Alberto Tan Dear Nobles and Ladies,

Potentate As we continue to share the impact of this Covid-19 virus, I can only bring the same
sentiments as before. We can only do our share to help flatten the curve by continued social dis-
20 POTENTATE 20 tancing and wearing of masks. Let us try to stay indoors and go out only when it is really neces-
sary. We have already lost some of our friends and family members and can only hope for the
urgent development of a vaccine for this dreaded virus.

Our first ever Karnak Virtual General Stated Meeting was held last September 23rd, 2020 a great
success I would say, considering we never have any experience holding one. There were 44
Nobles who joined us in the comfort of their homes while another 16 Nobles were present at the
hall.

At this Virtual meeting, we have balloted 7 new members. These will add to the 7 previously ac-
cepted and awaiting initiations for a total of 14. We also balloted on the re-affirmation of the Build-
ing Development, as a follow-up for the vote on December 11, 2019.

There will be an on-site as well as virtual Fall Ceremonials in short form to be held on Dec. 9th,
2020, to be conducted by our Chief Rabban, Noble Len Finnamore. Added to the balloted members
are 2 new applications, which will be balloted on the same evening. Again,
depending and strictly follow government regulations on safety and meeting restrictions for this
to happen.

Karnak Shrine Units and Clubs are invited to participate remotely as a group, if possible, without
neglecting the allowed number of person per location as well as the social distancing and wearing
of masks, for a better audience participation in fezzing of the candidates.

This pandemic unfortunately continues to have a tremendous impact on Shriner events
including that I and Lady Juliette, have planned for the year. All visitations so far have been can-
celled as well as our regular fundraisers. Hall rentals were almost nil after the start of lockdown
in March. Santa Claus Parade has already been cancelled by the City of Montreal and probably all
other cities that we participate.

In less than 2 months, we will be electing the new officers of Karnak Shriners to lead us in 2021.
Karnak is currently seeking nominations for Treasurer and Recorder. Hoping that the conditions
in the new year will be much better compared to 2020 so we can have the fellowships, fundraising
and other activities we enjoy.

In closing, please stay safe and well at all times. It is better that we confine to our home for now
and share the health benefits later.

UPDATE!!!

The scheduled December 9, 2020 General Stated Meeting, 2021 Budget Presentation and Approval, Balloting and
Initiation of Candidates and Election of 2021 Karnak Divan was a great success. It was attended by 64 Nobles.

While meetings are still prohibited in the Red Zone, the Nobles attended the Virtual Meeting in the comfort of their
homes, Nobles Len Finnamore and Ryan McLaughlin were elected to represent Karnak Shriners at the 147th Imperial
Sessions of Shriners International in Houston, Texas on July 4-8, 2021.

Four (4) Candidates, namely Brothers McGrevy Abelard, Mark-Andrew Beguia, Graham Edward Midgley, and Jean-
Pierre Trudel, were Balloted and later join the rest of the group, Vatche Baskalian, André-Pierre Doré, Daniel Galleti,
Sam Gonthier, Philippe Gros, Karim Kahalé, Marc-Antoine L’Heureux, Janson Quessy, Karim Simonyan, and Ovidiu
Mihai, Vingheac who were previously balotted for and accepted, for a short initiation to the Mystic Shrine conducted
by Noble Len Finnamore. We welcome these fifteen (15) new Nobles to Shrinedom!

Also Nominated and Appointed were, Noble Michael Carruthers, Ill. Sir John McDonald and Alberto Tan as Trustees
for a one-year term, Ill. Sirs Gilles Dubé, Norton Paish, Barry Schreindorfer and J.B. Djigounian for Finance Advisory
Committee, and lastly, Porter Hetu International (QC) Inc. as our Auditor.

The incoming Potentate will inform the nobility of the time and place of the Installation Ceremony scheduled for
January 9, 2021.

Again, a heartful congratulations to all! Keep safe, follow the government regulations on Covid-19 prevention and
hope to see you all in the near future.

