Welcome Back!

School Bulletin 23: 2022/23

MR MARTIN SHELLEY
CAMPUS PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to school for 2022-23!!

I hope you all had a wonderful end of year break and enjoyed the time with friends and family and are
feeling refreshed and recharged. I must wish a huge WELCOME, to all the new students and parents
who have joined the SEH family, we are thrilled to have you as part of our community and look forward
to seeing you around campus during the year. The start of a school year always brings challenges, and
this is even more true when starting a new school, please do reach out to us with any questions you
might have or suggestions that could make the transition easier.

This promises to be an extremely exciting year, especially as the impact of Covid-19 is dwindling; the
future looks very bright indeed. There is so much going on at the start of a new academic year, I
certainly can’t cover everything, but I will just highlight just some of the wonderful initiatives and
events set for the start of the new year at Tenby SEH.

The Mid-Autumn festival is taking place next week with some very cool activities taking place in
both Primary and Secondary, it is always nice to start the year with a celebration!
Our inaugural Sixth Form cohort have begun lessons and the Sixth Form centre is starting to take
shape, this has been an addition to SEH that I have been very much looking forward to since I joined
the school in 2019 and I am personally thrilled to see it taking shape, around a core group of
amazing pioneer Year 12 students.
The school café “TENBEANS” officially launches on Monday the 12th of September, I do hope you all
can drop in at some point and grab a lovely hot or cold beverage or a delicious snack – the food and
drinks are excellent I can assure you! (I have tried loads!).
The transition for Years 4, 5 and 6 from the Primary block was very smooth, a huge shout-out to
our Facilities Team who did an amazing job moving all the classrooms and moving several classes
around in secondary – it was no small understanding.
Our IGCSE results were excellent once more, improving yet gain from last year! A-A* = 57% up from
55%, A/A*-B = 76% up from 70%, A/A* - C = 88% up from 86%. These are fantastic results and on par
with schools who charge three times our fees – a huge congratulations to all of the Year 10 and
11s and the teachers of course! What an awesome set of results!
It feels like I could continue this list of highlights almost indefinitely, but I know you are all keen to
read on and see what is happening at SEH, so I will conclude with a final Welcome back to School!
Let’s have a brilliant 2022-23!

MR JEFFREY ELLIOTT
HEAD OF SECONDARY

Greetings Tenby Family!

We are extremely excited about the year ahead at SEH Secondary and if the first two
weeks are an indication, we are in for some wonderful achievements and Amazing
Learning! Staff and students alike were both grateful for the summer break after a
busy 2021-22 school year and the challenges of online learning, but everyone is
refreshed and ready to go!

I would like to again offer my congratulations to the 2022 IGCSE graduating class and
their families. Our IGCSE results saw strong improvement across a range of subjects,
with many students receiving 7 or more A* / A grades. These results are putting our
now opened A-Level programme on track for amazing success in the coming years, with
some of our top achieving IGCSE students returning to SEH for their A-Level studies.
As well, I’d like to thank the teachers, whose inexhaustible support, dedication, and
sacrifice made these results possible.

This year please do follow the Secondary calendar, newsletters, and other
communication to stay updated with events in school. We have a range of programmes
being offered both through the International Learning Opportunities for Students
programme [ILOS] and internal activities here in school. In addition, applications are
now being accepted for a range of student committees and clubs. Finally, do be sure to
attend our Mid -Autumn Festival Event on September 15th [if registration is not
already full!] which promises to be a night to remember.
To everyone in the SEH community, I wish you the best of luck this academic year and
hope to see you around!

Communication

Interpersonal communication is the exchange of information between two or
more people. The key difference between interpersonal communication and
other forms of communication like mass communication is interactivity. Mass
communication involves one-way communication between a source—like a
television station—and a receiving audience, interpersonal communication
involves a two-way exchange of information.

Primary School

Early Years - Nursery

The Nursery children have been learning to recognise and spell their first
name. It is an important task, not only for practical things like finding their
cubbies but also because it makes letters and how they work together more
meaningful for them. These name recognition activities use the connection
children already have with their name to learn more about literacy. This simple
train craft was a fun way to make names in a hands-on approach that will also
serve as a visual reminder of how to spell and recognise them. It was a good
struggle for NT children this week.

Primary School

Early Years - Reception

The Reception children have been consolidating their counting skills this week.
To build children’s confidence in counting, we explored counting sounds. We
started the lesson by banging a saucepan and counting the beats. Then we
tried out best to write the number of beats on our whiteboard. For our
activity, we played musical roulette. We went to different stations and played
an instrument based on the number card. For example, number 5 – xylophone;
the children had to hit the xylophone 5 times. Superb counting practise and
music making from everyone in RE class!

