Nobles and Ladies,

Here we are... 2021 and it seems the only thing that has changed for Karnak is its DIVAN! COVID-19 is still running its course but if we
look closely, we can see a dim light at the end of the tunnel. This dreadful pandemic has seriously impeded us from doing what we as
Shriners do best, fundraise, socialize and engage in enjoyable activities. As we continue throughout the year, we must remember that
we CAN and WILL continue to work as an organization helping to improve Karnak Shriners, and additionally, what Shriners stand for.
This pandemic has given us a great deal of time to think outside the box on how we can make Karnak more visible while finding ways
to support our Hospital and its children. As your elected Potentate for 2021 I would like to put a strong emphasis this year on two
areas: increasing membership and improving communications.

MEMBERSHIP – The last few years have been challenging on our membership numbers. If we do not act promptly, we will find
ourselves trying to navigate through uncharted waters very quickly. I believe there may be an easy solution, however, we must work
as a team for the benefit of Karnak and its Shriners. You will hear me refer to a slogan of “25-10-10”. It simply means this; my goal
for Karnak this year is to initiate 25 new Nobles, restore 10 Nobles and to suspend less than 10 Nobles.

To hit the road running, Karnak would like to make it easier for all members to pay their dues. We are exploring ways to make it
possible to pay them on our website. This would assist those who are behind in their dues as well allowing Shriners who have been
suspended to facilitate their reinsertion. During these trying times, the Imperial Potentate is allowing virtual ceremonials to take place
so we can initiate new members into the Shrine. I fully agree! It is not the same as an in-person ceremonial, but we must remember
it’s only temporary - this too will pass. Doing it virtually allows us to immediately bring in new members as they display an interest.
After all, it can only help us with our membership goals.

As Nobles, you play the biggest part in helping our membership. Take a moment at the end of your lodge meeting, whether it be in
person or via zoom, to talk to your fellow brethren about Karnak Shriners and all that we do for our Shrine hospitals and the children.
Explain what being a Shriner means to you, while mentioning the fact that we now offer a new virtual ceremonial allowing their instal-
lation to be done while not having to leave the safety of their home. I genuinely believe there are many Brethren within masonry we
may possibly be able to recruit in joining this wonderful philanthropy.

COMMUNICATIONS – If there is anything good that can come out of this pandemic it will be the learnings of how we can better com-
municate with each other without having to leave the comfort of our home. As stated earlier in this message, we will have a new
website up and running within the next few months. This site will contain up to date information about our Karnak Shrine along with
current contact information for the Divan. A calendar of upcoming events, the different committees, Clubs and Units along with their
respective contacts, status of the new building project and a new and improved way to pay your dues are just a few of the changes
you will see. As your Potentate I will be issuing regular bulletins with updates. These bulletins will be sent out via email and regular
mail for those who do not have access to email. As part of Communication, I would like to say that I have an open-door policy where
Nobles can reach out to me directly to discuss issues or concerns, they may have. I know Lady Marlene will be doing the same with
our ladies. If you have an idea for an event or fundraiser, please speak up and let us know. Anything is possible.

I have been told many times by people with experience that time will fly by in your Potentate’s Year. I plan to do whatever it takes in
this short time to help Karnak and the nobility grow and be stronger and hopefully by the end of my year we will have accomplished
my “25-10-10” goal. Please stay safe! Lady Marlene and I are looking forward to spending time with you all together once again.

From the Desk of Karnak’s First Lady

Greetings to our Ladies of Karnak,

Are you ready to take this walk? I am, as nothing is impossible. 2021 is now upon us and considering the unique circumstances
in the world today I believe it is time to start, “Thinking outside the Box”. As you all know, Karnak has moved into a new year
and has installed a new Potentate, Ill. Sir Len Finnamore. As this is my first communication with the Ladies of Karnak, please
allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lady Marlene, and it is a great honour to take on the responsibility of representing
Karnak this year as your First Lady. We have had some setbacks with the Covid Pandemic but it is important that we keep moving
forward ensuring that our Shrine Hospitals are able to continue to provide the highest quality of care for our children.

