Deeds
Abstract of correspondence from Christopher Whittick, East Sussex Record Office:-
It is impractical for copies to be made of all deeds - they are unwieldy, verbose, and contain
only fragments of information per square foot.
My feeling is that the conveyance to the Society, and any subsequent deeds or other current
instruments such as leases, should remain at Adams & Remers, Solicitors, and that everything
else, with a copy only of the head conveyence, should come to ESRO. Because they would
form part of the archive of the Society, we would aim to keep the West Sussex deeds here and
would advise against sending them to WSRO.
I am happy to undertake the selection at no cost to SAS, and I would hope that John Mitchell
would be able to make a room available for the exercise. He and I did discuss something
similar when the
problem with the wall below the model building came up.
Of course there will be odd occasions when pre-acquisition deeds will need to be looked at,
but even after my time I'm sure ESRO will remain a friend of the Society and be happy to cart
the bundles down the hill for perusal. In my experience, however, enquiries of that sort with
the older deeds benefit more from the expertise of an archivist than that of a lawyer, although
both are necessary for an opinion.

Sussex Archaeological Society - Property Terriers

The charitable objectives of the Sussex Archaeological
Society are defined in the Memorandum:
'to promote and encourage the study of archaeology and
history in all their branches (with special reference to
the Counties of East Sussex and West Sussex) and in
furtherance of such object:-
(there then follow some 23 clauses detailing how the
Society acts in 'furtherance of such object'; 11 of these
clauses concern the maintenance of properties)
The most relevant to this document is clause (f)
'to maintain and manage buildings, open spaces and
places of historical or archaeological interest or of
natural beauty or public resort, as places of resort for
recreation, education, and instruction with the power to
make charges for inspection of and admission to any
such buildings or places'.