Primary School

Year 1

In Year 1 , the children have been identifying numbers from 1 to 10. As a part
of their hardwiring activity, they learned the numbers using different items to
represent them. They used the items on ten-frames, which can support
towards their goal of counting more independently. They enjoyed using the
different objects and now have a better understanding of numbers from 1 to
10. Amazing Learning, Year 1!

Primary School

Year 4

In Year 4, the children have been learning about teeth. They learnt about
different types of teeth and their functions. As a part of their hardwiring
activity, they created a diagram using pictures and modelling clay and this
enabled them to demonstrate the functions of the different teeth. Take a
peep at some of thier amazing work! Good struggle, Year 4!

Primary School

Mandarin Team

Our Year 5 (Beginner) learners began their Amazing Learning Journey in
Mandarin with Chinese Pinyin. They are getting better at recognizing three
parts of Pinyin: initials, finals, and tones. Our amazing learners are eager to
use their knowledge of Pinyin to improve their literacy in Mandarin.
Have a look at our young learners' assigning Pinyin to each Chinese character in
a mini flipped card.

Primary School

Swimming Lessons

During swimming class, the Reception children had some amazing struggles.
They were practising flatter kicks and bubbling in the pool. They and they
were definitely able to improve thier swimming skills. Well done, Reception!

Student Council Update 2021-

2022

As our outreach programme of the year last year, the Primary Student
Council Body teamed up with Toys Libraries Malaysia, a local NGO that
collaborates with communities such as ours to collect preloved toys and books
and then helps to set up such centres and libraries in underprivileged and
marginalised communities and neighbourhoods within the Klang Valley. Following
our donation drive for preloved toys and books held in school during July, the
Primary Student Council Body collected a huge number of toys and books from
our school community. A big thank you to everyone who supported this event!

Primary School

Prefects

With the start of the new academic year, the Prefects’ application and
interviewing process began for Year 6 students. The students were chosen as
prefects are expected to serve as a role model to their classmates and other
Primary students. Their applications were reviewed and students came for
the interview, displaying their confidence and leadership abilities for the post.
The students who were successfully selected for the prefect’s position were
announced during this week's primary assembly. Well done to all students who
took this interest and opportunity! And a special well to Mowrin Islam Arrodho
and Liew Yong Xian from 6T, Dhanyah Varman (Head Prefect) and Tee Xin Yao
from 6E and Liew Yi Xian (Vice Prefect) and Eshen Rajagopal

Secondary School

Performing Arts

We are again looking forward to holding lunchtime foyer recitals, presented by
our talented Tenby String Ensemble. In this photo they were playing many
items, from Baroque to 20th century pieces. We believe collaboration is an
essential part to the integration of Arts at Tenby SEH. When we work
together, we create a better learning experience. We welcome any students
who play the string and wind instruments to join us!

Secondary School

English

This week in Year 9, we were looking at the context of Animal Farm by George Orwell. We were
examining how various historical, social, and literary events and conventions affected the writing.
Specifically, we were looking at the Russian Revolution, Socialism, Communism, Capitalism, Fascism,
Allegories, and Fairy Tales. Students were asked to collaborate to create a short presentation
on each of the above topics.

Secondary School

Financial Humanities

So far this year the Year 10 students have been introduced and exposed to new subjects
including Business Studies and Economics. The students were assigned to identify key terms
critical to financial literacy and then locate the definitions. After a discussion, the groups shared
their definitions with the class. This activity ensures the students understand the essential
terminology of Business and Economics.

Secondary School

Mathematics

Why finding patterns is important?

Patterns are everywhere! From the very simple patterns that repeat with two or three
elements, to repeating patterns with multiple elements and attributes. Students learn to
identify and create increasing and decreasing patterns, to name rules for patterns with words,
numbers, symbols, and variables. Older students learn to record and manipulate number patterns
using tables, charts, and graphs. Learning about patterns provides students with an
understanding of mathematical relationships, which is a basis for understanding algebra,
analysing data, and solving complex mathematical problems.

We find patterns in math, but we also find patterns in nature, art, music, and literature. Patterns
provide a sense of order in what might otherwise appear chaotic. Researchers have found that
understanding and being able to identify recurring patterns allows us to make educated guesses,
assumptions, and hypothesis; it helps us develop important skills of critical thinking and logic. The
knowledge and understanding of patterns can be transferred into all curriculum areas and open
many doors where this knowledge can be applied.

