During the ceremony, speaker after speaker who had the opportunity to mount the podium to say a few words described the late monarch variously as very humble, generous, amiable, honest, hardworking couragous and a man of integrity who was also a quintessential Christian. Wike, in an emotionally laden tribute said the monarch was one of those who against all odds identified with his political aspiration when he first vied for the office of the Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in 1999. Speaking at the variety night of tributes, Wike who ensured the State Government gave the monarch a befitting funeral, said he remains grateful to the late Apiti of Rumueme because of the monarch's tremendous contribution to his political growth, particularly at a time when his community Rumueprikom could not be reckoned with politically in Obio-Akpor LGA. “I am emotionally touched because he supported 5

me in 1999, when nobody thought anybody from my community will be something. He stood firm for me to be chairman of Obio-Akpor. I had nobody, but he stood firm and I became chairman. And that is how I grew to be where I am today.” He added, “There is nothing I will do today that I will say I have done enough for the contribution of this man to my life, to this State. He has fought for this State very well. He has fought for the Rumueme community.” Wike said the late Nyenwe-Eli Omunakwe Nyeche Nsirim, was one of the most venerated Rivers State leaders, whose profound legacy to him and the state at large, will always be remembered. The governor said he was honoured and blessed to have known Nyenwe-Eli Omunakwe Nyeche Nsirim, whom he described was a man of character and integrity, for all these years and was deeply saddened by his demise. He, therefore, urged the monarch's children to emulate his virtues in recognition of his life-long work to better the lives of his people. “I pray all of them who are his children should emulate the life of this man, a giver, a philanthropist. If you have a problem and you go to him, he will solve your problem. it doesn't matter the divide”, he said. In his tribute, former Rivers State governor, Dr. Peter Odili, said unknown to many, the late Nyenwe-Eli was one of those who funded the political processes that laid the foundation for the democracy Nigerians are enjoying today. “Rivers State has lost one of her greatest. The void he is leaving cannot be filled because he is probably the last standing founding icon of our dear State. But for the AT THE FUNERAL SERVICE 6 Gov. 10 family, be consoled that you had a royal father that was second to none”, he said. Renowned educationalist and a trustee of the Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE), Emeritus Prof. Otonti Amadi Nduka, who gave the vote of thanks, commended Wike and the government of Rivers State for honouring the late Nyenwe-Eli. Also present at the event were former Senate President, Senator John Azuta-Mbata; former Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudum Nwuche; National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-south, Chief Dan Orbih; Rivers State Chairman of PDP, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, among other dignitaries. Friday, March 21, attention turned to the Secretariat of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers where a special Valedictory Session was held in honour of the deceased Apiti of Rumueme Kingdom who until his death, was one of the oldest serving monarchs in the state. The ceremony which had the most prominent traditional rulers from across the state in attendance led by the Chairman of the Council, His Majesty king (Dr.) Dandeson Douglas Jaja JP and all regaled in their colourful traditional regalia commenced at about 9am. King Jaja who called for a minute of silence in honour of the departed monarch extolled the character and accomplishments of his late colleague and charged his family to uphold his strong legacies. Other prominent traditional rulers also took turns to pay glowing tributes to the deceased. From there, with his remains well placed in a beautifully designed carriage, the funeral trian moved to Mgbuosimini, his matrimonial home also in Port Harcourt, where he was received and traditional rites also performed. Later that evening, there was a Service of Songs at the St. John's Anglican Church, Rumueme. Here, some leaders of the church where he gave himself and resources for years had an opportunity to pay their last respects. Again Governor Nyesom Wike was one of those who joined the family and the congregation in showering encomiums on the departed. The service, like the other events was well attended. The atmosphere was somber all through the evening. The final day that his remains were seen on mother earth began with a lying in-state at his palace before the funeral service. The day was a reality check for the Nsirims that their Patriarch was really gone. In his sermon at the funeral service, the Rector St. John's Anglican Church, Venerable Gabriel S.B. Omoleye, who preached on the topic; " A time for everything and purpose" admonished the congregation to conduct their life in manners that pleased God. Venerable Omoleye declared that anyone who is unable to fulfil God's purpose for his life, will in the end be reckoned as someone who wasted his time here on earth. Dignitaries present at the funeral service were the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi; the wife of the Rivers State governor, Hon. Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, former Rivers State governor, Dr. Peter Odili, his wife, Justice Mary Odili; Rivers State governor-elect, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu; former Senate President, senator John Azuta-Mbata. The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Simeon Chibuzor Amadi; the Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani; National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-south, Chief Dan Orbih; Rivers State chairman of PDP, Ambassador Desmond Akawor among other dignitaries. The service went on smoothly and the late monarch was later committed to earth amidst tears from her closest and dearest. Nyenwe-Eli was laid to rest in his home Palace aged 96. Afterwards, attention moved to the Palace and residence of Hon. Timothy Nsirim where special guests were treated to a sumptuous reception which dragged till late in the evening. By 9 am on Sunday, family, friends and associates again returned to the St. John's Angelic Church for a Thanksgiving Service. The four-day long ceremony was indeed a glorious way to bid farewell to a revered monarch, father, brother, son and associate whose impact in the lives of many would be remembered for years to come.
