02 Practice & Scraps
Self Introdu ction My name is Roy Sebastian, I was born in Indonesia and I am fond of realism in art. I am introverted but once im comfortable and close to someone, I would appear as a different person. I would consider myself as someone who is hardworking and determined, but at times, i could still lose hope, especially since i tend to be a perfectionist. Personally, I really enjoy listening to music, I love drawing realistically using graphite pencil or charcoal at times, Roy Sebastian Lumantara
Reason to study animation : • I really want to make anima - tion for advertisement spe - cifically • Learn morea bout the digital softwares and how to use it • I would love to learn more about digital art Things to achieve in 2023 • I would love to have a schol - arship this year and help my parents financially • Get a nice part time-job • I would love to sesrve in my church Things that Irritate me : • Unclean places • My dry skin • Insects • Hot places Things that fascinate me : • People’s thought • Architecture • Nature • Celebrities Activities that i like • Listening to Music • Scrolling Social Media • Deep talks with friends • Draw realistic artworks My Concerns • Not getting Scholarship • My family • Finance • Future • All these informations can actually be used as an inspiration for your story Credits to Kimberly Tan
Emergence Generation of Ideas This assignment calls for photographs with subject(s) which would be combined into a short story. My story revolves around my own experience of day to day life, where i must leave warmth and comfort that my home provides to a bright areas with buzzing flocks of people. The discomfort would constantly increase, but in the end, i realize that home is dynamic, and it’s everywhere once I reflect deeper. • The idea is to create a transition from warmer colors to cooler ones, and finally show the comfort in having cool colors • and to use as many visual elements as possible. • How I set it the room up --->
• There are several shots that i do not ended up using, such as the one where I used my table lamp as my source of light and contrast • I used my violin stand to put my phone. • Decided to use this shot and developed it further
• These are the pictures that i ended up not using. • At first, for the “breakfast can wait” photo, i could involve the element of frames, but it turned out to be underwhelming
Thoughts : This specific picture, i intend to conjure the feeling of anxiety and distress. I thought I would use extreme contrast and brightness in order to cause discomfort, but it didnt turn out as how i wished. This photograph I captured with a friend, being in luck, I got a everyone’s faces to look at thehe left, which somewhat conjures confusion. Thoughts : This specific photo I did on a bar table where I would usually have my breakfast each morning. I wanted this photo to express my slothful tendencies before having my breakfast. In the morning usually, I’d always have stomachache which vanishes my craving to consume anything Thoughts : As i was looking around school during open house, i found this vending machine on the second floor whilst having my lunch with some friends. I adore the contrast of the vending machine being encompassed by darkness, which reminds me of the quote “look at the bright side”. I decided to use this photo as an ending to my short story. • LECTURER’S FEEDBACK Try to give more information regarding each shots, such as the visual elements that exist in each shot, the angles, and types of shots
From Scraps to Scraps Prompt : “ A robot walks along a high balcony, or into a glass elevator, inside or outside of a hotel. A dark and mysterious figure follows and approaches the robot without his knowing it. All of a sudden, the robot is hit, or is thrown over the edge of the balcony, or through the glass wall of the elevator. He either grabs something on the way down or lands on something. “ I decided to make a short storyboard about a robot that was invited to a high balcony and would be killed by a mysterious entity which follows the man who invited the robot to the balcony.