And so, when you see your child building a repeated pattern with blocks, recording a decreasing
number pattern in their math journal, or creating a table of increasing multiples to solve a
mathematical problem, you will know that they are building important foundations for future
learning.

As you can see here, Y8 students are trying to find the pattern of a sequence of numbers to
understand the main approach of finding patterns in real life situations. Also, they are doing it by
collaborating with their friends to nurture communication skills.

Secondary School

PE

During the summer break our excellent athletes Jun Hao, Joe Zhen and Osgar attended a MSSD
GOLF Tournament at Ilsas Golf Club Uniten Bangi. They demonstrated a wonderful effort and
scored very well! Jun Hao won 2nd place in the tournament, while Joe Zhen scored 3rd place in the
U15 category and they are qualified to play in 2022 MSSS tournament! This has happened
because they have shown excellent team spirit and collaboration with others in every lesson in
school that makes them never give up. Well done boys !!

Measurements & Practical Studies

in Physics

The Year 10’s recently experienced their first Physics practical involving the study of

measurement. They learned different techniques to measure length and volume. These are
required experimental skills in IGCSE Physics. Simple things like pushing the test tube into the
water manually turned out to be harder than they thought it would be. Measuring length with
the help of two wooden blocks also proved to be an unexpected challenge. While this might be
difficult to accomplish individually, our students worked together to get the best results. Well
done students for your great collaboration effort!

Science

Why are air sacs so small?

Alveoli are tiny air sacs in your lungs that take up the oxygen when you breathe in and keep your

bod going. Although they’re microscopic, alveoli are the workhorses of your respiratory system.
You have about 480 million alveoli, located at the end of the bronchial tubes. When you breathe in,
the alveoli expand to take in oxygen. When you breathe out, the alveoli shrink to expel carbon
dioxideI.n this activity, Year 8 students were investigating why there are many very small air
sacs in the lungs, rather than a few large ones. They used agar jell to represent the lungs, and
colored liquid to represent oxygen in the air. Very interesting, isn't it? The holes made in the jelly
represent the air sacs in the lungs! The holes in the jelly are an analogy for the air sacs and the
dye is an analogy for oxygen. This activity is designed to improve the student’ understanding
through visual analysis. Here is some amazing learning and collaboration experienced the Science
class.

Field Trip - Nottingham University

On 1 September 2022 sixty-seven Year 11 students, five Year 12 students and six Science
teacher went on a trip to Nottingham University for a Workshop called “Why did the elephant
cross the road?”. The workshop was part of the Merdeka Lectures conducted by the
Engineering and Science Faculty of Nottingham University. Dr Marina, the host of the program
greeted our students at the Foyer of the Trent Building and gave a warm welcoming speech to
our students. Our students joined the digital wildlife conservation game research workshop and
learned the impact of their daily food choices on deforestation and wildlife with Dr Cedric. They
enjoyed lunch at the cafeteria before taking a short campus tour. This was then followed by the
Merdeka Lecture“:Why did the elephant cross the road?” by Dr Ee Phin and Dr Cedric. We
learned how to identify the elephant body language by looking at their ears, trunk and tail, which
can help us gauge their motions. Dr Ee Phin shared her research work and how she collaborated
with the plantation company to conserve elephants in Malaysia. Dr Cedric introduced various
wildlife tracking systems that he used in his research work in South America. The trip ended at
5pm and it was a wonderful learning experience for both students and teachers.

Secondary School

International Sin Chew Competition

During the summer break, 10 of our student representatives participated in the 21st
International Sin Chew Quiz Competition. They undoubtedly made a spirited and commendable
effort where they competed among 1500 participants from Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia. “It
was an invaluable experience as I indulged in the learning journey of reading, collecting and
analysing information from the daily news happening around the world”, said Tsu Roe.

It is great to witness students uphold our learner attributes of ‘Initiative, ‘Cooperation’ and
‘Resilience’. Splendid!

Jessie & Friends
CEOP have released their brand new website, Jessie and Friends for children aged 4-7, their
parents and carers, which aims to equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need
to stay safer online. The website is interactive and helps children recognise worrying, upsetting
or scary situations to reinforce the message to 'tell a grown up'.

Goldilocks
An old but still a very good resource for younger children, Goldilocks is a modern twist on the
classic fairy tale for parents to discuss all things social media with their children. It is free (PDF
download) and there is an activity sheet to go with it. This is a good way to open up those all
important discussions with the children.