My first order of business is to give recognition where it is due. Past First Lady Juliette, we thank you for your dedication to
our cause. It was a rough year in 2020, but I believe that you and Ill. Sir Alberto always put your best foot forward as you
embraced the opportunity to take Karnak Shriners to a place that it has never been before. You have always told the Divan,
“If you can dream it, you can do it”. May you both have success at every turn life takes and may all your dreams come true!

It is known that Shriners believe in family. Although Shriners International is a brotherhood, it is also an organization focused
on bringing families together and promoting their shared values that helps develop the next generation of community and
business leaders. This is done through a variety of affiliated groups for both women and children whose emphasis is on
personal growth, fun and friendship.

As we move forward in 2021 my first goal is to ensure that our ladies have a straight line of communication amongst each
other. Rest assured that all the Divan and Extended Divan Ladies are here to support you and your Shriner in any way, shape
or form. We would like to extend the opportunity for you to put forward any suggestions or passions you may have that we
can use collectively to make our lives fun again. This pandemic has left some of us feeling very lonely and vulnerable, and in
my eyes that is simply unacceptable. Due to circumstances beyond our control our calendar is unusually quiet during the first
quarter of the year. That does not mean we cannot explore other options to keep our minds occupied during these tough
times. As your Divan, we are hoping to set aside one day a month to be able to connect via Zoom. This would give us the
opportunity to sit together, chat and enjoy a beverage of your choice, while simply talking to each other as we would if we
were sitting across the table. Details of this event will be emailed to you as soon as they become available.

In conclusion, I thank you all in advance for your unwavering support. It is amazing how the last six years have passed so
quickly. With your help, I know we can have an exceptional year. We pray for an early arrival of the vaccine so that we may
bring this pandemic to an end and resume our lives as we know it. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the Divan
Ladies directly. Ill. Sir Len and I look forward to the day that we can get together and enjoy life as it was meant to be.

Nobles et mes Ladies,

Nous y voilà... 2021 et il semble que la seule chose qui a changé pour Karnak est son DIVAN! COVID-19 est toujours présente et suit cours,
mais si nous regardons de près, nous pouvons voir une faible lueur au bout du tunnel. Cette terrible pandémie nous a sérieusement empêché
de faire ce que nous, Shriners faisons de mieux, levées de fond, socialiser et nous engager dans des activités agréables. Comme nous con-
tinuons tout au long de l’année, nous devons nous rappeler que nous pouvons et continuerons à travailler en tant qu’organisation aidant à
améliorer Karnak Shriners et en plus promouvoir notre mission. Cette pandémie nous a donné beaucoup de temps pour réfléchir en dehors
des sentiers battus sur la façon dont nous pouvons rendre Karnak plus visible tout en trouvant des moyens de soutenir notre hôpital et ses
enfants. En tant que potentat élu pour 2021, je voudrais mettre l’accent cette année sur deux objectifs : l’augmentation du nombre de membres
et l’amélioration des communications.

ADHÉSION – Les dernières années ont été difficiles pour notre nombre de membres. Si nous n’agissons pas rapidement, nous nous retrou-
verons rapidement en eau trouble. Je crois qu’il peut y avoir une solution facile, cependant, nous devons travailler en équipe pour le bénéfice

au Shrine. Je suis tout à fait d’accord! Ce n’est pas la même chose qu’une cérémonie en personne, mais nous devons nous rappeler que ce
n’est que temporaire - cela aussi passera. En effectuant ceci virtuellement cela nous permet d’attirer immédiatement de nouveaux membres
qui ont un intérêt. Après tout, ceci peut nous aider avec notre objectif d’adhésion.

