New location, same spirit
drives Cornwall Children's
Christmas Fund

By Noble Todd Hambleton

It’s that day each year in Cornwall when it seems like the
whole city is pitching in.

The Children’s Christmas Fund had its culminating event
Friday, distribution day, for families that registered for the
Christmas baskets that had plenty of food and lots of toys
handed out.

“I can’t say enough good things about the volunteers – they
step up and get it done... it’s an amazing group and they do it
with a smile,” said Terry Muir, board member with the
Children’s Christmas Fund and president of the Optimist Club
that’s been heavily involved with the annual effort on the toy
drive side for a handful of years.

Muir estimated there were about 250 volunteers involved this
time around, and there was lots to be done – and long before
Friday.

34th Signals Regiment completed its 29th year –
Radio Station Santa, North Pole

at the Shriners Hospital for Children (Canada), Montreal

By Noble John Grow

Started in 1990, with the goal of setting up a portable radio station, on site at the Shriners
Hospital of Children (Canada) in Montreal. The goal was to provide patients of the hospital
the chance to speak to Santa Claus at the North Pole.

Santa Claus has the assistance of a radio operator at his location, handling communications
and North Pole activities. With his list of children, Santa, knows the names, where they are
from, if they have siblings, pets, or something special in their lives. He calls each child by
name, and has a conversation centered on the life of the child. At the end of talk, there is
no doubt that they spoke to the real Santa at the North Pole. Some of the children, who’s
condition makes its hard to communicate with Santa, have smiles and glimmers of hope
and happiness. One patient, Luka, waited for 2 months for this day to arrive. His young
age, and his condition, did not stop his enthusiasm, and interacting positivity with the mem-
bers of the 34th Signal Regiment.

The hospital staff were very excited, and supported of our efforts. We are also invited back
to provide future communication support in the coming year(s).

Members who set-up and supported this 1 day operation were; W.O. Ashley Csenar,
Pvt. Jessie Berube, Pvt. Alexander Azevedo, Sdt Serge Dube and Noble John Grow (712
Communications Squadron veteran & Shriner Hospital volunteer) Santa Claus was played
by Noble Wayne Houlzet.

East-West Shrine Bowl Jan. 2020

The East-West Shrine Bowl is the oldest collegiate
all-star game in the nation. Since 2012, it’s been
played right in the Bucs’ backyard, at Tropicana
Field in St. Petersburg. The East won the game
31-27.

The Nobles from Kora and Karnak started out the
event by tail-gating in Tropicana Field’s parking
lot. The fellowship and good times with friends
are part of what the Shrine is all about.

The history of the Locomotive C.P.R. #285

By Noble Leonard Windslade

I called a meeting in my office with our Divisional Master Mechanic, Ray
Christie, also a member of Karnak Temple, General Foreman of West
Toronto Locomotive shops, Doug Kavanough and the draftsman from this
office. We decided that we could build a model of the first “Locomotive”
built in the C.P.R. Delormier shops prior to the opening of the new Angus
Shops in Rosemont.

At this meeting, we contacted Harold Coppin, Traffic Manager of the Gen-
eral Motors, Oshawa, who being a member of Ramses temple and a good
friend of mine, explained to him what we had in mind and if he could help
us out, he advised that the company had a surplus school bus that might
suit our purpose. We advised him that all we needed was just the chassis
and he said he would get back to me.

Mr. Coppin advised that we could purchase the chassis for $1400.00 if we
would remove the body with our staff at West Toronto and return the same
to the General Motors Plant in Oshawa.

During the month of July 1959, the then Director, Noble Charlie Douglas Charlie Douglas was advised that we would build the “locomotive” and
made an appointment to meet the Superintendent of Motive Power and purchase the chassis from General Motors. He gave us the approval to go