Potentat Alors que nous continuons à subir l’impact de du virus Covid-19, je ne peux qu’apporter les mêmes
sentiments qu’auparavant. Nous ne pouvons faire que notre part pour aider à aplanir la courbe
20 POTENTATE 20 par la distanciation sociale continue et le port du masque. Essayons de rester à l’intérieur et sortir
seulement quand c’est vraiment nécessaire. Nous avons déjà perdu certains de nos amis et
membres de nos familles et ne pouvons qu’espérer le développement urgent d’un vaccin contre
ce virus redouté.

Notre toute première assemblée générale virtuelle de Karnak a eu lieu le 23 septembre 2020, ce
fut un grand succès, je dirais, étant donné que nous n’avons jamais eu l’expérience de tenir une
telle tenue. Il y avait 44 Nobles qui se sont joints à nous dans le confort de leurs maisons tandis
que 16 autres Nobles étaient présents à la salle du Karnak.

Lors de cette réunion virtuelle, nous avons voté 7 nouveaux membres. Ceux-ci s’ajouteront aux 7
initiations précédemment acceptées pour un total de 14. Nous avons également voté sur la
prochaine étape de l’aménagement du bâtiment, à la suite du vote du 11 décembre 2019.

Il y aura une cérémonie à l’automne sur place ainsi que virtuelle sous forme courte qui a eu lieu
le 9 décembre 2020, sous la direction de notre Chef Rabban, Noble Len Finnamore. A cela s’a-
joutent 2 nouvelles candidatures, qui seront votées le soir même. Encore une fois, selon les règles
strictes du gouvernement sur la sécurité et le respect des restrictions pour que cela se produise.

Les unités et les clubs du Temple Karnak sont invités à participer en groupe si possible sans
négliger les règles tout en respectant les règles de distanciation, le port du masque et ce afin de
maximiser la participation lors de l’initiation publique des nouveaux nobles.

Cette pandémie continue malheureusement d’avoir un impact énorme sur les événements des
Shriners, y compris les autres événements que Dame Juliette et moi-même avions planifié pour
l’année. Jusqu’à présent, toutes les visites ont été annulées ainsi que nos collectes de fonds
régulières. Les locations de la salle ont été presque nulles depuis la fermeture en mars.

La parade du Père Noël a déjà été annulé par la Ville de Montréal ainsi que toutes les autres villes
où nous devions participer.

Dans moins de deux mois, nous élirons les nouveaux officiers de Karnak Shriners pour nous diriger
en 2021. Karnak est actuellement à la recherche de candidatures pour trésorier et registraire. En
espérant que les conditions de la nouvelle année seront bien meilleures par rapport à l’année
2020 afin que nous puissions avoir les fraternités, les collectes de fonds et d’autres activités que
nous apprécions.

En terminant, s’il vous plaît rester en sécurité et bien en tout temps. Il est préférable que nous
nous limitions à notre domicile pour l’instant et que nous jouissons des bienfaits de notre santé
plus tard. Dame Juliette et moi-même souhaitons nos Meilleurs Vœux aux Divans nouvellement
élus et à tous le Nobles et leurs familles de Karnak.

MISE À JOUR!!!

L’assemblée générale planifiée pour le 9 décembre 2020, durant laquelle le budget 2021 a été présenté et approuvé,
l’élection des Divans pour l’année 2021 ont été élu ainsi que l’initiation des nouveaux candidats ont été un franc
succès. Il y a eu 64 Nobles qui y ont assisté.
Alors que les réunions sont toujours interdites dans la zone rouge, les Nobles ont assisté à la réunion virtuellement
dans le confort de leurs maisons, Nobles Len Finnamore et Ryan McLaughlin ont été élus pour représenter Karnak
Shriners à la 147e Cérémonie impériale des Shriners International à Houston, Texas sur Juillet 4-8, 2021.
Quatre (4) candidats, les frères McGrevy Abelard, Mark-Andrew Beguia, Graham Edward Midgley et Jean-Pierre
Trudel ont été ballottés puis se sont joint au groupe, Vatche Baskalian, André-Pierre Doré, Daniel Galleti, Sam Gonthier,

THE HOSPITAL GETS A NEW MURAL!

