SCHOOL BULLETIN

EDITION 16: 2021/2022

Dear parents, staff, students and
caregivers,

I hope everyone is feeling rested and
recharged after the break, this is a long
half term, and we all need plenty of
energy to ensure we are at our best
until the term break in late April. I know
that Covid-19 is once again at forefront
of many of our minds as cases spike
once more, however all indications
point towards a much brighter future,
with borders opening on the 1st of April
and likely an adjustment to the SOPs in
accordance. The announcement that
we are entering the endemic phase is
also very good news!

I would like to thank everyone for their involvement in the hugely successful
Primary bake sale. Whether you where a contributor, facilitator, or a customer! It
was a lovely initiative, and the students were very happy indeed to sample the
treats on offer. It felt like a glimpse into the past and the way school events
used to run before the pandemic, again I feel we are moving quickly back to
normality.

We have listened to you feedback regarding the issues surrounding the ISP Pay
App and I can let you know we will be moving to far superior App soon – details
will be announced next week, but I can assure you it will be a significant
improvement.

Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy the newsletter!

Mr Martin

MEET MRS MADELEINE

Hello Dear Tenby Family!

Well, we have had some fun since our last
newsletter. The first live primary assembly
in a couple of years, a great bake sale, and

Book Week too, with lots of dressing up
and Books in Jars. Maths week is fast

approaching with more fun activities for
the children to complete and other
celebrations too!

Have a great week, stay safe
Best Regards:
Mrs Madeleine

MEET MR JEFFREY

Greetings from SEH Secondary!

The first couple weeks of school
following the mid-term break have been
extremely exciting, with several dynamic
activities taking place around campus.
For example, the International Day of
Happiness was organised by the Student
Council and had students designing
their own masks to wear around
campus. The International Learning
Opportunities for Students [ILOS] are
continuing with the Film Festival and I
am a Scientist Programme, which has
had students conducting an
environmental assessment of plastic
waste around the school. Moving
forward we are very much looking
forward to Pi-Day this coming Monday
and encourage students to bring some
money, as there are sure to be many
delicious treats!

It was also great to have such a high turnout during the Year 9 Options Evening event
this past Thursday. During the event all subject teachers were able to explain all about
their IGCSE subject and the dynamic future pathways available to students in that field
of study following their educational journey. The event was complimented with IGCSE
taster classes for Year 9 students, who will now begin the important task of deciding
their subjects for next year.

Finally, it was fantastic to have the PTA on campus this past week and share many
exciting ideas about developments currently ongoing at school and activities planned
for later in the year. The past two years have hindered the ability of our amazing PTA to
be involved in the school and everyone is extremely excited for what the future has in
store at SEH.
That is all for now. As always, please stay safe and have a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,
Mr. Jeff – Head of Secondary

This Week in Early Years

While exploring the IEYC topic
‘Imagine That!’, Reception students
learnt about various painters and
explored a wide range of painting
techniques. The children looked at
‘Shimmering Substance’ and ‘Autumn
Rhythm’ by Jackson Pollock and
engaged in a discussion regarding
these pieces. Inspired by the works of
Pollock, the children enjoyed
expressive arts and design activities
in which they used techniques similar
to action painting. They imitated the
drip technique by painting with yarn
dipped in paint and they also
painted with spray bottles. Fantastic
work, Reception!

This Week in Year 2

For IPC this week, the children got better at recreating a
famous artist's painting. The famous artist they learnt
about was Giuseppe Arcimboldo. They chose one of the
four seasons and used natural resources to recreate their
own version of the artist's paintings. Such creativity and
effort the children exhibited in recreating their
masterpiece.

Fantastic, exceptional work as always by our wonderful
students of 2N!

Agama Class

Dear Tenby SEH family,

we are delighted to have the new enrolment for Agama class, and it has
been for almost two months of having these wonderful students for the
lessons. In Agama class we have so many lessons that we need to
explore and learn. But of course, we are starting with the basics to
strengthen our foundation in Islamic studies.
Let’s look at of what are some of the lessons that we are learning
throughout the lessons. Started knowing the about the background of
Islam, learn about the Beloved of Prophet Muhammad SAW(PBUH), we
are moving forward to learn the important lessons of Islam which are
Pillars of Islam and Pillar of Faith. And of course, we need to explore
and understand each of the pillars. Good news! We are now learning
the ways to perform our Wudu (ablution) and the other rules.

Not only that we also learn about the important event that happened in
Islamic calendar that is Israk and Mikraj! The students are making their
own poster to represent the stories happened during the event!

We are looking forward to learning more about Islamic studies for the
upcoming lessons!

