AMAZING LEARNING

RT CLASS

The time children spend in Reception is crucial for their literacy development. Most of the
children start Reception with limited knowledge of phonics, yet by the time the school
year is over, the children progress to blending, reading and writing words and even
sentences independently. Whilst the academic expectations are high, we try our best to
ensure that our students have fun while learning. This week, Reception children were
introduced to their very first high frequency word ‘I’. The children practised identifying this
word and learned how to read and write it. They used playdough to form ’I’ which was
also a good opportunity to work on their fine motor skills. Then, they practised writing it
on their whiteboards and in their handwriting books. Finally, to consolidate their
knowledge, the children went on a tricky word hunt and tried to spot ‘I’ displayed in our
playground.

The reception children have been learning about the ‘Me and My Community’ topic, and
the children talked about their friends. This week we explored the concept of friendship,
what makes a good friend and played some team games. We began our lesson by
singing a ‘friend song’ together and had an interesting discussion on how to be a good
friend. Then, we listened to the story of ‘Lost and Found’ and played ‘Bear Hunt’ with our
friends. For our activity, we sorted out the similarities and differences between a good
friend and not a good friend. It was interesting to listen to the children talk about their
best friends in school and share their lovely moments with their friends. Awesome, RN!

YEAR 2

For English, Year 2 learned about planning their writing by talking and following
instructions to complete a task. They worked in pairs to plan their writing and made a
paper twirl snake by following the steps shown by class teacher.

It was so exciting and interesting!

AMAZING LEARNING

YEAR 5

During English lessons in Year 5, children were introduced to non-chronological reports
and how to go about writing one. They learned to identify key words during their
research, mind-map their findings, turned these notes into sentences and build topic
paragraphs with sub-headings. This culminated in the children producing their own
non-chronological report about a sea creature of their choice. It was a wonderful
process to observe as they went about their work and finally, independently creating
their first non-chronological piece of writing. Amazing learning, year 5!

AMAZING LEARNING

KS2

This week, Year 4 and 5 students were introduced to the topic Kata Nama Am (Common
Nouns).They came out with examples of the 5 categories that fall under the common
nouns.

For the activity, students transformed their comprehension on the topic into a mind map.
They were put into groups of 4-5 students and given 45 minutes to discuss the content
and prepare the mind map on mahjong paper. Students fixed their attention to list the
best common nouns. Finally, they presented their creative mind maps to the whole class.
Everyone had fun during the process of preparing the content and decorating and
presenting the mind map!

PREFECTS

On Friday’s assembly, 9th September 2022, a tie ceremony was done for Year 6 students
who have been successfully selected as prefects this academic year.

These students are:

Dhanyah Varman has been announced as the Head of Prefect, while Liew Yi Xian as Vice
Head of Prefect.

The students received their prefect’s tie and badge during the tie ceremony that was
done by the Head of Primary, Ms. Madeleine. Congratulation to these students! They are
not only the representatives of the whole primary students, but also carry an important
responsibility to be a good example and serve as a role model for other students.

HOUSE CAPTAINS

Let's give a warm welcome to our newest Primary House Captains, from the left Viyohen
(Phoenix), Janice (Falcon), Rouxin (Tiger), Aryan (Dragon). They will be involved in any
sporting activities that take place and cheer on their teams. They oversee guiding and
encouraging the other children in their house as they compete in a range of events.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Mindfulness is a state being present in the moment. Being aware of our thoughts and feelings will help us
to focus attention on our inner processes and experience and the experience of the present moment.
When we can accept it, we will be able to observe and accept ourselves and make meaning to those
thoughts and feelings instead of not acknowledging those thoughts and judging ourselves, could lead us
to avoid doing certain things.

Mindfulness can also help us to address discomfort, pain, anxiety, stress and help us to relax. Therefore,
practicing mindfulness exercises could direct our focus away from certain ways of thinking and connect
with the world around us.

What can we do?
Pay attention - It is difficult to slow down and notice things in a
busy world. Try to spend some time to experience what we are
doing with our 5senses — touch, sound, sight, smell and taste.
E.g while eating our favourite food, take some time to smell,
taste and just enjoy it.
Live in the moment. Try to experience and be open in what we
are doing/going to do. Be open to new adventures, challenges,
things not working out the way we have planned and look for joy
in simple pleasures.
Accepting ourselves - Treat ourselves as how we would treat a
good friend.
Focus on our breathing. When we have negative thoughts, try to
sit down, take a deep breath and close your eyes. Notice our
breathing as it moves in and out of our body. Sitting and
breathing for even just a minute can help.