NEWS FROM SEPTEMBER 2020

It’s grand, it’s blue, it’s bright, and it’s beautiful. It’s our new mural! If you have not yet witnessed it up close, we suggest that you do so
next time you come to the hospital.

The project to renew the image began in December of 2019 under the leadership of the hospital's Arts and Memorabilia Committee. The
mural that was there before was aging with time, and as it was a stock photo, it didn’t represent us to its fullest. That is when the decision
was made to host a photo shoot here at the hospital, with our exceptionally talented photographer Roger Aziz. This resulted in many won-
derful images, and selecting only one proved to be a challenge! An internal committee was responsible for choosing several of the photos
that best represented our hospital. The Arts and Memorabilia Committee then presented the Board of Governors with several images, and
together they chose their four favourite prints. A vote by the employees at the Canada Shriners Hospital resulted in what you see as you
enjoy a walk, cycle or drive along Decarie Boulevard.

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the arrival of a new team member –
Kim St. Hillaire. Please join us in giving her a warm Shriners welcome.

With over 15 years of experience in human resources management, Mrs. St. Hillaire has
an excellent knowledge of the public system at both the operational and strategic levels.

She has a Social work and Human Resources experience from Batshaw youth and family
centers and worked for five years at the CIUSSS de l’Ouest de l’Île de Montreal. She was
managing the organizational development and external recruitment services.

Mrs. St. Hillaire has a Master’s Degree in Organizational development from the Université
Laval, she is a member of the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés
(CRHA) and also holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from McGill University.

She is recognized for supporting organizational development and continuous improve-
ment initiatives in rapidly changing environments, through solid communication plans
and collaborative partnerships.

Introducing our Interim Director of Rehabilitation Services

We are proud to announce the arrival of Ms. Maria Centoni within our Senior Management team. Ms. Centoni has
several years of management experience. She has also held various advisory roles and as a member of an inter-
disciplinary team offering specialized services in rehabilitation, continuous improvement, and quality and risk man-
agement. Occupational therapist by profession with a master’s degree in community health, she is focused on
empowerment, healthy interdependence and support in mobilizing teams and stakeholders. In addition to managing
the rehabilitation team, Ms. Centoni has the mandate to establish a new Directorate of Rehabilitation Services. Under
the authority of the Hospital Administrator, Ms. Centoni will carry out her mandate for a period of six months to one
year.

Nous sommes fiers de vous annoncer l’arrivée au sein de notre équipe de gestion de Madame Maria Centoni en
tant que Directrice Intérimaire des Services de Réadaptation. Madame Centoni possède plusieurs années d’expéri-
ence en gestion, tant au niveau de direction et de haute direction. Elle a de plus occupée différents rôles-conseils et au sein d’une équipe interdis-
ciplinaire offrant des services spécialisés de réadaptation, amélioration continue, qualité et gestion des risques. Ergothérapeute de profession avec
une maitrise en santé communautaire, son écoute et ses actions sont axées sur une responsabilisation, une interdépendance saine et un soutien
mobilisant des équipes et de parties prenantes. En plus d’assumer la gestion de l’équipe de réadaptation, Madame Centoni à le mandat de mettre
en place une nouvelle Direction des services de réadaptation au cours des prochains mois. Sous l’autorité de la Direction générale, Madame Centoni
exercera son mandat durant une période de six mois à un an. Nous lui souhaitons beaucoup de succès dans la réalisation de son mandat.