En tant que Nobles, vous jouez un grand rôle dans le recrutement de nouveaux membres. Prenez un moment à la fin de votre réunion de loge,
que ce soit en personne ou via Zoom, pour parler à vos frères des Shriners de Karnak et de tout ce que nous faisons pour nos hôpitaux du
Shrine et les enfants. Expliquez ce qu’être un Shriner signifie pour vous, tout en mentionnant le fait que nous offrons maintenant un nouveau
cérémonial virtuel permettant leur installation tout en n’ayant pas à quitter la sécurité de leur domicile. Je crois sincèrement qu’il y a beaucoup
de frères au sein de la maçonnerie que nous pourrions éventuellement convaincre de se joindre à cette merveilleuse philanthropie.

COMMUNICATIONS – S’il y a une chose de bon qui peut sortir de cette pandémie, ce seront les apprentissages de la façon dont nous pouvons
mieux communiquer les uns avec les autres sans avoir à quitter le confort de notre domicile. Comme indiqué précédemment dans ce message,
nous aurons un nouveau site Web opérationnel au cours des prochains mois. Ce site contiendra des informations à jour sur notre Shrine de
Karnak ainsi que les coordonnées actuelles du Divan. Un calendrier des événements à venir, les différents comités, clubs et unités ainsi que
leurs contacts respectifs, l’état du projet pour le nouvel édifice et une nouvelle façon améliorée de payer vos cotisations ne sont que quelques-
uns des changements que vous verrez. En tant que potentat, je vais publier des bulletins sur une base régulière avec des mises à jour. Ces
bulletins seront envoyés par courriel et par courrier régulier pour ceux qui n’ont pas accès au courrier électronique. Dans le cadre de la com-
munication, je voudrais dire que j’ai une politique de porte ouverte où les nobles peuvent me contacter directement pour discuter de questions
ou de préoccupations qu’ils peuvent avoir. Je sais que Dame Marlene fera la même chose avec nos dames. Si vous avez une idée pour un
événement ou une cueillette de fonds, n’hésiter pas de nous le faire savoir. Tout est possible.

Il m’a été dit à maintes reprises qu’une année de potentat passe très vite. J’ai l’intention de faire tout ce qu’il faut en ce court laps de temps pour
aider Karnak et la noblesse à grandir, être plus fort et j’espère que d’ici la fin de mon année, nous aurons atteint mon objectif « 25-10-10 ».

Salutations à nos Dames de Karnak,

Êtes-vous prêtes à parcourir cette route? Je le suis, car rien n’est impossible. 2021 est arrivé et, compte tenu des circonstances
uniques dans le monde d’aujourd’hui, je crois qu’il est temps « de sortir des sentiers battus ». Comme vous le savez toutes, Karnak
a débuté une nouvelle année et installé un nouveau potentat, Ill. Sir Len Finnamore. Comme il s’agit de ma première communication
avec les Dames de Karnak, permettez-moi de me présenter. Je m’appelle Dame Marlene, et c’est un grand honneur d’assumer la
responsabilité de représenter Karnak cette année en tant que Première Dame. Nous avons connu quelques revers avec la pandémie,
mais il est important que nous continuions à avancer en veillant à ce que nos hôpitaux Shriner soient en mesure de continuer à offrir
à nos enfants des soins de la plus haute qualité.

Mon premier ordre du jour est de donner la reconnaissance où elle est due. Ancienne Première Dame Juliette, nous vous remercions

avez toujours dit au Divan: « Si vous pouvez rêver, vous pouvez le faire ». Nous vous souhaitons que vous réussissiez tous les deux
dans tout ce que vous entreprendrez et que tous vos rêves deviennent réalité!

On sait que les Shriners croient en la famille. Bien que Shriners International soit une fraternité, c’est aussi une organisation axée sur
le rapprochement des familles et la promotion de leurs valeurs communes qui aident à développer la prochaine génération de
« leaders » communautaires et d’affaires. Cela se fait par le biais d’une variété de groupes affiliés pour les femmes et les enfants où
l’accent est mis sur la croissance personnelle, le plaisir et l’amitié.

