Two Kerry
farms in Quality
Milk Awards

TWO KERRY farms are
amongst the thirteen nom-
inees in this year’s NDC
and Kerrygold Quality
Milk Awards. The awards -
dubbed the Oscars of the
Dairy World - are an annual
national award programme
recognising the highest
standards of excellence in
dairy farming.
This year’s finalists include:
• The Stack Family Farm: Joe
and TJ Stack are tenth gener-
ation farmers in Tralee. The
farm, which uses new tech-
nologies to drive efficiencies,
is home to 80 cows. Originally
a beef and dairy farm, TJ and
his father decided to switch to
dairy exclusively.
•  The Hanrahan Family Farm:
Liam Hanrahan was born into
dairy farming at his family’s
farm in Listowel. The farm,
which has been in the family
since the nineteenth century
has been expanded several
times throughout the years.
Finalists were visited by judg-
es over the last three months.
The winner will be announced
at the awards ceremony in
Dublin on October 2.

Irish consumers: Tackling climate
change is our responsibility

Brands are making real headway in tackling climate change and the race against waste, which is

great, but new research published by the European Milk Forum suggests that Irish consumers

believe that in order to effect real change, the responsibility also lies with everyday shoppers.

The research revealed that just one in 10 people consider their carbon footprint when

purchasing food (for example, the distance that product has travelled to make it onto shelves

for them). Eight out of 10 believe that to preserve

the planet, we need to change “how we consume

and produce food”.

Four out of 10 agreed that Ireland’s dairy sector,

despite its reputation for the highest-quality dairy

products worldwide, has a negative impact on

climate change.

Responding to the results of the survey, National

Irish dairy is lauded as among the Dairy Council CEO Zoe Kavanagh said that the
