Foreword

My heartiest congratulations to “The Beauty of Gongbi” Art Exhibition!

I am pleased to see the gallery full with beautiful artworks which the 38 artists have
meticulously accomplished. I am sure that the viewers will have a wonderful time feasting
their eyes and engaging with their aesthetic senses. It is reassuring to know that art is being
kept alive especially during these unsettling and unprecedented times.

This exhibition shows that artists are a very important stratum of society and they should be
encouraged to continue their work in every possible manner. It is imperative that art be
given a proper chance to grow and to evolve as there is a correlation between art and the
role it plays in shaping a wholesome society. In relation to that, Malaysian Institute of Art is
doing a good job of not only nurturing talents for the creative industry but also caring for
the wholesomeness of the society. This exhibition has helped to put the beauty of gongbi in
the peripheral vision of the public.

The Board of Directors of Malaysian Institute of Art is very supportive of such events
because it provides a bridge between art and the society as well as will invigorate the
artistic scene and give much needed support to the Chinese artist community. It is hope that
more of similar endeavours will present itself in the future.

To end, I would like to commend the organizing team and I wish the exhibition a brilliant
success.

Message

Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) Extra Mural Studies Department is proud to present “The
Beauty of Gongbi” Art Exhibition. This exhibition upholds a veritable mission of propagating
the elegance and essence of gongbi painting to the public. Once known as the aristocrat’s
painting because of its exclusiveness to royalties, the appreciation of gongbi paintings is
now unrestricted and its sophistication has made it a popular style of Chinese painting. In
this exhibition, 49 pieces of gongbi paintings with various themes are presented to bewitch
its viewers.

As the nation was cooped up in the past two years and social activities were greatly toned
down, this exhibition also aims to quench the thirst of art enthusiasts and individuals who
seek refinement and solace in art. It is not to be underestimated what art can achieve
during this period of time. In the words of Pablo Picasso, art washes away from the soul the
dust of everyday life. Life can be a dull and insipid journey without art. Researchers have
found that our mental health can be improved when we engage in art appreciation. It helps
to relieve stress, lower one’s risk of anxiety and depression as well as prevent memory loss.
Thus, we hope that these paintings will be able to contribute to the well-being and enrich
the soul of its viewers.

In essence, MIA is an established art, design and music tertiary education provider to
youths who are inclined to the creative field. However, we do not wish to neglect the
aesthetic sense and artistic mind of the rest of the society, hence this exhibition is an effort
by MIA to develop this aspect and hope that this will be a prelude of more to come.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wan Cheng Oriental Art and all the individuals
who had helped to make this happen. I wish the viewers an enjoyable time at the
exhibition.
Thank you.