À mesure que nous avancerons durant l’an 2021, mon premier objectif est de m’assurer que nos dames aient une ligne directe de

votre Shriner de toutes les manières possibles. Nous aimerions vous donner l’occasion de faire des suggestions ou nous mentionner

En conclusion, je vous remercie toutes à l’avance pour votre soutien indéfectible. C’est incroyable de voir comment les six dernières
années se sont écoulées rapidement. Avec votre aide, je sais que nous pouvons avoir une année exceptionnelle. Nous prions pour
l’arrivée rapide du vaccin afin que se termine cette pandémie et que nous puissions retourner à la vie que nous connaissions. S’il

Shriners Hospitals for Children is pleased to announce Thierry E. Benaroch, M.D., MSc, FRCS(C) as Chief of Staff
of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada. Dr. Benaroch is a pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon who was born,
raised, and practices in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Benaroch has been associated with the Shriners Hospitals for
Children for the past 27 years and he is committed to the mission of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

His previous appointments as Site Director of the Montreal Children’s Hospital for the past 20 years and Director
of the McGill Orthopedic Residency Program for the past 8 years have given him the skills that will allow him to
be an excellent Chief of Staff. Dr. Benaroch is committed to enhance collaboration, collegiately, and communi-
cation among all departments of the hospital. Dr. Benaroch is excited to give back to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children and to improve the care of children who are patients of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada and
throughout Canada. We congratulate Dr. Benaroch on his appointment to this important leadership role.

Many have inquired as to the nature of the Karnak Karpen-
ters Social Club.

Basically, we are a social club made up of singles or couples
who have a goal of raising money to beautify the Center so
that it will be a place where the Nobles and their Ladies
enjoy coming out to social events.

How do the Karnak Karpenters accomplish this?

By putting on social events that are priced so that every
Noble and their Lady are able to attend if they so wish. One
of our biggest events is the summer golf tournament. 18
holes of golf with a cart at Vaudreuil Golf Course and then
back to the Shrine for a great BBQ steak meal. All this along
with prizes for a very reasonable price.

Life membership is only $100/per person.

So, if you have an interest in belonging to a Social Club such
as the Karnak Karpenters contact our President Del Du-
moulin or his Lady Barb or the secretary Steve Roberts or
his Lady Heather or the Treasurer Rick Brousseau or his
Lady Carole.

The MAC’s initial development phase is complete. The YOGA
program (Youth Orthopedic Gait Analysis) has become a key com-
ponent in the care process. As part of this program, patients are
often sent to the MAC prior to surgery. Following a gait analysis,
an assessment by a physiotherapist and a review of the patient’s
medical history, a report is submitted to the surgeon allowing
them to confirm or invalidate the intended surgical strategy. For

cases. However, this service will be implemented over time with the
collaboration of specialist surgeons, physiotherapists, a biomedical engineer and
with the acquisition of new technological resources.

Prosthetics and orthotics
This service should systematically allow the detection of problems related to the
use of prostheses or orthotics when these are not properly fitted. For example,
the MAC team noticed that one of its patients had a flexed knee when walking,
whereas it should be more extended. The team recommended that the patient’s
prosthesis be adjusted to allow for increased extension for a more relaxed and
natural gait.

Scoliosis and spine
The Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada receives close to 3,000 scoliosis
consultation requests a year. The MAC services will allow us to measure the range
of movement maintained or gained based on the type of surgery performed. Most
patients are followed post surgery to track their progress. These follow-ups aren’t
only to assess the results of the surgery, but to understand how the patient’s
walking evolves over the next two years.

Programs in development
Sports medicine
Sports medicine is already a specialty of the Shriners Hospital network. Dr. Thierry
Pauyo, a surgeon specialized in sports medicine at the Shriners Hospitals for
Children – Canada, and Louis-Nicolas Veilleux, head researcher at the MAC, are
both members of the Shriners Sports Medicine Consortium, a program led
by Corinna Franklin, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon at the Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Philadelphia. Dr. Pauyo heads the surgical results component, while
Louis-Nicolas is co-chair of the movement analysis sub-committee. A total of 10
Shriners care centres are members of the consortium. The Shriners Hospitals
headquarters in the United States has officially backed Dr. Pauyo’s sports
medicine program.