When waking up in the morning - focus on our breathing and
how our body gradually becomes more active.
While eating – We can take a few minutes to focus and
appreciate our meal and just focus on eating our meal.
Mindful exercise – while exercising we can just focus on exercise

PERFORMING ARTS

Our Music department collaborated with Le Musique Chinese Ensemble to present several Chinese songs
– The new experience left the audiences with new insights, better understanding of the Mid - Autumn
Festival and Performing Arts! Thank you Music department and Le Musique Chinese Ensemble for the
mesmerising performances!

Our very own Tenby Modern Band ‘The Tenz’ performed confidently at Mid-Autumn Festival Night. To them,
it was a wonderful experience collaborating with school mates and performing for people!

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Last week, in Year 8, we were looking at the characters of Holes by Louis Sachar. One of the characters is
Stanley Yelnat’s father who is an inventor. Assuming the role of the inventor, the students in their table
groups developed inventions and persuaded investors to invest in their inventions. In persuading their
investors, each group was required to write and deliver a persuasive speech by incorporating persuasive
tools (AFOREST) convincingly and effectively. Throughout this project, students displayed high
collaborative and communicative learning attributes that deserve a standing ovation from all Tenby SEH
communities.

HUMANITIES

D E P A R T M E N TOur Year 7 Enterprise students have collaborated in coming up with their ideas on how an Enterprise at

home and at school will look like. They have plotted several ideas like making a breakfast for their family,
putting on up a magic show in school and having a friendly club in school to help make the newcomers
adapt to the new environment. They then debated as a team on the best idea to be implemented. The
lesson has contributed to teamwork amongst the students and enlightened them on the Enterprise
process.

In Mandarin class, our students were working in pairs and groups of 3 in creating Mid-Autumn Festival
posters in conjunction with our first-ever lantern night that was held at school last Thursday evening.
From the Legend of Chang’e to the traditional customs, students discussed everything they needed to
know about the Mid-Autumn Festival traditions and activities before designing their poster.

MATHEMATICS

DEPARTMENT

Year 11 students are peer marking for the assessment on the topic “Series" using Save Exams. This is an
effective way for students to understand the breakdown of marks using the marking scheme and to
consolidate as well. Students discuss the distribution of marks for the statement, methodology and
answers by pear marking their assessment paper.

PE DEPARTMENT

In secondary, students are learning about the importance of kicking during swimming. In freestyle, the
(flutter)kick can add up to 10% to your speed when you’re swimming at a rapid speed, if your kick is
efficient and well trained.

The main reason for this is that a flutter kick creates lift for the legs, so your legs will stay high in the water.
The higher the legs, the less drag, the faster (or easier) you will swim. The math is pretty simple yet
impressive, especially over a longer distance. To be able to keep your feet up high without losing energy is
perhaps the biggest gain of training your kick.
In this lesson, they need to get into pairs and collaborate with each other and give feedback on their
partner’s kicking technique and how to improve or make it better.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Dissection, dissection, dissection!

Seeing is believing. Learning biology involves comprehending many abstract and complex concepts. The
best way to learn is to have hands-on experience. Our year 10 biology students had their first taste of
conducting a dissection this week. In this collaborative lesson, the students dissected a squid, removed the
different body parts & identified them one by one. Students showed great leadership skills, dissecting skills,
resilience, and patience in this lesson. They also learned to use dissecting apparatus such as a scalpel &
dissection scissors for the first time.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

This week our Year 9 students had the opportunity to collaboratively work on testing green leaves for the
presence of starch. Through this experiment, students sharpened their lab safety skills and learned to
safely use chemicals and a Bunsen burner. The overall objective of the lesson was achieved as every
group successfully proved the presence of starch in green leaves when iodine changed from yellow to
blue black! Eureka!

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

In the topic of excretion, year 11 biology students learnt how kidneys excrete waste by filtering blood. To
truly understand the process, students had a chance to look at a mammalian kidney. Students worked
together, collaboratively, to dissect and identify the different parts of a kidney.

LANTERN NIGHT

FESTIVAL

You arrive at the drop-off point, the cold nighttime wind whipping around your face as you step out of your car. Inside, a few
students stand dithering around, waiting for a familiar face or just taking a rest before joining in on the festivities. Behind them lies a
pathway lined with tasseled lanterns you recognise from a year before, and a whole other world seems to unfold before you.

