conductor is friendly. Ralph is going to the cinema. He is
happy.
Suddenly, the boys wake up. They can hear a noise. Is it the beast?
Someone in the forest is saying, “Piggy come here.”
Piggy is very frightened. He knows it is Jack. It is very dark. Ralph
and Piggy are attacked. Jack steals Piggy’s glasses.

Chapter 10

Piggy is killed

It is early in the morning. Piggy is very sad. He has not got his
glasses. Piggy cannot see. He is going to get his glasses back. Piggy
blows into the shell. He wants to see Jack. Piggy will tell Jack that
he is a bully. Ralph will help Piggy.

In the afternoon, Ralph and Piggy go and see Jack. It is very hot.
The boys look dirty. They are tired and scared. Ralph blows the
shell. All of Jack’s friends appear. Ralph wants to have a meeting.
No one listens to him.

Jack comes out of the hut. Ralph shouts, “You are a thief.” Jack
runs towards Ralph. He stabs Ralph in the arm. Ralph and Jack
have a fight. Ralph does not want to fight.

Jack does not give Piggy his
glasses. Ralph is very angry. He
shouts at Jack. “You are a very
bad boy. You are a thief. I do
not like you.”
Ralph hits Jack. They have another fight.

Piggy gets the shell. He shouts, “Everyone listen to me!”

The boys are silent. Piggy tells the boys they are being silly. They
will not be rescued. The boys will have to live on the island forever.
They will never see their families again. Jack gets hold of Piggy’s
shell. He smashes the shell. Jack pushes Piggy off the cliff. He falls
forty feet. Piggy dies.
Jack is laughing. He looks at Ralph. The shell is broken and Piggy is
dead. Ralph cannot do anything. He is shocked. Jack throws his
spear at Ralph. It cuts Ralph. He runs away. Jack is laughing. He is
shouting. “I am going to kill you Ralph!”

Chapter 11

What happens to Ralph?

Ralph is hiding in the forest. Nobody knows where he is. Ralph
remembers Piggy. He is very sad. Ralph has an injury. He has a
scar on his chest. Ralph’s hair is long and dirty.

Ralph knows Jack is going to kill him. He is very worried. Ralph can
see a boy. He has got a spear. Ralph is hungry. He wants to eat
some fruit. If Ralph goes and gets some fruit, Jack may kill him.

Ralph quietly walks towards the banana tree. He eats five bananas.
Then Ralph goes into the forest. He sees a skull. It is on a stick.
There are flies on the skull. This is the Lord of the Flies. Ralph is
not frightened of the beast.

It is evening. Ralph is still hiding. He is tired. He does not fall
asleep. He is afraid. If he falls asleep, Jack may find him and kill
him. It is dark. Ralph is afraid. He can hear the boys shouting “We
are going to kill Ralph!”

Sam and Eric are now Jack’s friends. They will do what Jack tells
them. Ralph sees Simon and Eric. They tell him that Jack is going to
kill him. Ralph runs into the forest and hides. He quickly falls
asleep.

It is morning. Ralph suddenly wakes up. He can hear the hunters.
They are near. The hunters are looking for Ralph. He can hear Jack.
Some hunters come near Ralph. He stabs one of them.

Ralph hides in the wood. Jack starts a fire. Ralph has to leave the
forest. Will Jack catch Ralph? Ralph is terrified. He does not know
where to hide. The smoke is making him cough. Ralph keeps on

running. Nobody will help Ralph.

Most of the island is on fire. All the
animals are running. All the boys are
running. Some boys are chasing
Ralph. They throw spears at him.
They want to kill him. Ralph is very
frightened. He is hungry and tired.

He must keep on running.

Ralph can hear the boys. They are behind him. Ralph wants to cry.
He falls down. Ralph stand up. He
can see a soldier. “Hello, I have
come to rescue you,” says the
soldier.

A ship saw the fire on the island. It came to rescue the children.
Ralph is saved.

All the boys are going home. Ralph remembers when he first saw
the island. It was beautiful. As the ship leaves the island, Ralph
starts to cry. He is very sad because he remembers Piggy and
Simon.