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the arrival of a new member of the executive team – Sophie Thibault.
Ms. Thibault has more than 20 years of management experience, including at the director level in the areas of finance,
budget and accounting management. She also brings extensive experience with organizations within the health and
social service network, including private institutions with specialized populations and mandates. She is known for
her mobilizing leadership, development of continuous improvement projects and initiatives as well as the support
she provides to internal and external partners.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic,
Shriners Hospitals for Children -
Canada made the difficult deci-
sion to postpone all of its 2020
fundraising flagship events in
order to protect the health and
well-being of our patients, their
families as well as the commu-
nity at large.

The news of this decision, how-
ever, saddened our two young
patient ambassadors, Kaleb and
Alab, and they decided to gener-
ate a "buzz" by creating a virtual
lemonade stand. Last year, these
two exceptional patients ran the
lemonade stands at the 9th
Canada Shriners Hospital Invita-
tional... and raised an incredible
$25,000! Even though the 10th anniversary of our annual Golf Tournament has been postponed to August 2021, Kaleb and Alab's goal was
to break their 2019 record this summer.

"Every year, our hospital treats thousands of children, many of who are battling rare illnesses. We both have Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI),
which means that our bones are very fragile and break easily. To date, we have broken more bones than we can count but, thanks to the
amazing team at Shriners, we are getting stronger and stronger! ", explain Kaleb and Alab. Doctors and researchers at Shriners Hospitals for
Children - Canada treat complex pediatric orthopaedic conditions such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), Arthrogryposis, early onset
Scoliosis – just to name a few. These health professionals are continually developing new treatments that allow children to reach their full
potential.

vendant des pots de caramel Fleur de sel. Ce fut une très

the phone and call Ann for help. She will be sadly missed.

Mateo's first surgery helped restore his elbow motion, as he does not have a
normal elbow joint. Once he recovered from this surgery, he underwent surgery
once again to remove his extra digits, create a thumb and bring his wrist into a
straighter position. Having these surgeries "...will help him function better as
he moves forward," said Dr. Goldfarb. The ultimate goal was to create the most
functional and normal appearing hand and arm possible.

Today, Mateo is fully recovered from his surgeries and is just like every other
high-energy 2-year-old! He will have yearly check-up appointments with Dr.
Goldfarb and his team each year, but is not expected to have any more major
surgeries.

We are extremely grateful to have received many reusable masks from nearly 100 Shrine Ladies
from across the country. They are sewing and sending them to us on a regular basis. These ladies
have already made more than 500 reusable masks and continue to produce them to keep us
safe. The ladies have made a point of choosing fabric with fun and colorful patterns to brighten
up the days of staff members and the children we treat. These same ladies are the ones that
have made the 450 reusable gowns that are currently in use in the hospital. Thank you to the
sewing units of LOSNA, WA WA Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies of the Saber (Mazol), Karnak Ladies
Auxiliary, and the following Daughters of the Nile Temples: Sphinx, Al Amira, Oronto, Sakkara,
Athena, Miriam, Sakina, Oasis and Omar from coast to coast!

offert la deuxième journée du cours TRIK dédiée aux instructeurs.

Cours intensif en chirurgie pédiatrique (2017)
Ce cours de trois jours porte sur les principes de base en chirurgie
pédiatrique.

Conçu pour les stagiaires étrangers (boursiers en pédiatrie), cette for-
mation facilite la transition entre la chirurgie générale pour adultes
et la sous-spécialité de chirurgie pédiatrique.Ce cours est approuvé
par le CÉR (Comité d’éthique sur la recherche). Nous avons accueilli
21 participants et professeurs de partout au Canada et des États-
Unis lors de cette activité éducationnelle.

