DAY 3
VISIT BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham has long shaken off its old,
grim reputation and England’s second
city is now an energetic and vibrant
place to visit. Go to the canalside
restaurants of Brindleyplace for some
wonderful al fresco dining, or the
brilliant Bullring shopping centre if you
feel the need to open your wallet.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens
rival anything in the UK for beauty,
the Thinktank Birmingham Science
Museum is a fantastic place to expand
your mind, while Ikon Gallery is a feast
for the eyes if you’re into contemporary
art. And for the sweet-toothed, try to
make it to Cadbury World – an entire
place dedicated to chocolate!

DAY 4
AVON BOATING

If you’ve had your culture fix and fancy
a bit of exercise, head to Avon Boating
in Stratford, where you can hire rowing
boats, punts or canoes to enjoy and
explore the river.

Prefer to relax? You can also hire out
motorboats by the half-hour, or the six-
berth Mallard boats for longer periods.
An eight-hour Mallard day hire costs
£120, and £150 on weekends and bank
holidays. Plan these trips in advance to
get the most from them.

Try to fit in a fun tour of the
Shakespeare Gin Distillery, which
is inspired by the Tudor period and
features gins flavoured with herbs from
a Tudor herb garden.

your backpacks. Unfortunately, there is only
one entrance, which makes getting in and out
rather awkward.

With ventilation panels at both ends,
allowing air to flow through, and zippable

a major issue. The vents have covers, so can
remain open even when it’s raining. Generally
the tent is fairly low to the ground, which
means less headroom if you’re sitting up,
but makes it far more capable of coping with
strong winds.
