WHY WOULD ANYONE BUY A TIMESHARE
IF THEY CAN RENT INSTEAD?

“Why would anyone buy a timeshare if they can rent instead?” is an old adage that
has been said for years. Timeshare developers have always been wary of the rental
concept for fear it would impact sales. Yet, in a world of Airbnb and Timeshares By
Owner, where rentals occur all the time, there’s plenty of evidence that the opposite

might be true. Timeshare rentals should actually drive timeshare sales. Once
owners learn more about timeshare rentals, the question changes from “Why would

anyone buy a timeshare” to “Why wouldn’t they”?
Timeshare companies should be benefiting from the same growth loop validated
by companies that have seen tremendous success in rentals, in that demand drives
supply. That’s when a customer engages with the product and enjoys it so much that
they want to become a merchant. Here’s an example. Timeshares By Owner books a
renter. The renter loves their stay, speaks to the host ad sees opportunity. The renter

buys a vacation home so they can advertise their timeshare themselves.
Based on this model, a renter should more easily convert to a timeshare owner than

someone cold to the product. Despite timeshare being the first sharing economy,
that’s generally not the case today. In fact, most “renters” are deemed bad prospects,

and the majority of sales and marketing efforts are done through mandatory
presentations attached to an extremely discounted stay, or increasingly, through

existing owners.
So now it’s just a matter of embracing the opportunities. The opportunities exist