The MAC is a key component of the program, especially given that it allows
patients to get back to practicing sports.

Using a dynamometer, the MAC can measure the strength of an injured knee versus
a healthy one following a sports injury. If too much of a difference is detected
between them, the surgeon will ask the patient to continue their physiotherapy
treatments. This approach is effective in testing if the patient is ready to return
to practicing sports, but it’s limited when it comes to determining the risks of
developing a new injury. The Shriners Sports Medicine Consortium will be
implementing a new work method that will use cameras in addition to the
dynamometer. The patient will be asked to perform a series of sports manoeuvres
including running, accelerating, and decelerating, jumping and changing direction
to evaluate the knee, hip and ankle. A detailed report will score the patient’s
abilities for each manoeuvre. A score of 45 out of 50 is required to be green-
lighted to go back to sports. A score between 35 and 44 is considered as being
at medium risk and anything under 35 means there’s still a high risk of injury.

Research
Louis-Nicolas Veilleux, head researcher at the MAC, is also Adjunct Professor with
McGill University’s Department of Surgery. The academic support provided by the
university is a great help in carrying out his research projects, providing support
for the students under his supervision and in applying for funding. His current
project involves evaluating the effects of dorsal rhizotomy on bone development
and walking patterns.

WHAT IS A SHRINER

The definition of a Shriner is the following:

Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of
brotherly love, relief and truth with nearly 200 temples (chapters) in several countries and thou-
sands of clubs around the world. Our fraternity is open to men of integrity from all walks of life.

Shriners 22 hospitals provide advanced care and procedures for orthopaedic and neuromuscu-
loskeletal conditions and injuries, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate, and other
complex health care needs.

Now that we have the definition of a Shriner and the purpose of our fraternity is our hospitals, let us
look at the different types of Shriners that we have in our Shrine Centres.

The first type is the Mason who joins the Shrine for the sole principal of having a fez, paying his
yearly dues, and making personal donations to the Shriners Hospital. This Shriner is not interested in
Clubs or Units, parades or social events. This Shriner will get members to join by informing them
that part of their dues goes to the Shrine Hospital, which is a great cause and you do not need to do
anything else.

The second type of Shriner is the who joins for the camaraderie, the social events for him and his
family and the parades. This Shriner tells his friends what a great fun place the Shrine is and works
on getting new members.

The third type of Shriner is the one who enjoys working at the Shrine Hospital as a driver, is the first
to volunteer to pick up children at the airport and drive them to the hospital. This Shriner will also get
in new members by informing them how gratifying it is to transport children to the Shrine Hospital.

The question is “which is the better Shriner”?
The answer is they are all great Shriners in their own way.

Helping children in need is a hallmark of the Shriners fraternity.

ECHOES FROM THE PAST

When the hospital opened its doors in 1925, many patients stayed at the hospital for several months at a time. This was particularly difficult
during the Holidays. To bring them some holiday cheer, Shriners and volunteers would visit them and entertain the patients as well as offer gifts
and treats. This tradition continues to this day! Even though the vast majority of our patients stay only for a short while, some visit just prior to
the Holiday season. Ladies, Shriners and generous benefactors still come bearing gifts of toys, candy, and other items to many smiling faces.
This year, even though social distancing measures have been put in place, their generosity will still be present thanks to the help of Santa’s
elves!

ALUMINIUM PULL-TABS

I have completed the task of going though all the pull tabs
which I have received from you all to date. My total is
1,425,357 tabs weighing 399 Kg or 879 lbs. They are
housed in 55 x 5 gallon pails.
Yesterday, I checked the current price of mixed aluminum
on the net and it showed $ 0.50 per pound. I called my
scrap yard and they are offering $ 0.33 per pound. Now, I
am still awaiting a large quantity from Massey-Vanier and
possibly from an elementary school in Cornwall, On. Until
I receive these other quantities, I am going to hold on to
what I have as the price we get may still go up.
