GENERAL INFORMATION

WHO WE ARE:

The Cape Tourist Guides Association (CTGA) can trace its roots back to the mid
1970s when a group of persons undertaking guided tours decided to form an
association. Today it remains an association for accredited tourist guides run
by tourist guides. We are governed by the National Department of Tourism in
terms of the Tourism Act 3 of 2014 and fall under the Western Cape Department
of Economic Affairs and Tourism.
The association is membership-based and functions through an Executive
Committee made up of members serving in different portfolios. They give freely
of their time and provide support and advice to members on both CTGA policy
and day-to-day issues. Members of the committee represent the association
and guiding community on various governmental and quasi-governmental
bodies. The Executive Committee members are elected annually at the AGM.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:

CTGA strives to achieve professionalism, representation, integrity and expansion
of the knowledge base within the tourist guiding industry and is committed to
the growth and recognition thereof for the benefit of all its members

ADVERTISING IN THIS DIRECTORY AND ON THE WEBSITE:

The directory is published annually and distributed to members, stakeholders,
tour operators, conference organisers and all other tourism offices including
South African Tourism. The directory provides an opportunity for both members
and advertisers to publish their services and contact details.
Enquiries can be made to the Secretary regarding advertising rates in next
year’s CTGA Directory.
The CTGA website (www.ctga.org.za) also has space for advertising. Any
interested advertisers can contact the secretary for costs and information.
Only one advert per product/type and/or range will be placed on the pages.
Statistics of traffic on the website will be provided on a quarterly basis.
The CTGA Executive Committee reserves the right to accept/reject any
advertisement without any reason being given for their decision.

THE TOURIST GUIDE CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS

A professional tourist Guide:
 Shall uphold the principles of the South African Constitution, especially its

chapters one and two.
 Shall at all times show willingness to provide optimum support and quality

service to all tourists, and will give tourists an opportunity to enjoy or visit
a desired destination.
 Shall in no way discriminate in rendering service to any tourist on any
basis, e.g. colour, gender, ethnicity, nationality, physical challenge, age, etc.
 Shall be impartial, unbiased and positive, and represent South Africa
objectively.
 Shall be suitably dressed and presentable at all times.
 Shall be punctual, reliable, honest, conscientious and tactful at all times.
 Shall be a responsible driver, when driving as a guide.
 Shall carry out the programme/itinerary of a tour to his/her best abilities
and be loyal to the company/organisation that he/she is representing.
 Shall deal with conflict in a sensitive and responsible manner.
 Shall report any incident of injury or death to a nearby tourist authority or
police station.
 Shall be knowledgeable and shall assist tourists and not provide them with
misleading information.
 Shall in the event of not being familiar with, or being unable to provide
information requested by a tourist, consult with the appropriate authorities
for assistance.
 Shall at no time be under the influence of alcohol or a narcotic substance
while on duty and shall refrain from administering any medication to a
client without proper medical consultation.
 Shall never solicit for clients or gratuities.
 Shall be concerned at all times for the safety of the tourist.
 Shall wear the appropriate tourist guide badge and will carry his/her
registration card.
 Shall treat all people, cultures and the environment with respect.

MARINE DYNAMICS

SHARK, WHALE AND ECO MARINE TOURS

We offer five star shark cage diving and viewing, as well as whale watching/eco tours, in the unique
Dyer Island ecosystem of Gansbaai, South Africa. No diving experience needed for cage diving/
viewing. On our Eco Marine trip we do our best to share with you the wonder of the ocean’s marine
big five: penguins, seals, sharks, whales and dolphins. Our on board marine biologists provide an
educational and fun experience.
Fair Trade Tourism certified since 2008, we are making a real difference for conservation and the
community through our environmental project, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and believe that
“Your Choice Makes a Difference.” We are internationally recognised for our white shark research
on population, wound healing, movement patterns and predator movement ecology and pressure.
Daily, we change perceptions and create ambassadors for the great white shark and other species.
We are also invested in saving our endangered African penguin – don’t miss a visit to our African
Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. Open every day, entrance is free with a public feeding time at 3pm.

GUIDE CATEGORIES AND SPECIALISATION

South Africa has many opportunities for tourists to experience a diverse field
of attractions and this requires various areas of specialisation:

There are 3 catergories of tourist Guides:
1. Those Guides accredited to work at a particular site. A site is a limited geo-

graphical area such as a game farm, museum of a defined region such as
Cape Point, The Castle of Goodhope or Robben Island
2. Those accredited to work in a region. In most cases a region coincides with
the political boundaries of the various provinces. It can also be biome. The
biome as a region is very common for Nature Guides. A biome is an area
such as the Savannah or the Cape Floral Kingdom (Fynbos)
3. Those accredited to work nationally. Only National Guides have no
restriction on their movements. They can work across and anywhere is
South Africa.

Within these categories there are further area of Guides specialisation:
 Adventure Guides
 Trail Guides – may carry a rifle and take tourist in an area where there are

potentially dangerous animals
 Specialist interest such as birds, wine, culture, nature
It must be noted that not all these specialist Guides can register their special-
isations with the Registrar of Tour Guides. In the cases where this cannot be
done, these Guides need to register as general Nature and Culture Guides.

It is a legal requirement that all Guides must be registered with the
Department of Economic Affairs and Tourism (DEAT)