• This is the rough idea I made using a pencil in class
Stop Motion Drafts LECTRUER’S NOTE : 1. Rolling Coin Draft : Try to make something new, make something other than a regluar plain circle for the rolling coin. 2. Bouncing Ball Draft : Theres one anticipation that is too much Try to draw the square frame on every shots
Thoughts “Use a frame, personally, i Feel like the ball seems to be floating at this point. Lacks information” Thoughts “I don’t like how the animation ends with this shot, and theres no sense of depth which further convinced me to draw the frame in each shot” Thoughts “ A little bit how theres a frame in the first shot, then its gone from the second onwards
The man behind the line/phone(caregiver and innocent) - probably modern environment, because a phone only exist after the advancement of technology A story about growing, specifically focusing on a child that has been facing an immense amount of confusion in his journey towards adulthood. As reality crushes his hopes and dreams, he hides behind his imaginary make beliefs, until one day he hears a loud ring from the attic. He picks the phone up and hears a sound of a man telling specific instruction with no context. He continues to hear ring each day as his illustions fade away. Realizing that it could be himself from the future telling the boy all this, he started asking questions to the man through the man that prevails no answer whatsoever. until one day the phone stwwwwwoped ringing. Story #1 idea LECTRUER’S NOTE : * A story involving time could be hard and confusing * It’s not that interesting since there isnt any on going conflict or problems, since most of them are solved due to the man behind the phone Story Ideas
LECTRUER’S NOTE : * A story involving time could be hard and confusing * It’s not that interesting since there isnt any conflict, whats the consequence of seeing the future? * A situation is needed * Try to find out what makes a story unique Story #2 idea What if I could see the future? (outlaw caregiver) - Possibly in a modern era because it might involve some technologies Reflection “My two ideas were rejected, due to it involving time, which is a confusing element in a story if I do not understand it. I also feel very uninspired. therefore, I decided to go to youtube and see if there are any experts in generating ideas for great stories. While surfing through youtube, I found this youtuber name Abbie Emmons. She explained her steps in creating her own unique stories based off. I also searched for a few more inspirations such as Ana Neu” Source : Youtube
A New Method I’ve decided to research on ways to come up with ideas for my story, since i’ve been having a lot of trouble making the stories make sense whilst having a nice flow without having add - ing more to it, making it a lot more complicat - ed. I came across a youtube video by Abbie Em - mons, where she brainstorms on how she creates ideas. She explained in the video that we need to take a few of our favourite movies or films, and take out the aspects of the movies that makes the movie very iconic and memorable. The aspects that we might need would include • Genre • Theme • Character • Plot Using this method, I decided to pick these movies as my favourites : • The wild child (love the plot) • Devil wears prada (settings) • Enola Holmes (characters and settings) • Everything everywhere all at once (love the life lesson and plot) Source : vocal Media Source : Youtube Source : Youtube Source : Youtube
Could be a story about a boy who is different than others, doesnt rlly like sports and hanging out with other people, he dis - likes other guys for their behavior, dirty, and very physical. Until one day, his parents put him into an all boys school, where he de - spises most of the guys in there. Being in a dorm with other guys dont really help him either. Having his own hobby of doing arts and crafts rather than sports, and always being clean and germaphobic due to living under a fancy rooftop and house, There are times when he sneak around the dorm midnight just to visit a friend (girl) near a lake outside the school. The girl said that she was going to leave the country to somewhere else since there are certain things in her family that needs to be re - solved. Finally, after losing his only friend he became really sad and down. His teacher recognized it and shows him to do sports since its the next lesson. I want the mother to finally realize that her late husband actually had so many similarities with her son (actually enjoying things that are effiminate such as fashion, baking, cooking, arts and crafts, etc.) but she didnt realize from the start becuase he was a bit traumatized by it. She sent him to an all boys school after seeing her son play - ing dolls and liking effiminate things, meanwhile disliking sports and refuse to talk to other boys Story #3 idea Characters to be used

Gesture and Facial References from : New Masters Academy (youtube) Thoughts “These are practices I did for myself in my house, It’s to prepare me for more figure and gesture drawing for the next lecture*
Thoughts “ the amount of time given to draw each one is the things that makes me stress out, leading to sketchy lines like these”
Thoughts Ms. Lye (lecturer) told the whole class to draw one expression and color it with watercolor, I did, and she told me to combine other color, for this case, She told me to use cooler color such as purple or blue.
Thoughts “ Why does my art style make my face look old?”
Thoughts “It’s so hard to nail happiness” Thoughts “The three face on the bottom are very similar to one another”
Lecturer’s Note Ms. Lye (lecturer) told me that the expression is not exaggerated enough, its too stiff, she showed me an example here
