DISNEY KEEPS ON INCREASING
PRICES, BUT THE PEOPLE KEEP
PAYING
That is precisely the reason why the rates keep increasing to go to Disney World. It was just announced
that an annual pass without blackout dates now costs $899. Single-day tickets are now as high as $159.
Parents from all over Florida were venting about Disney on social media, especially with the “Walt Disney
World News Today” site. The average Disney Passholder was not feeling the least bit magical about hikes
of up to 20% and they were not using very Disney-like language. Some people that had purchased passes
in the past were now saying, “They were done with Disney!”
The problem is, Disney is OK with that, and in fact, Disney is trying to drive some people away. Disney
wants tourists, such as a family of four who will stay for five nights and drop $5,000 on a package that
includes hotels and meals and character meet-and-greets, and that’s in the off season. At Christmastime, it
will easily cost a family of four $10,000. Disney is raising prices for one simple reason, and that is because
it can. In fact, Disney has proven it can raise prices over and over and people will keep paying. Last year,
after another round of price hikes, attendance rose yet again at the Magic Kingdom, according to the
Themed Entertainment Association to more than 20 million people. That’s bigger than the population
of several countries, and that’s just at one of Disney’s four parks. Disney can’t seem to raise prices high
enough to keep people away.
“But Disney used to be family-friendly!” people say. It still is at the park itself, but above that, it’s investor-
friendly and CEO-friendly. It isn’t a nonprofit. It’s a billion-dollar corporation with $4 billion profit in 2018
alone. If you think Disney exists to make your family happy, then their marketing department has done its
job. Yes, Disney is masterful at making magical moments, but that’s merely a means to an end, and that
end is money. As long as the park keeps producing a product families crave (Star Wars is coming soon), it
can keep increasing prices.
There is, however, one potential pitfall. One reason people are willing to pay so much money is that they
have fond childhood memories of Disney. If kids don’t go today because their parents aren’t willing to
swap car payments for theme park tickets, they won’t have that nostalgia factor motivating them as adults.
It probably means more and more kids of future generations will not have the same love. It also turns into
a “welfare class” situation in that only people of wealth will be able to go the Disney Parks. However, as
long as the parks are geared toward high spending visitors and they keep going, prices will keep soaring