Phoenix has taken the throne and left Tiger far behind
with leading score of 14834, While Falcon was only 2
points apart from Phoenix as the second, Tiger has finally
retrieved from his victory and placed himself at the decent
third. Finally we have Dragon who was 10 points apart

from Tiger and descended to the last place.

Sport during PE

2N did an excellent job! After a few weeks of instruction
on how to serve in tennis, they are now able to serve with

grace and accuracy. They had a good struggle in
practicing, and it is getting better.

Tenby Book Week

This week in Primary, students and teachers celebrated
Book Week. Wizards, witches, princesses, princes, super

heroes, and so many other characters came in full
splendour. The event concluded with a parade during
which the students and teachers proudly showcased their
costumes. It was a simple but memorable Book Week

celebration!

The year 2E students really waited for this week to dress
up in their favourite book character. They took a lot of

effort to create handmade props for their attire.
Well done 2E!

SEH- Primary Eco
Committee

We believe that teaching children about our changing world and how to preserve
and protect our environment is incredibly important.

We all need to ensure that all children are well-informed. We must imbue them with
passion to protect the planet, and help them to live happier, healthier, kinder lives

Hello, my name is Viyohen Vinayagamoorthy, and I am the chairperson of the Tenby Setia
Ecohill Primary Eco Committee. Here's a quick rundown of my background:

I am in fifth grade and will be eleven years old this year. My family consists of four
individuals. I consider myself fortunate to be the youngest in my family. Crimson red is my
favourite colour. Then there's Red Bean Mooncake, which has always been my favourite

food.
Playing video games and setting up fish tanks have always been two of my favourite
pastimes. Speaking of aquariums, I have a 12-gallon aquarium in my front yard which is a
home to my pet Betta fish. Macho is his name, and he is a shiny blue colour. My Saturdays

are devoted cleaning his tank every two weeks.
Most of my time is spent completing homework, but when I do have free time, I like to read
my favourite collection of novels. Stuart Gibbs' Spy school book series and Top Gear motor

mags are two of my favourites.
I'm ecstatic to be a part of this community working to make improvements and raise

awareness among students about the environment

Perfects'

Last week, our prefects participated in a bake sale fundraising event
organised by the school. They were assigned the task of assisting in selling
cookies and cupcakes donated by parents. They worked hard and did a good
job with their duties. Their participation at the events has greatly contributed

to the event's success. Excellent work, prefects!

Staff of the Week

Ms Yana has been working in Tenby SEH since the school opened and is a
linchpin in the success of the school. She is our wonderful Primary secretary,
but she not only keeps me (Ms Madeleine) in check and organises my day, she

looks after Mr Jeff in Secondary, too.

Did you know that Ms Yana’s favourite colour is white, which means purity,
simplicity and everything that is good and right?

I think Ms Yana has a bit of a sweet tooth as she says her favourite foods are
chocolate and yoghurt, and I think she is quite fond of a Starbucks too!

She grew up in Johor with her Mom, Dad and siblings. There are 3 brothers
and sisters and Ms Yana is the eldest.

I bet you didn’t know that Ms Yana has a great sense of humour and can’t
control her laugh? She has been known to almost choke on her drink while

laughing, so don’t tell her a joke in a restaurant!

She really is a super colleague and part of our Primary Team, we all love her
dearly

Algebra magic square

Magic squares have fascinated mathematicians for centuries.
The earliest known magic square was a 3 by 3 one recorded
around 2800 BC in China. Since then, many people in many
nations have enjoyed, studied, and recorded magic squares.

Working on magic square puzzles builds mental math skills.
Students need to make sure each row, column and diagonal
add up to the same sum. As a result, they need to be flexible
with their thinking about numbers and how they combine with
other numbers. Students will begin to see patterns in how

numbers fit together.

The Year 9 have done with their topic on Algebra about
Equations, rearranging formulae, and making sense of algebra.
One of their Amazing Work is to complete a 4 by 4 algebraic
magic square. Students, in pairs, need to use problem solving
skills and logical reasoning to decide which algebraic terms will
fit best in each position on the grid. Many good struggles as we

get better every day. Amazing Work Year 9!

Science Department - Chemistry

Chemistry is king when it comes to making science cool.
Chemistry experiments are a great way to get students excited

about studying chemistry. The year 11 students were busy
conducting experiments on the process of titration. It involves
the slow addition of one solution of known concentration (called
a titrant) to a known volume of another solution of unknown

concentration (called analyte) until the reaction reaches
neutralization. This experiment enhanced students' skills and
knowledge, which are necessary for them to excel in Chemistry
0620 Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Here are some pictures!

