Practical procedures in estimation of hatchery facilities, including tank
sizes, blower and pump capacities are outlines in Reyes and Torres
(1985) and in Kungvankij et al (1986c).

DRAINING THE TANK
This is employed by using a hose. The hose may either be
plastic/canvass/rubberized, plastic hose is transparent and flow of water
can be seen unlike the rubberized or canvass type which are opaque
and water flow is not visible. It can only be determined as filled when
water flow through out on the other end.
To siphon out water in the tank, follow the steps:
1. Get the hose and wrap one end with nylon net of fine mesh and tie
tightly the net seine as filter.
2. Hold closely both ends at the same level in one hand.
Information Sheet CODE LO3-3
3. Fill hose with water until it flows through. Then stop filling.
4. Submerge the other end with filter into the tank and keep still. Be
sure water do not flow on the other end, so keep it higher.
5. Lower the other end slowly to the floor so that water flow through
continuously.
6. Call your instructor to check if you have done the right thing.
Information Sheet CODE LO3-3
NOTE: Do not allow the tank to drain completely while the
remaining stock are not yet collected. Drain about ½ of total
volume and gradually increasing the volume while
collection is done simultaneously.
B. Drainage method
If tank has a drain pipe installed at the bottom of the tank, you can
do the steps listed below:
1. Fit in or install the screen/filter over the drainage tightly in
order for the stocks not to escape.

2. Turn the regulator valve slowly to drain. Close when
necessary.
3. Call your instructor to check if you done the right thing.

Chemical Components of Disinfectants
Disinfection Of Contaminants Tanks Or Ponds And Material
Generally, disinfection of tanks or ponds is carried out with Quicklime
and sometimes CALCIUM CYNAMIDE. Potassium permanganate can be
used.
For disinfecting equipment, commercial sodium hypo chlorite,
quaternary ammonium compounds, iodophores or benzalkonium
chloride can be used.
a. Disinfection with quicklime or cyanide , this is
recommended for large tanks and ponds with natural
bottoms.
1. water must be emptied while the bottom is
still wet roughly crushed quicklime and
spread at a ratio of 100 gm (3 ½ 02 ) per
sq.m. (1,000 kg or 1 ton / ha.
2. Left for 15 days until it become milky
3. Replace by Fresh water
b. Disinfection . w/ potassium permanganate.
1 gm / 1,00 liters ( 22 gal ) of water is suitable for
small tanks. Weaker bath is given if fish cannot lee
removed 1gm / 200 liters. The fish can with stand for
1 hour.
Disinfection of equipment
= Benzalkonium chloride Solution
600 to 1,000 PPM of active ingredient
= General recommends sodium hypochlorite,
Ammonium compounds or iodophores For Fish
