Quilled Heart Box
by Helen Pierce

I was looking through my resource file, searching for a black and white design that I could use to print
out for a baby shower, on which each lady could write her name and the city, state and country in
which she was born. The subject of the devotional that I planned to give at the party was: “Where in
the world did you come from?” So the heart image that I found seemed to go along well with the
devotional that I had prepared.

It was fun to read aloud the birthplaces of each of our dear friends aloud just before I gave the
devotional, and the ladies were very interested in discussing where each had been born. It just so
happened that one of our local ladies was born in the same state of India where our guest of honor
was born! And now, our Indian friend was here in our city and state where her first child would be born.
I proceeded to give the devotional from Psalm 139:1-18, speaking about God’s power in forming and
protecting each one of us, close to His heart, while we were still in the womb.

I liked the design on the paper hearts so much, that I decided to quill one to use for a door prize. I
recycled a round cheese box by covering it with white computer paper on the outside of the bottom
and top sections, and then used a compass to draw round circles, which I cut out and glued onto the
bottom and top of the box to finish them off. I then applied 1/4” Terrifically Tacky Tape to the backside
of the quilled heart and stuck it to the circle on the top of the box. I lined it with a deli paper, filled it
with salted almonds, Scotch taped the sides, and placed it into a little gift bag. After giving my short
devotional, I asked the lady sitting next to me to draw a name from among the paper hearts that I had
collected, and a new friend of ours was the
one who won the door prize! Needless to
say, she liked it very much!

The idea would be equally appropriate for
a Valentine’s Day gift, filled with candies.
It’s so easy to say, “I love you!” to
someone, by our words, our actions and
our gifts.

A new series began in September,
called the “Outside of the Box” Itsies/
Challenge. The definition of Itsies?
They are small, flat embellishments
that are pictures of things interpreted
in quilling – of plants, animals, bugs,
objects and things we use for work,
for sleep, to eat, to play with, things

we see in nature, in our families, etc. A Challenge is defined as a
larger piece of work, more labor intensive: a card; a new
technique in quilling; a combination of another craft along with
quilling; something in 3D, etc. The first of each month the project
and guidelines for that month were announced on the
NAQGmembers Yahoo Group site, as follows:

Sept. – Itsies
Basic Guidelines: - Make one or two flat embellishments in any
shade of black, white (or both), or any shade or pearlized tones
of gray or silver. You may back it with black or white cardstock for
contrast. Use quilling strips of 1/16” or 1/8” width in any length.

Entries Received:
Denise Patron – two: a flower, quilled with 1/8” pearl white strips with a
black border, black inner loops and a black, fringed center; a black gecko

lizard with white spots

Toni Jarvis – one: a foot and slipper of a
ballet dancer, quilled with 1/16” black and
white strips

Helen Pierce – two: a tropical aquarium fish,
quilled with 1/8” white vellum strips - with
fringed, paper-sculpture type fins and tail; a
fantasy bird with long tail feathers, quilled

with 1/8” black strips

Nov. - Itsies
Basic Guidelines –
-make a quilled Holiday poinsettia
with a stem and quilled leaves,
using 1/8" wide quilling strips.
-it can be either quilled in 3D, or
quilled flat

Oct. – A Challenge
Basic Guidelines: A Holiday Greeting Card
-Make a greeting card, depicting your favorite holiday of the year or
some aspect of it.
-Since our group is international in scope, choose a holiday that
your own country celebrates. Give a description of the holiday and
tell why it is your favorite. Use 1/8” wide quilling strips.
-One other complementary technique may be used.

Entries Received:
Toni Jarvis - one: a Rudolph Ornament Card (photo on bottom left of page 2) – Toni writes:

I'm enclosing photos of a Christmas card. The card is an "ornament card", so I'm also sending a photo of
the ornament alone. I've written brief instructions for assembling the card, not for making the ornament.