This other world is the Lantern Night organized by the school in honor of the Mid-Autumn Festival, or in Mandarin Chinese. The cold air
has transformed, heated by the breaths of people chatting and laughing under the light of the stars. Children run around in circles
while older students squeeze past them excitedly in a dazzling array of traditional costumes and even casual clothes.

A few moments later, the event commenced with an introduction by emcees Xin Thong and Reesha, followed by speeches from our
honorable campus principal Mr. Martin and Secondary Head Mr. Jeff. Subsequently, the night was kicked off by a revered piece
coupled with heart-rendering singing from a local ensemble. The audience was floored by two modern performances from the Tenz,
mesmerised by a captivating traditional fan dance, and energised by the ensemble playing yet another Chinese radio hit.

These events were spaced out by a brief intermission where students headed off to decorate lanterns in the hopes of winning a prize.
Some were customized with fields of carrots and others with complex floral patterns. Amidst smiling faces and scrabbling hands,
these designs glowed to life in the dark of the night, much to the delight of passersby.

The event came to an end after the winners were awarded their prizes and Deputy Head Mr. Ng gave a closing speech. However,
everyone in attendance was given something to take back with them, whether it was the taste of the free mooncake samples or
knowledge of how the famous festival is celebrated around the globe. Families were able to take a break from the hustle and bustle
of their day-to-day lives and do something meaningful together, if only for a few hours. The beauty of the Mooncake festival lies in its
food and decorations, but more so in what those things do each coming year- bring people together who don’t live under the same
roof or even believe in the same things.

Children and adults alike started to head home, but not before a few warm goodbyes to their companions throughout the night. And
no matter what season it is, I like to think that the light from the lantern of the sky will always be there to guide them home.

LEANER'S ATTRIBUTES

Communication is a massive part of one’s life. It is not only restricted to human beings, but animals and
other living things have their own ways of communicating with each other. It is an essential life skill that
comes naturally and may also be developed further in later parts of life.

Communication has no limitations. Speaking, interacting, expressing, emotions, gesturing and etc, are all
different types of ways that we can use to convey a message.

Take humans as example: we already had the consciousness to express ourselves while inside our
mother’s womb. When we are freshly introduced to the world, the people around us try to communicate by
gesturing and by using a language, often to prepare us for more advanced forms of interaction. And as
we grow and meet more people in life, communication will become a major priority that requires heavy
usage in our lifetime.

Communication is one of the most important soft skills that will need to be polished in order to achieve in
society. If you can communicate with different parties in a fluent and appropriate manner, then
communication will be a key stepping-stone for your accomplishments.

I hold the position of the vice leader of Assembly Team, and I am also responsible to send and receive
emails from multiple parties, so communication plays a necessary role in my daily basis. When working in
a team, communication is like a car’s engine, the major part of a vehicle, it is what keeps the vehicle going.
So, if there is an absence of communication, everything in the team will collapse and nothing will be
working.

Communication is a necessity in everyone's life. It provides easier methods for living things to understand
and reciprocate feelings and emotions, in different ways which can all be used in appropriate scenarios.

Gaming-What you need to know

3 ways to make gaming safer for your child
1.Talk with your child about gaming. Talk with your child to learn the games they like and the content and features of these. This will
help you to understand more about how your child plays games and how appropriate different games are.

2.Learn together. Use CEOPs resources to teach your child about safer gaming at all ages. For primary age children you can use
Jessie & Friends (ages 4-7) and Play, Like, Share (ages 8-10) resources. Secondary age children can access advice about gaming
online.

3.Set boundaries and safety settings. 'Internet Matters' provides step-by-step guides for putting safety settings in place for each
console or device. Spend time setting these up with your child and make sure they know how to block and report on the games they
are playing. You should also talk with your child to create an agreement for gaming; think about how much time they can spend,
which games they can access, if you will allow in-app purchases and what spaces they can play in. For primary aged children it is
advisable to have them play in shared spaces or in the same room as you.

How risky is in-game chat?
Gaming is often a social activity for children and talking with friends is part of their enjoyment. However, in-game chat can pose
risks such as:
chatting with people they don’t know. This can include adults that are seeking to make contact with children with the intention of
sexual grooming.
inappropriate or unmoderated chat. Whilst a lot of chat is moderated, chat is live and there is a risk of exposure to sexual
language, swearing or bullying.

videos of themselves, moving conversation to a different online platform or to an offline platform such as messaging over phone.