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of
five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court.
Players compete with the primary objective of shooting a
basketball (approximately 9.4 inches (24 cm) in diameter)
through the defender's hoop (a basket 18 inches (46 cm) in
diameter mounted 10 feet (3.048 m) high to a backboard at each
end of the court), while preventing the opposing team from
shooting through their own hoop.
A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the
three-point line, where it is worth three. After a foul, timed play
stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical
foul is given one, two or three one-point free throws. The team
with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation
play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play
(overtime) is mandated.
Players advance the ball by bouncing it while walking or running
(dribbling) or by passing it to a teammate, both of which require
considerable skill. On offense, players may use a variety of shots –
the layup, the jump shot, or a dunk; on defense, they may steal the
ball from a dribbler, intercept passes, or block shots; either
offense or defense may collect a rebound, that is, a missed shot
that bounces from rim or backboard. It is a violation to lift or
drag one's pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to
hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling.

House Points

Recent changes in the house point records have recently come to light and the
results are beyond surprising.
Judging from the Red house’s position in the previous update, they didn’t have much
of a vantage point. However, they have since overtaken every single one of its
opponents in a swift turnaround of events and are now in the lead with 2175 points.
The Blue house has unexpectedly taken a tumble with 2132 points after weeks of
consistently forging ahead. Following close behind, The Yellow house is still taking
pride in its former triumph by coming in 3rd with 2129 points and the Green house is
working its way back up with 2042 points.
The individual year groups have delivered satisfactory results, as Year 7 has
gathered 2117 points, Year 8 has achieved 2194 points, Year 9 has attained 2160
points, Year 10 has gained 1487 points and Year 11 has earned a commendable 520
points.
Although the tables have turned in an unanticipated battle against the Blue and
Red Houses, we must not make the mistake of thinking that this is the only surprise
left in store for us. As the saying goes, from a great pride comes a great fall.

Congratulations Zhi Hang

Congratulations Zhi Hang on receiving your
certificate!
We are extremely delighted and proud of
Zhi Hang in Year 11 who last year won the
Cambridge Top in the World for IGCSE
Mathematics. Zhi Hang scored a perfect
grade on both of his Mathematics papers, a
rare achievement only accomplished by a
select few students during IGCSE exams last
year. We caught up with Zhi Hang to ask him
the secret to his success:
“It wasn’t anything to creative or imaginative
really. I have always enjoyed Mathematics
and maintained strong study habits during
all years, not just during IGCSE study. I
revised a lot of past papers and only used
the mark scheme after trying my best on all
questions. I also had quite a bit of time at
the end of both IGCSE exams, so I was able
to use that time wisely and double check my
answers”
Congratulations Zhi Hang and best of luck
with your remaining IGCSE exams!

Teacher Spotlight

Ms. Vetha joined Tenby SEH in 2017 as a mathematics and science teacher.
She has then become more active in the science department, teaching
science and physics and has led the secondary science department for two
years before beginning her journey as the school’s Cambridge Exams Officer
in the year 2020. It is a role that she enjoys so much because the most
fulfilling part of being a teacher for her is guiding students with their
examination as it has a lifelong impact on them.
When not working, Ms. Vetha enjoys long drives. Driving without a
destination merely to enjoy the journey is her favourite activity. When not
driving, she watches movies. If she hadn’t become a teacher, she would have
probably become a cinematographer or a screenplay writer. Ms. Vetha loves
reading and writing too. She has written many short stories in Tamil and have
published a few in local magazines and newspapers.
To her, amazing learning is when her students make connections on how the
science that they learn in the classroom applies to their daily life, by thinking
scientifically. She often let her students explore a topic beyond the textbook,
look at big ideas around them and connect it to the underlying concepts. Ms.
Vetha believes that this top-down strategy helps them in becoming better
thinkers.
Ms.Vetha’s favourite learner attribute is thoughtfulness. She wants her
students to be kind to themselves and others. She believes that students learn
better when they teach their peers and this simple act of helping others
learn can be a first step in becoming a kind adult who can have greater
impact to the society in future. Ms. Vetha’s message to her students is just
that – be a thoughtful leaner. Be kind to everyone. It does not cost anything
but will only be rewarded with kindness in return

“Ms Vetha is an extremely nice teacher. She helps us to explore and understand important concepts in
science.” – Giing Ng

“Ms Vetha is a teacher that makes learning interesting but also makes sure we get good grades.” – Ji-En
Goh

“Ms Vetha is a responsible teacher.” – Lim Vee Shen
