The Prowl | Perspective 9 By:KaitlynSchoenike With the recent sunsettingof the coronaviruscommitteein theHouse of Representativess, omequestions aboutmaskshavebeenraisedin our school including the following: Masks conceal more of your face thanhatsandhoodsdo, sowhy are masksokay to wear, but hats are not? To start, Nate Perry, District Administratore, xplainssomeof the reasoningbehindthehat rule, ?We are preparing students for life beyond high school, and in most settings, you'renot wearinga hat to work, especiallyin an indoor office setting.? Schoolsafetyis anotherbig part of the hat rule. MikeLovenberg, high school principal, explained, ?we haveto makesure[weknowwhere we?re with] with safety and security? Perry explains, ?Whether it?s new teachers or substitute teachers, people that may not have had a studentin classyet, not beingable to see their face behindthe hoods sometimescan be about security, but also just about forming that relationship-the?I seeyou, you see me.?? Lovenbergaddedto thisby saying, ?I think the big thing is, if we go down this kind of path? students still haveto be engaged. We can?t use[hatsand hoods],to pull down andjust zoneout.? On the other side, masksare still allowedto be worn, mainly for the comfortof thosewhowearit. Lovenberg acknowledges that maskscovertheface,?It doescover a goodchunkof the faceup; up to about thebridgeof thenose. From my interpretationof seeingstudents and staff? you can still tell who theyare, for themostpart.? 10 Perspective | The Prowl Next Year's ScheduleChanges By:RubyGustafson Asthecurrentschoolyear comesto a close, educators and students alike are gearing up for the next academicyear, which promisesto bringa rangeof new changestothe classroom. One of the most significant changes is the revised schedule for the upcoming year. These changes are aimed at providing students with a more well-roundededucation. AccordingtoAmyLewis,Belleville HighSchool'sEnglishteacher,It is not just MelanieNorton,Belleville High School'sguidancecounselor, whodecidestheschedulechanges. "We'realwaystalkingabout what's in thebest interestof thestudents," Lewis says. "Teachers cooperate with one another to make sure students have the best options." "Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Norton, both principals, andI werein onthis.? Due to the retirement of Susette Alsteens next year, some classes are being switched around or dropped. Currently Alsteens teaches English 9, English 11, English 12, Speech, and Intro to CollegeReadingandWriting. Next year, Lewis and Betsy Jenkins, English teacher, will be teachingsomeof Alsteens'classes. Speech and English 12, however, have been dropped. ?I am sad becauseSpeechandEnglish12 are classes that reach a certain population.I also enjoyedteaching Speech,? says Alsteens, "I understandtheclasschangesin the English department and other departments.Changedoes happen for many reasons:budget, interest, need, etc." Lewis agrees with Alsteens that the speech is valuable skills. "Speechis a statestandardfor all Englishcourses, sospeecheswill be included in courses next year," statesLewis. "It just won't be its own course." Lewisis takingover English 9 and English 11, while Jenkinswill teach Introto College ReadingandWriting. ?Nothingin the sense for student optionsgot dropped,?Nortonsays, "You'regettingthesameclasses, its not changingtheir classes, its only switching them to a different block." While mainly the English classes arebeingmovedaround, othersare being changed too. For example, Personal Finance is going to be taught by James Pickett rather thanTeresaGartley. NicoleVespermanisteachinga new course called Academic Success, Erin Treder is teachingComputer Science, and Sara Boutelle and Emilee Balbach will teach Publications.