Le premier cours sur la modulation de la croissance au Canada
(2019) a été donné dans le cadre du Rendez-vous annuel de la Sco-
liosis and Research Society. D’une durée d’une journée et demie, le
cours était dirigé par Jean A. Ouellet, M.D., et l’Unité de recherche
sur la colonne vertébrale en collaboration avec le Dr Parent de l’Unité
de recherche sur la scoliose du CHU Sainte-Justine. Le cours met
l'emphase sur les cas pédiatriques complexes des difformités de la
colonne vertébrale. Une importance particulière est donnée à la sco-
liose juvénile, aux difformités cervicales et cervico-thoraciques com-
plexes, de même qu’aux cyphoses sévères, grâce à des discussions
sur des études de cas et de chirurgies en direct. Nous avons accueilli
31 participants de partout sur la planète : Europe, Moyen-Orient,
États-Unis et Amérique du Sud. Ce cours a permis à l’équipe de dé-
montrer son expertise éducationnelle et clinique. Nous avons
présenté avec succès et simultanément deux cas de chirurgie en di-
rect, mettant l’accent sur le concept de modulation de la croissance,
l’une illustrant la méthode moderne Luque Trolley et l’autre le guidage
de la croissance vertébrale antérieure.

Le cours ACO – ACA et COFAS (Association Canadienne
d’Orthopédie – Association Canadienne d’Arthroscopie et Canadian
Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society) (2019) a été présenté au Centre
de simulation des Hôpitaux Shriners pour enfants – Canada dans le

cadre de la rencontre annuelle de l’ACO. D’une durée de deux jours,
cette session de formation pratique a rassemblé plus de 30
chirurgiens ortho-pédistes sur place. Le Centre de simulation a coor-
donné la démonstration de techniques chirurgicales sur des prélève-
ments de greffons de quadriceps. Le tout a été diffusé EN DIRECT au
Palais des congrès aux plus de 300 membres de l’ACO présents.

« Nous avons un grand laboratoire de 305 mètres carrés pour
enseigner et évaluer les habiletés chirurgicales. Sa conception répond
en tout point aux exigences de simulation des procédures chirurgi-
cales. Six tables ajustables et transparentes aux Rayons-X sont
jumelées à six bornes rétractables permettant l’inhalation ou l’insuf-
flation d’un air de qualité médicale. Chaque station est équipée d’un
moniteur LCD affichant l’information transmise par la station de l’in-
structeur. Nous avons acheté divers entraîneurs de tâches, des man-
nequins pédiatriques de basse, moyenne et haute-fidélité pour des
sessions de formation variées afin de permettre des formations
paramédicales et des scénarios de simulation d'arrêt cardiaque ou
autres situations d'urgence », explique Omar Arfa, spécialiste en
simulation clinique au Centre de simulation des Hôpitaux Shriners pour
enfants – Canada.

Dédié à l’éducation, à la formation et à la pratique selon la nature des
activités de simulation et/ou de recherche, le centre de simulation a
l’ambition de devenir un pôle mondial de simulation médicale pédia-
trique, un objectif ambitieux mais cependant bien réel.

« Le Centre de simulation pédiatrique de l’Hôpital Shriners pour en-
fants - Canada planifie la tenue de formations avec l’American College
of Surgeons et la Fédération des Médecins Spécialistes du Québec
(FMSQ). Nous sommes déjà un centre d’innovation en éducation et,
c’est ici que les médecins et chirurgiens orthopédistes du futur se for-
ment et s’entraînent avec la simulation, la réalité virtuelle et la réalité
augmentée », explique Jean A. Ouellet, M.D., directeur du Centre de
simulation pédiatrique de l’Hôpital Shriners pour enfants – Canada et
directeur du Groupe sur la scoliose et les chirurgies de la colonne de
la Faculté de Médecine de l’Université McGill.

L’enseignement et les activités de formation, les découvertes qui dé-
coulent de la recherche et/ou de nouvelles façons de faire mais aussi
la technologie et le développement de partenariats d’envergure, sont
les socles sur lesquels le Centre de simulation de l’Hôpital Shriners
pour enfants – Canada s’appuie afin de se propulser, de signifier son
avant-gardisme et de bâtir sa réputation d’excellence.