Christmas is my favorite holiday because it is such a time of togetherness - friends and families try to
gather, if possible. It's a season that brings out goodness in people. It renews my faith in people.

This is a fairly simple Christmas card, but it gives the receiver an ornament as well as your holiday wish. I
quilled a Rudolph ornament, making both sides identical.

Using Printshop, I printed a card, leaving the front page blank. The inside has a greeting and a photo of a
reindeer. The back, which I haven't included, has my information.
I attached mulberry paper to the front. Mulberry paper looks best if it's torn, not cut, and it tears easier if
you use just a bit of water along the line you wish to tear. I use a wet, not dripping, Q-tip. Wet a line, lay
the paper on flat surface and pull apart - it will tear easily at the damp line. You may have to cut some of
the tough strands if they're too long.

To attach the mulberry paper, I lightly spray Elmer's Craft Bond. Glue sticks or other adhesives are just
too much glue and soak through. Smooth in place, working from the center to the edges. I don't mind if
some of the edges aren't completely glued down. But if you want a completely flat piece, you can take a
little Elmer's glue on a pin or toothpick and finish those edges.

Once the paper has dried, attach a ribbon to the ornament. Measure the ribbon to assure that it will be
long enough to allow the ornament to hang in the center of the paper, and have enough to loop over the
top of the card. I tried to think of some fancy way to attach the ribbon to the inside of the card, but I
ended up using a Christmas sticker.

Ribbon Wall Hanging - Instructions:

In following the guidelines, I looked through my stash of wide holiday
ribbons, and came across a roll of wired ribbon, which I had bought at
Sam’s Club. It was stamped with pretty poinsettias and had lovely
gold touches. I thought that the only thing that could be done to
make it any prettier would be to enhance it with quilling!

I first finished both ends, using The Crafter’s Pick Incredibly Tacky
glue, which I used throughout the project. I turned both sides of the
bottom corners under to form a V and glued them lightly in place on
the back; but the top edge I folded under 1/4” twice straight across,
so that I could unfold it after I finished it, to insert a hanger. The top
edge didn’t need glue, since the wire held it in place.

I chose to quill all the shapes that were stamped onto it using 1/8”
wide strips in bright red for the poinsettias and berries, dark olive
green for the leaves, and bright yellow and gold for the stamens. I
quilled the leaves and the poinsettias in an airy, open manner, so that the gold glitter on the ribbon
would show through. I was careful to line up and flatten all the shapes on each side, so that the pretty
gold side edges would show. I used as many strips as were needed to complete the shapes, without
keeping track of the number, since both the petals of the poinsettias and the leaves were all in
different sizes. I made berries of various sizes with tight coils, and enough coils of short lengths of
yellow and gold strips for the stamens to fill the centers. When it was finished, I unfolded the top edge,
put a narrow red satin ribbon on it and re-folded it. Then I cut a piece of chipboard a little smaller than
the ribbon all around and attached it to the back of the ribbon with Provo Craft Terrifically Tacky Tape,
to give it body.

We plan to hang it up in a narrow space that is crying out for just the right touch of holiday cheer!

Accreditation by an organization gives official approval of the work of a member. It shows the world that
a high standard of work and knowledge is achievable and should be expected from those bearing its
name. The process for the Quilling Guild of England is quite straightforward. You must be in your third
year of membership. You send in a fee and apply for a registration number for assessment. (No names
are used.) The work must be submitted by the deadline. It will be returned with the notification of the
results. Certification will be awarded at the AGM (England) later in the year. There are two categories to
complete:
1. Sampler of Techniques (A pre-printed card with required techniques is provided.) and;
2. Design and Application.
One piece is a free choice. If a kit is used it must be included. The second piece must be an original
design. The pieces must include examples of listed techniques. Design sources or working notes must
be included for all pieces submitted. I did not have a job and was going stir crazy . Accreditation was
something I thought about doing and now had the time.
